Uml Process / Re: Is EA a good choice for Model Driven Architect
« on: March 02, 2004, 01:24:24 am »
Hi

EA has a decent automation interface as well as code generation.  We are developing our own in-house MDA and using EA for the modelling - using class and process diagrams with a little enhancement here and there :)  The automation interface lets us get at what the model says the application should do.  This is then interpreted by a custom framework to generate the apps.  Not sure whether this is OMG MDA, but as far as I can see, our application models correspond pretty well to the PIM in their spec.

Cheers

The book UML Distilled by Martin Fowler may help.  There are some decent UML tutorials on the EA website, another interesting site is www.parlezuml.com.

Uml Process / Re: Requirement Types and Stereotypes-which is whi

Hi Larry

It appears that stereotypes are not directly applicable to requirements.  EA allows you to define the type of the requirement and translates the stereotype entered in the 'new element' dialog into a requirement type.

You can maintain the requirement types from Configuration | General Types | Requirements.  But note that these are not treated as UML stereotypes and do not appear in the stereotypes list.

As far as I know, requirement is not part of the UML, it is a feature provided by EA.  A very userful one too :)

Hi Larry

Have posted a response to your other post.  (BTW, I don't work for Sparx.)

PS: Ignore the end statement in brackets in my last post....a cut and paste error!

Hi Larry

You can import/export packages (any package) by right clicking the project view, selecting import/export and then the csv option.  You will need to define the csv fields you have/want in the file, which can be done by clicking the button after 'specification' in the csv dialog.  Note that package contents are overwritten when importing.

To get at the stereotypes you have in an EA project, open the project file (.eap) in Access (it is an Access database) and open the t_stereotypes table.  (Or similar if you are using the corporate edition of EA and another DB as the storage.)

Cheers

(assuming you are not using the corporate edition with a different format )

There is a feature comparison of Rose to EA available on the EA main page.  It is written by an independent UK based consultancy (who are also a Delphi consulting house too).

I agree very wuch with the point about Sparx support - they are excellent in this respect, and I think they will make sure this continues :)
