General Board / Re: Using Both EA and NDoc documentation in .NET
« on: December 15, 2003, 12:10:53 pm »
Thanks Matthias,

In my tests I discovered that I could use (xmlified) img tags.  Your extra tips are most useful.

I did decide to use EA in my projects.

I'm currently using three forms of documentation.  In time I would like to merge these into one.

1)  Pure NDoc documentation.

2)  My own documentation which is produced as compiled help (CHM) files.  This is dead easy to do.  (I use Homesite to create content and the HTML Help Workshop to turn that into a CHM.)

3)  HTML format EA documentation.

This will head toward deeper integration but works as is.  Integration is likely to follow a track like:

A)  Check the ability to import other CHM's into a new build within Help Workshop.  That gives me a way to integrate the automatically created content into the manually controlled CHM.

B)  Build a CHM from EA HTML content.  The structure is a very regular with subdirectories etc.  I envisage a mixed automatic / manual approach initially.  In this a tool creates the basic HTML Help files by recursing the subdirectories and building the file list and navigation structure.  I haven't yet investigated putting names into the "site map" file.  I'd like to automate but expect to do it manually at first.

C)  Merge all three into one CHM.

The material won't initially be interlinked, but that may come later...

This is a fill in project and has no time line.

General Board / Using Both EA and NDoc documentation in .NET

I'm closing out an evaluation of EA.

Currently I'm considering using both EA and NDoc (like the MS documentation in CHM format).

It seems logical to interlink the two systems.

Does anyone have ideas and practical experience to share?

General Board / Re: Stereotypes for ASP.NET

Thanks Carl.

Yes I've had a look at that material and EA has stereotypes built in that cover this ground.

As you say Conallen covers this in his article and his book.  I've had a quick look at the book but didn't find coverage of the things specific to the ASP.NET model.

At this time I still have a slight hope that I'll find something.

General Board / Stereotypes for ASP.NET

Are stereotypes for ASP.NET classes like

Code Behind class
Actual front end client page
User Control
Server Control

If so where can I find them.

General Board / Code to Convert EA HTML to CHM format
« on: November 24, 2003, 05:42:32 pm »
EA currently produces HTML output.  I'm guessing this is fairly easy to convert to a form suitable for producing compiled help (CHM) files.

(NDoc for example does this.)

Has anyone written some (freely available) code that traverses the directories and produces the hhc, hhk and hhp files needed to generate the help?

If so where can I get it?

General Board / Importing SQL Server Stored Procedures to EA

I'm interested in importing / reverse engineering T-SQL stored procedures.

What is the best way to automate?

General Board / Evaluation Editing Source Code
« on: October 20, 2003, 06:58:21 pm »

I'm evaluating EA 3.60.647 (Professional).

I was looking at source code editing and don't have a complete view of what happens.  Observations include:

1)  Alt 7 brings in an editor when a class has focus.

2)  F12 brings up no editor when a class has focus.

3)  Class/Properties/File brings up an editor (VS) after a file is selected and I hit launch.

4)  I initially selected VS for editing VB.NET code then changed it to another editor.  I have not seen that other editor invoked.

Can anyone explain to me the ins and outs of editing source from EA.  (In this case I'm looking at VS.NET and C# is also of interest,  SQL Server editing (sprocs) would be good too!)

Has anyone got a timeline on the VS integration I saw mentioned?

Uml Process / Using UML to represent a "data flow"
« on: December 02, 2003, 02:08:47 pm »
I have an existing suite of applications that I am currently documenting using EA.  Some documentation is aimed at speeding ongoing development work.

UML is clearly a good way to do this.  I'd like the documentation to follow the intention of the UML design.  I'd appreciate pointers to work that covers situations close to mine.

1)  Data flows through the programs getting transformed as it goes.
2)  The data is in various formats as it moves (flat file, RDBMS, XML within RDBMS, XML and XHTML probably covers it)
3)  The data is transformed by Code Objects (.NET assemblies), stored procedures (SQL Server) and XSLT Transforms.
4)  The data can be thought of as being in fairly coherent chunks.
5)  Other "data flows" change for example the way the code works over time.

I want a diagram that quickly lets me see what touches the data flow.

Do you know of a similar situation?

Automation Interface, Add-Ins and Tools / Experience with MDG link
« on: July 08, 2004, 09:47:16 pm »
I'm excited by the idea of MDG link.

Before I jump in I'd like some feedback on what others have found.

What is the experience of the early users of this product?
