General Board / Using the whole screen
« on: September 02, 2003, 10:48:41 am »
Prier to bersion 3.6 I could turn the whole right panel on and off by pressing F2.  I used this feature a lot when dealing with large diagrams with many elements in them.

Now in 3.6 nothing obvious happens when I hit F2.  Can somebody tell me what the equivalent keyboard command is now, and/or point me to a keyboard command reference?

General Board / Zicom Mentor - Anybody buy it?

Zicom Mentor is the ideal companion to EA for those wanting the UML specification at the fingertips while actively engaged in modeling work.

See: http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/zm/zm.htm

If anybody goes ahead and purchases this I would be interested in seeing a review.  As the evaluation version seems to be content free, it is hard for me to tell if it would provide a useful reference or a useless (to me) high level overview.

General Board / All requirements in EA - doable? Advisable?
« on: November 27, 2002, 06:53:40 am »
A few weeks ago I introduced my current client to EA, and we have been using it both for domain modelling and for documenting use cases.

It is our hope at this time that we will be able to use EA as the sole respository of requirements.  I would like to hear from other EA users who have tried this (successfully or not) or who chose not to try this.

What did you try?  What worked?  What challenges did you face?

Under what circumstances would you or would you not advise somebody to try this?

General Board / Custom routed vs. direct
« on: November 27, 2002, 03:49:57 pm »
I have been using EA with default line style set to direct, changing individual lines to custom routed as required.  It seems though that a custom routed line with no line points added is effectively a direct routed line anyhow.

Is there any reason not to simply make all lines custom routed rather than direct?  Is there any reason for the product to have direct as a line style?

General Board / Disabling display of association constraints
« on: November 21, 2002, 11:43:13 am »
It seems that in build 581 (and perhaps previous builds) label the names o0f constraints on associations are displayed even when the diagram properties are set not to show constraints.  If you have a few of those, the diagram becomes unreadable pretty quickly.

If I turn off labels, then the constraints disappear but so does the name of the association.  Also not good.

How can I display the name of the association but not the names of constraints on the associations?

(If this cannot be done, I'll have to stop putting constraints on associations and document them in one of the classes instead.  That's a second best kind of a solution.)

General Board / Working with association classes
« on: November 14, 2002, 05:29:16 am »
Yesterday I had to make a conceptually simple change to a class diagram.  It turned out to be quite a lot of work because of how EA manages association classes.

I had a class A that was an association class between B and C.  I needed to make it an association between B and D instead.

The only way that I could see to do this was to delete and recreate it.  Of course I then had to recreate all links to it and visit each diagram it occurred in  to reset visibility of links not important top that diagram.

Worse yet, I have objects based on class A in various diagrams, and they all lost their association to the class.  I then had to edit each of those diagrams, delete each of those objects, recreate them, and recreate all the appropriate links.

Is there any part of that process that would have been easier had I only known about some helpfull feature already in the product?

Here is thje wish list that I have coming out of yesterday's work:

  • The ability to link an existing class to an association, making it an association class.
  • The ability to break a link between an association class and the association, making it a regular class
  • The ability to set or change the base class of an object

General Board / Multiplicity of association classes

If A is an association class between B and C, how does one specify the number of A's that there may b e for each combination of B and C ?

General Board / CVS support
« on: October 29, 2002, 10:56:00 am »
I note the following in the 3.50 manual:
Quote
Version control is not natively supported in EA. Future versions are planned to include Microsoft SCC support
for linking to commercial version control systems.

Most development environments I have worked in over the past few years have used CVS for version control.  Any chance that we could see CVS support in EA?

General Board / Locking Packages
« on: October 29, 2002, 03:27:44 pm »
I just upgraded to the Corporate edition of EA hoping that it would allow me to lock packages to users.  My intention was to give specific users responsibility for and ultimate control over their own subsystems in the model.

Now I can see how to lock individual classes and diagrams, but not how to lock all diagrams and classes within a package without doing them one at a time.

Am I mistaken in thinking that this can be done?

General Board / Spell Check greyed out in 3.5
« on: October 29, 2002, 01:47:42 pm »
I just installed EA 3.5 and I notice that Edit->Spell check is greyed out.  Is there a legitimate reason for that to happen?

General Board / Is Composed Of
« on: October 23, 2002, 10:12:16 am »
I am using EA 3.1 build 504,a nd I am new to EA so perhaps I am misunderstanding something.

When I create a simple association (solid lign, nop arrowheads) from class A to class B, the property browser tells me that A "Is composed of" B, which is not the case.  I cannot seem to create an association which is not represented by the property browser as either inheritence or aggregation.

Is this a bug or am I just misunderstanding the intention?
