General Board / Re: How to add more than one model in same reposit

Thanks thomaskilian. It lead me to the next question though. How can you configure a version control with Database repository? Is it do able? Or do I have to rely on EAP file, stored some where on NFS using the veriosn control file based DBMS to lock the EAP file.

Yes this is possible - we're doing this with a MySQL based repository and version controlled packages linked to Subversion.

You just have to be aware that when anyone checks-out/checks-in the work is visible to the whole team that has access to the DB repository (i.e. when you check out a package all changes you make will be visible to the whole team, even though it's your check-out) - but that isn't necessarily a bad thing - it just depends on how you prefer to work with the model).

As Maarten advised, I'd take a look at the whitepaper which is quite comprehensive.  Also the EA help has a discussion of options for team working which touches on this I think.

General Board / Re: New RTF Document Generator for Virtual Documen
« on: September 21, 2005, 02:07:47 am »
Thanks Thomas - you are right, it does seem to be triggered by generating the entire diagram and not the element.

The Element generation is still available, but you have to first select the document element in the diagam before it will ungrey the option - but this of course brings up the legacy RTF generator, so it's not completely consistent.

Cheers,
Martin.

General Board / New RTF Document Generator for Virtual Documents?
« on: September 20, 2005, 10:12:58 am »
The build 770 release notes include the following line:

Quote
Added support for Model Document and Single-element document generation using the revised RTF Generator.

I interpret this to mean that the new RTF generator can now be used when generating Model Document/Virtual Document elements.

However, I can't for the life of me find out how to do it.  Whenever I try to generate a virtual document element it just gives me the legacy RTF generator dialog.  There's no button to switch to the new generator, and there seems to be no option to set either.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Martin.

Try putting a UI control into your diagram and then right-clicking on it and selecting Appearance-->Select Alternate Image.

This allows you to select an image that you've pre-loaded into the model (using the Add New button on the same dialog).

Alternatively, you could just enable the "fit to page" option in the diagram properties, and then your diagram can be any size - probably easier than resizing all the fonts.

Regarding virtual documents, they're on the way...  :)

Many thanks KP - that was the news I was hoping to hear.  Good work on the new 5.0 version BTW - glad to see that EA is keeping the momentum up with new features.

Martin

I agree - the ability to be able to define RTF templates in the new style (on a per package basis) and then drag each of those packages into a Virtual Document and have the new templates applied would be very powerful.

I'm kind of surprised that Sparx didn't add support for this in the new version - the mix of new style RTF templates and old (RTF template) style virtual documents seems abit of a cludge.

Presumably the plan is not to support the legacy report generation forever, in which case does this mean that Sparx will add this feature, or will we lose Virtual Document support completely?

Thanks,
Martin.

He he  :D  Not exactly - been on the forum for two and a half years.  I just don't post much...

If you're using the new RTF template editor in v5.0, I believe all you need to do is select the Attribute section in the sections tree on the left hand side of the template editor, and then use the up/down buttons above to move the section up/down.

EA then modifies the report structure shown on the right hand side automatically (there's no need to cut and paste).

General Board / Re: generate interfaces documentation
« on: December 23, 2004, 07:02:55 am »
Actually I think Yann has a fair point.  I'm putting together a component model which has ports.  The ports in turn expose required and provided interfaces.  If I generate documentation for this model (either RTF or HTML - doesn't matter) I see the list of ports associated with each component in a table, but there's nothing at all about the required/provided interfaces associated with each port.

This is an important part of the model, and shouldn't really be missing IMO.  I'll therefore need to think of other ways of getting this documentation out (probably via the automation interface).

Not sure whether this is a bug or just a "missing feature"  ;)

You can use Ctrl-Delete in the browser to delete the currently selected item (but the warning still appears).

Therefore, if you want to delete items quickly, combinations of Ctr-Del followed by Enter do the job pretty well.  Not sure if multi-select delete is supported (haven't tried that since 4.5 came out).

General Board / Re: Partitions or Swimlanes ???
« on: November 29, 2004, 09:10:12 am »
CJ,

I'm not sure about the semantics, but partitions in EA do at least "grab" anything within their boundary (much like a boundary does)....therefore making it easier to re-organise your diagram if moving things around (unlike swimlanes, which are not connected to diagram elements at all).

Interesting article on one author's (non-RUP) UML process:
http://www.objectsbydesign.com/books/applying_uml.html

Larman's book is excellent - but it's more than just process - it gives you a real insight into the drivers behind OO design, use of patterns etc., especially if you didn't cut your teeth on OO (like me).   I very much recommend it...

General Board / Re: Alternatives to RUP
« on: November 20, 2004, 11:08:55 am »
I think what Thomas means is that EA will support any methodology that uses UML2.0 as its notation.  Clearly it will not support methodologies that use different notations such as DFDs.

One methodology that EA is well suited to is the ICONIX process, due to its support for robustness diagrams - but there is no underlying methodology intended with EA - it just supports UML, which is a notation, not a methodology.

The same applies to most other UML tools.  For example, if you buy Rational Rose you will get a tool that supports the UML notation and nothing else.  You do not get RUP - it has to be bought separately, and in any case you can use RUP with any UML tool -  it doesn't have to be Rose...

I assume you're using the "Configure Zicom Mentor" option off the help menu to enter your key, and not the "Register and Manage License Keys" option?
