Suggestions and Requests / State machine internal transitions
« on: March 13, 2012, 05:45:12 pm »
I recently upgraded to EA 9.3 and again was a bit disappointed that state machines still do not support modelling of internal transitions. Am I the only one out there that would need this functionality or what do others think here?

General Board / Links between project
« on: October 24, 2014, 06:56:57 pm »
Hello, is it possible to create a link from one element in a project to another project? Couldn't find anything in the help nor in the Project Management with UML and Enterprise Architect training documents.
Thanks, Martin

General Board / «decisionInput»
« on: July 04, 2014, 07:13:28 pm »
We are currently working with activity diagrams and looking for the decision input notational element that we found in the UML superstructure specification section 12.3.22 and also in literature. In EA I have only the note element, but I cannot find a way to the «decisionInput» keyword to a note. Is there any way around this?

Thanks

General Board / Attributes and Enumerations
« on: May 28, 2013, 12:49:46 am »
Hi,
in a class I have an attribute a, that in C source code I would like to show up as an uint8_t. I also have an enumeration E of specific values that this attribute can assume.
In my attribute definition I can now specify the type as either uint8_t, or E (the enumeration), but not both. I also would like to set the initial value of the attribute to one of the enumeration values, and limit the attribute values to just one of those enumeration values.
Also when I assign the type to my enumeration type a :E, I can nevertheless enter any value in the Initial Value field, and not, as I had hoped for, just one of the enumeration values. Any way to fix this?

Thanks,  Martin

General Board / Model Validation menu item
« on: May 23, 2013, 11:19:29 pm »
Hi, this has probably been asked before, but I cannot find anything in the forum. In EA9 there was a Project|Model Validation menu item which seems to have disappeared from the default menu system in EA10. The online help however still talks about this menu item. Any hint where I can find it back?
Thanks

General Board / Class operations and activities
« on: January 23, 2013, 11:23:31 pm »
I would have some general questions on modeling a class, it's operations, and it's behavior with a FSA.

I define a class and add a state machine to it. I would like to add an operation to the class that I specify in detail in an activity diagram. In 'Fifty Enterprise Architect Tricks' I found that one should create an activity diagram and then drag the class operation onto the diagram. This creates an action within my activity diagram, not an activity itself. In the UML 2.4.1 specification I read 'An action represents a single step within an activity, that is, one that is not further decomposed within the activity. An activity represents a behavior that is composed of individual elements that are actions.' So therefore I assumed that EA should have created an activity instead of an action, and within this activity I describe the operations behavior by further actions.

I also see that for operation parameters I can use custom data types (ISO C99 fixed length types from stdint.h) that I imported with Model Import Reference Data from an XML file, however it appears that I cannot use those types in activity diagrams.

Similar, when in my state diagram, I would like to add an activity (or a class operation) as entry, exit, or do action to a state, which I somehow cannot do. I can however select an activity or a class operation as behavior for a transition.

Are those limitations of Enterprise Architect (I'm using EA10) or do I misunderstand UML concepts here?

General Board / State machine internal transitions
« on: July 12, 2010, 11:24:59 pm »
Hi, I wonder if EA supports internal transitions in state machine diagrams. Contrary to self-transitions, I would like to model a transition that does not change state, but also does not execute entry or exit actions.

Is there any way to export diagrams from EA in SVG format?

General Board / Hyperlink across multiple lines
« on: August 25, 2009, 05:56:41 am »
Hi, is there any way to spread the Alias of a hyperlink across multiple lines? I like to reference specifications from within my model that unfortunately have a title to long for one portrait layout page (such as most international standards ;-)

General Board / Package with links to external documents
« on: August 10, 2009, 07:39:47 pm »
I would like to add a central package to a model that contains hyperlinks to external documents, for example PDF files, specifications, etc. but possibly also Word documents, to which I can link from any of my diagrams in my model.

I know that I can add hyperlinks to individual diagrams, though these don't show up in the Project Browser, and thus I can not link to them from other diagrams, leaving me with problems to maintain consistency of my document links.

Any idea on how to implement this?

General Board / SysML Requirements
« on: July 20, 2009, 07:00:32 pm »
Hi, has anybody tried to enhance the SysML Requirements elements with additional tagged values similar to the description in the Requirements Management with EA white paper?

Thanks

General Board / SysML Requirements
« on: June 30, 2009, 07:41:37 pm »
I am just starting to work with the SysML technology for EA and in particular the SysML requirements diagram.

One of the issues the I observed is that the notation used by EA appears to differ from what I find in the SysML 1.1 specification from November 2008. In particular I miss the text attribute in the EA requirement element. EA obviously uses notes instead of 'text'

Is there by chance a summary available that list an/or explains differences between the SysML specification and how it is implemented by EA?

Also, is there any possibility to override the tag definitions in the SysML requirements extension, such for example that I take out the risk and the source tags, and add others, such as 'verifiedBy'.

Additionally I missing the Requirements table described in the SysML spec, the elements list is similar, but not quite the same.

Thanks

Bugs and Issues / Generate RTF Report
« on: April 27, 2012, 08:54:47 pm »
Hi,
I recently upgraded from EA 9.2 to 9.3 and cannot find my usual generate documentation menus anymore. As far as I interpret the documentation, right click on a package in the Project Explorer should produce the following menu (as with EA 9.2)

Instead I get something like this with EA 9.3

Thanks for any hints.

Bugs and Issues / VSIntegrate installation problem
« on: June 06, 2011, 03:51:51 am »
Hello,
I have problems installing Visual Studio Integration on a Windows XP system, both with 4.0.4 and 4.5.7. Installations starts but terminates with a Message:

Error 1316: A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file....

In the installation dialog, the last message I get is "Registering product..."

Any idea what goes wrong here?

Thanks.

The installation file is however local on my disk and

Uml Process / Question concerning optional concurrent substates
« on: May 15, 2014, 09:06:05 pm »
I have a general question concerning modelling of concurrent sub-states in FSA diagrams. My basic class model would look like follows:

Class1 is mandatory, Class2 is an optional extension to Class1. The functionality implemented by Class2 requires the existence of Class1. To model this I use a composition to whole with multiplicity 0..1 at the Class2 end and 1 on the Class1 end. Each of the classes features its own FSA. The Class2 FSA however should become active as a concurrent sub-state of Class1 State2, and given that Class2 is optional, the concurrent sub-state should be optional as well. Also Class2 shall be destroyed when I reenter State1 in the FSA for Class1.

I don't know if this is formally correct and compliant with UML. I also have found no hint if it is in fact possible at all to mark a region as optional.
In the project browser my model looks like below:

When I want to add FSA2 to the concurrent region of State2 should I use add as Invocation, or add as Link. The latter moves FSA2 in the project browser from being subordinate to Class2 to State2 instead which is probably not the desired behavior.
