General Board / .rtf documentation
« on: April 28, 2016, 11:52:09 am »
I'm starting to think that putting documentation in .rtf documents in the repository is a good idea.

However, I have not yet figured out how best to use .rtf documents in Sparx. I searched for - but did not find - specific recommendations or help files.

Specific questions:

Once you've created a .rtf document - how do you find it again? How can you create a hyperlink to it that you can put into multiple diagrams?

If I create a .rtf document for an element - say an Archimate application component - can the icon for that element be made to graphically indicate the existence of an .rtf document? So that I can see that there's something there?

Where in the project browser are .rtf documents to be found?

Thanks :-)

Sparx Archimate 'Hide Connector' Defect Reproducibility Narrative:

01. Connect an Archimate data object to an Archimate application component using the 'accesses' relationship - relationship is shown on diagram. Be happy.
02. Nest the data object in the application component - relationship is drawn from edge of application object to the data object
03. Note that this looks a bit naff
04. Select accesses relationship. Select 'Visibility' > 'Hide Connector' to hide accesses relationship when data object is nested.
05. Confirm relationship still exists in the project browser - it does.
07. Drag the data object outside of the application component. Relationship connector should be displayed. It does not display. Note that "Composition" relationship does display when nesting other Archimate elements.
08. Wonder why.
09. Select data object.
10. Select "Insert Related Objects..." and click check boxes to get relationship to display on diagram when data object is _not_ nested
11. Confirm via investigation that the 'accesses' relationship does, in fact, continue to exist in the project browser, but refuses to display.
12.  Delete data object on diagram. Drag data object from project browser to diagram. 'Accesses' relationship appears.
13. Wonder why.
13a. Experiment to reveal that 'hide connector' appears to be permanent when invoked, and the only way to get ANY connector to appear again to ANY object - even when not 'nesting' - is to delete the object on a diagram and drag the object onto the diagram again from the project browser.
13b. Speculate that this may be unintended behaviour by Sparx developers.
14. Raise topic in Sparx Systems Forum.
15. Wait for illuminating comments - or sympathetic murmurs - from forum contributors.

Suggestions and Requests / Establish a new discussion group
« on: September 10, 2010, 07:08:47 am »

Establish a new, separate, dedicated discussion group for users of Sparx EA who are using Sparx EA for Enterprise Architecture. E.g., establishing an Enterprise Architecture repository and skill sets to create and manage artefacts relating to business, data, application, technology in the corporate context.

This is my area of interest for the tool. And I know there are hundreds of other professionals out there in the world using it for the same purpose.

I find it a bit odd that the dominant flow of messages on the Sparx board is about writing VBA scripts, reverse engineering, and technical questions related to software architecture / software engineering.

And yet the tool is named "Enteprise Architect" - not "Software Architect". There is a TOGAF plug-in for Sparx, but there is negligible discussion on the Sparx forum of how customers are using TOGAF, the TOGAF plug-in, or Sparx professionallly.

End of message. :)

Suggestions and Requests / Separate forum for MDG TOGAF Add-in
« on: October 21, 2009, 03:14:52 pm »
Hi Sparxians

I'm going to suggest that we create a new, separate discussion thread for users of the MDG Add-ins. I'm thinking specifically of the TOGAF and Zachman add-ins.

Currently, any discussion relating to how to use the TOGAF MDG Add-ins would fall in amongst fairly technical discussions in the "Automation Interface, Add-Ins and Tools" forum.

What I would be interested in is encouraging people who are using the TOGAF MDG add-in for business purposes (not developer technical folk) to be able to share knowledge.

I'm thinking the Zachman MDG Add-In would warrant a separate forum thread on it's own. Most questions I can think of for Zachman would be fairly orthogonal to questions relating to the TOGAF add-in.

What say you?

Suggestions and Requests / Rendering Text Inside Process Icon - Extended
« on: December 23, 2008, 11:26:25 pm »
A small request that shouldn't be too hard to get right:

When using the 'Process' icon from the tool box palette for Extended | Analysis, can the text label of the icon stay inside the outline of the icon?

Thanks :)

Suggestions and Requests / Implement Redo for Element | Size |
« on: November 11, 2008, 11:38:18 am »
Occasionally I'd like to be able to 'select all' objects say on a Component Diagram and make them shorter. Or wider.

Because the amount of shortening that is implemented by default seems to be very small (probably a pixel I'm guessing), it would be very useful to be able to use 'Ctrl + Y' to redo the command as many times as I need.

But when I look at the 'Redo' command, it is ghosted out. Dang.

Seems like a very easy thing to implement in the very next build.

He says.

Thanks ;D

Suggestions and Requests / "Reset to Default Standard Colours"
« on: September 30, 2008, 10:43:48 am »

This morning I was experimenting with Tools | Options | Standard Colours.

Turns out any changes are immediately persistent.

There is no "UNDO" or "RESET TO DEFAULT COLOURS" button.

Can this please be considered for next release?

Suggestions and Requests / Bi-Directional Interface Relationship Matrix CSV
« on: September 16, 2008, 10:59:50 pm »

The Relationship Matrix can be exported to CSV, but bi-directional interfaces (information flows connecting components) are not indicated in the exported CSV data, nor is the directionality of the connection. The CSV file contains only an 'X' to indicate that there is some kind of interface.

Please consider putting an 'X' if one direction (horizontal source to vertical target on the matrix)  and a 'Y' if the other direction (vertical source to horizontal target) and an 'XY' if the information flow is bi-directional.

This would make the CSV output more useful that the Relationship Matrix as I can format an Excel spreadsheet to print on an A3 form -- but can't get the Relationship Matrix to print directly to A3.

Suggestions and Requests / EA Lite with EA Corporate on same machine
« on: September 05, 2008, 03:45:29 pm »
It would be good if I could install BOTH on the same machine to demonstrate how the Lite version works to persons who need to view the models I have created in the full version.

Currently, if one installs EA Lite, one's corporate version is over-written.

Suggestions and Requests / Wider 'Recent' Box in Start Page
« on: July 23, 2008, 08:59:32 am »
Looks like the 'Recent' box in Start Page is hard-coded to display only 31 or 32 characters of file name for EA projects.

I tend to be fairly liberal in using long file names, with version and date at the end of the name.

So when I try to open a project from Start Page, all I see is multiple projects all with the same first 32 characters, with the information that would tell me which one I want to open at the end of the file name. Which I can't see.

Can this display field / box be widened to say 128 characters or so?

This problem seems also to exist with other 'open file' windows and dialogue boxes - I can't resize the 'Open Project' window - it's hard-coded to a defined window size.

General Board / Derived Relationships?
« on: January 09, 2014, 10:23:50 pm »
This topic does not appear to have been discussed before (I searched).

Does anyone know if Sparx has any future intent to implement "Derived Relationships" in any meaningful way?

E.g., select any object and Sparx will show you the complete end-to-end, upstream and downstream chain of related objects.

("Insert Related Elements" is not the same thing.)

I need to check the Biner EASI plug-in to see if and how it does DR, but I imagine it would only do it for ArchiMate concepts.

It doesn't actually sound like it would be too hard to implement, but what do I know?

Does anyone have a view as to how difficult this would be?

Has anyone written a script to do it?

One wonders.

General Board / Icon resolution
« on: September 04, 2011, 11:08:58 am »

The Sparx EA app icon looks grainy and ragged at higher screen resolutions - not the most important thing - but fixing this should be a 5 minute activity for some Sparx programmer. :)

General Board / Anyone using Archimate?
« on: November 19, 2010, 08:17:29 pm »
Is anyone out there using Sparx ArchiMate? (Other than you, Adrian...)

Comparing the ArchiMate meta model in the ArchiMate Specification document to the ArchiMate meta model in Sparx - the Sparx meta model is quite ... different.

Who created the Sparx ArchiMate profile / plug-in / meta model? Someone at Sparx - or a third party? Is it possible to ask questions of the creator regarding any further enhancement of the ArchiMate meta model / profile in Sparx?

The Relationships don't seem to enforce any of the rules in the ArchiMate Specification.

Dead? Buried? No interest?

General Board / Show linked objects on new diagram
« on: November 19, 2010, 03:33:31 pm »
I want to drag an element onto a new diagram and have all the other elements that are linked to the element appear automatically.

Can't remember how to do this. Have looked and can't find the menu item. It should be an obvious thing to find in the UI. I also searched the help file and it didn't pop up under "show linked objects / elements / dependencies"....
