General Board / Can the rake overlay on actions be disabled?

Can the rake overlay be disabled?   
Expect this can be done per diagram.

Background

I have activities and actions.
When I create an activity diagram, I do the following:
  • I add new actions to the diagram (no rake overlay), and/or
  • I add an action as an invocation of an existing activity.  In this case the rake overlay is added.

General Board / EA13 UI & Settings Diagram Frame Options

Running into some unexpected behavior.

I am using EA13 and I want to control the diagram frame options.
I had been able to do this, but today I cannot find where to change the settings.

I do not see an expected 'Diagram' section.


How do I control the Diagram Frame Options in EA13.1?

Bugs and Issues / DBMS based Project Transfer for 12.1

I am using EA 12.1.1230 with SQL DBMS as repo.

I want to transfer to another SQL DBMS instance.

The Team Modeling Resources for Enterprise Architect page at http://www.sparxsystems.com/resources/corporate/index.html only provides links for 13.0 schema:

I created database with scripts cited above.
When transferring form DBMS to DBMS, I get errors comparable to "Cannot find the object "t_category" because it does not exist or you do not have permissions."

When I run the 'Project Compare...' option, unexpected differences are cited.

Are there 12.1 EASchema scripts I should be using instead of those based on 13.0?   If so, where/how do I get them?

Anyone have practices to share to model product variants?   

For example, say you have 2 software components that are built with different localization settings and for different Operating Systems, this can be seen as two components:

  • componentA, and
  • componentB

Variation Point 1 is localization with variations:
  • English, and
  • Japanese

Variation Point 2 is operating system with variants:
  • Windows 10, and
  • OSX 10


For each component, there are four variants.  Example:
Component A, English, Windows 10
Component A, English, OSX 10
Component A, Japanese, Windows 10
Component A, Japanese, OSX 10

I expect the modeling concerns are common:
How do I model the variation points?
How do I parameterize (not sure if this is the appropriate term) the component configurations?
How do I view the resultant variant types.

I am looking for a way I can measure the performance of my DBMS repository accessed from different geographical locations.

In general, the performance/usability of the UI goes down the further the EA app is from the DB Server.  I am looking for a way to measure the performance so we can baseline different configurations.

Anyone have any tips or something to share to baseline performance for this context?

Suggestions and Requests / Add support for Paste as unformatted text

i would like to optionally be able to paste unformatted text in an elements notes field.

Today only paste is supported and I typically open a text editor, copy from email/web browser/doc/IM , paste in text editor, copy, then paste in EA.  This avoids the inconsistent results in pasting any rich text you may have originally copied.

Being able to copy from anywhere then paste as unformatted text would greatly improve my workflow.

Ive been using 12.0 thus far and am not aware of any such feature existing today. 

Updated to request this as an optional feature.

General Board / Avoiding stereotype clashes of MDG technologies

What are the practices to avoid stereotype clashes of MDG technologies?

I am observing a problem I haven't resolved yet which I believe is due to a stereotype clash.

Steps leading to the issue:
  • Create MDG Technology called 'My Requirements'
  • 'My Requirements' defines a 'Functional Requirement' stereotype derived from the requirement metaclass
  • Import 'My Requirements' MDG technology into model
  • Import 'SYSMOD' MDG technology into model (Reference)
  • Create a Business Requirement element called REQ1 (Note: Element could be of any type other than "My Requirements::Functional Requirement"
  • Change type & stereotype of REQ1 to "My Requirements::Functional Requirement"

This is where I run into problems.
Expected Result: I am able to change type and stereotype to "My Requirements::Functional Requirement"
Actual Result: The type and stereotype changes to "SYSMOD::Functional Requirement"

Perhaps I am doing something wrong; on either the MDG development side, or EA usage side.

Any pointers?

Hoping these is a better way when using a DBMS.

Hello,  I am hitting a performance/usabiltiy issue when I try to add and use an activity as an action (invocation) on an Activity Diagram.  In some scenarios EA closes unexpectedly.  In some cases EA just becomes unusable and I have to close it.

Is this a known issue? 


Version details:
Program Version: 12.0.1215 (Build:1215)

Registered Enterprise Architect (Corporate Edition)

Can someone share the recommend practice for deploying a MDG when the model is accessed via DBMS.

From the user guide, there are two methods:
  • Import MDG Technologies to Model
  • Access Remote Technologies

We have users who access the model two ways:
Method 1: Run from EA installed on local system
Method 2: Run remote desktop with EA UI launched on local system.

So I ruled out 'Import MDG Technologies to Model' as that involves a local path....and I did not want to change the EA installation used via remote desktop.

This leaves 'Access Remote Technologies'.  My observation is every user will have to apply the steps.  I just wanted to verify this was the common practice.

Updated: corrected terminology by changing MTS to MDG.

I am creating a User Template/Fragment to include a table of Tag Names & Values.

Problem is, selecting the section for 'Package/Element/Tagged Value' results in some boilerplate/instructional text that I cannot delete.



Any way to workaround this?

I am on EA 12.0.1215, Corporate Edition

General Board / DBMS Backups to File

Can someone verify the Project/Project Transfer process does not impact the 'source'?  

Use Case: Save DBMS backup to EAP file
Goal: The model owner wants to save a snapshot of the project saved as DBMS on periodic bases to have a redundant backup.

I was just going to use the 'Transfer Type' of 'DBMS to File', but wanted to make sure this process will keep the DBMS as-is.

General Board / clarify intended practice for relating elements

what is the intended practice for modeling different perspectives of the same entity?  

For example, what I have done is define a UML class element and specify associations and attributes.   Then if I want to show its connections to other elements, create an UML Component diagram.   Again, add provides/requires interface and other connections.

I would think there should be a way to associate the two elements if they are modeling the same entity.   The rationale is to have consistent names, reconcile and leverage each elements associations and attributes.    I haven't come across a way to do this.  

Anyone have pointers here?

General Board / Recommendations for file with many packages?

I am on the verge of starting a new project and plan to use version control to enable multi-user collaboration of the eap file.

My question relates to what is the recommended package layout?  Is there a single best-practice or is this comperable to 'branch policies' where there are many valid practices, each having pluses and minus?

For example:

Given two complex software components to model, should packages be split by models or components?

Model approach:

+ Requirements Model
   - Component A
   - Component B
+ Use Case Model Model
   - Component A
   - Component B

Component approach:

+ Component A
   - Requirements Model
   - Use Case Model
+ Component B
   - Requirements Model
   - Use Case Model

In general the approach I plan on taking is to start simple and add the complexity and component scoping when necessary.

Any recommendations or pitfalls to watch out for?

Uml Process / Unexpected diff:Activity Diagram vs. Dynamic View

I noticed some unexpected differences in what was allowed when editing an Activity Diagram and the default diagram created from the Dynamic View.


For example:
  • Create Dynamic View via Model Pattern
  • Create decision element
  • Using the arrow thingie (can't remember what EA calls it), create an action from the decision element via control flow

Expected Results:  select Action/Control Flow, new Action created and linked to decision.
Actual Results:  Menu does not provide an Action option

This seems like a bug.   Am I doing something wrong here?
