General Board / Re: A critic/proposal: philosophy of EA

You ask a complex question.  I am not familiar with the paper you mention, but if it answers your questions well then 100 pages of reading is time well spent.

I am currently not using this feature, only because I need more layout flexibility than it currently offers.  Consider this a vote for the ability to move the realized interfaces to other edges.

General Board / Using the whole screen
« on: September 02, 2003, 10:48:41 am »
Prier to bersion 3.6 I could turn the whole right panel on and off by pressing F2.  I used this feature a lot when dealing with large diagrams with many elements in them.

Now in 3.6 nothing obvious happens when I hit F2.  Can somebody tell me what the equivalent keyboard command is now, and/or point me to a keyboard command reference?

Or, say I have one base class and 10 subclasses. I want one arrow to the base class, short vertical line, and a long horizontal line. I then want each subclass to simply connect to the long horizontal line. Just a simple tree.

Draw your inherit associations as usual, then right click each one and select "Tree style".

General Board / Re: Control packages, absolute path problem
« on: April 03, 2003, 05:42:05 am »
While Sparx is usually very responsive to usability issues, in this case they have not been.  As far as I know there is really no way around this problem.  Every time I import a controlled package from a co-worker with a different directory structure I must first reset the path to the file.

It sure would be nice to see this get fixed.

General Board / Re: Zicom Mentor - Anybody buy it?

Not sure why, but my last message is displaying to me as black on black.  In case it is doing so for all, here is what I wrote after the quote:

If anybody goes ahead and purchases this I would be interested in seeing a review.  As the evaluation version seems to be content free, it is hard for me to tell if it would provide a useful reference or a useless (to me) high level overview.

Zicom Mentor is the ideal companion to EA for those wanting the UML specification at the fingertips while actively engaged in modeling work.

See: http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/zm/zm.htm

General Board / Re: EAP file open error
« on: January 21, 2003, 11:36:55 am »
I believe you will get this error if the file is read only, which sometimes happens if you have received it as an email attachment (I'm not sure why).

If this is your problem, look at the file properties, uncheck "Read only", and it will be usable.

General Board / Re: Note editor
« on: January 16, 2003, 07:04:07 am »
I'll add one more thing to the wish list:

The property browser's "Notes" pane shows notes for any selectedobject, but simply goes blank for connectors, even when there are notes for that connector.  It only seems natural that it would also show notes for a selected connector, and it would certainly be more convenien than what we have to do now.

5. RTF generation: if a relative location is given in the RTF document generation, it is relative to the "current" directory, while I would like to have it relative to the projectfile. If I e.g. first open Enterprise Architect and then open a project somewhere, the relative location is based on the EA executable path.

I agree strongly.  Relative paths are not really any more useful than absolute paths if they are relative to something that generally constant (EA installation directory.)  This applies also to XML file paths for controlled packages as well.

It would be nice to have the user interface be a view with tabs, with each tab showing an open diagram.

I will certainly second that request!  The "One document at a time" approach of EA does make it a bit of a bother to refer to one document while working on another.

General Board / All requirements in EA - doable? Advisable?
« on: November 27, 2002, 06:53:40 am »
A few weeks ago I introduced my current client to EA, and we have been using it both for domain modelling and for documenting use cases.

It is our hope at this time that we will be able to use EA as the sole respository of requirements.  I would like to hear from other EA users who have tried this (successfully or not) or who chose not to try this.

What did you try?  What worked?  What challenges did you face?

Under what circumstances would you or would you not advise somebody to try this?

General Board / Re: Default Initial Position of New Objects

Instead of simply clicking on the object on the toolbar, drag it to where you want it to be.

(Personally I would eliminate the click functionality in favour of drag and drop - less confusing.)

General Board / Custom routed vs. direct
« on: November 27, 2002, 03:49:57 pm »
I have been using EA with default line style set to direct, changing individual lines to custom routed as required.  It seems though that a custom routed line with no line points added is effectively a direct routed line anyhow.

Is there any reason not to simply make all lines custom routed rather than direct?  Is there any reason for the product to have direct as a line style?

The constraint label is shared by the stereotype - so just turning off the particular label using Set Label Visibility may cause unwanted side effects. I will consider adding a per diagram and/or per link option for hiding information.

I think that for my own use, per diagram would be most used.  On some diagrams I might want to show constraints, on others certainly not.

In the meantime, thanks for the global setting.
