Bugs and Issues / Re: EA forgets its configuration on floating license
« on: April 21, 2016, 09:29:54 pm »
I am the admin 8) and you are right.
The same behavior can be observed, when no network connection to the keystore server is present when starting EA.

So we have "license dementia" when:
  • license server is accessible, but no license is available as all licenses are checked-out
  • license server is not accessible when starting EA

Bugs and Issues / EA forgets its configuration on floating license
« on: April 14, 2016, 04:51:38 pm »

we are using the Sparx Keystore service for providing our floating licenses to the EA users.
From time to time all licenses are in use.
A user that starts EA, when all licenses are in use, gets an error message (as expected):
No available key for Enterprise Architect could be found.
Enter a key or connect to new keystore now?
[Yes]  [No]
After clicking on "No", because I know that no license is available, EA forgets that it had a "corporate floating" license configured previously.
When I "restart" EA afterwards the "License Management" dialog window appears where I can add or remove license keys.
In that dialog no license key is mentioned.

Can anybody confirm this behavior?
Why does EA forget about which license it has been configured?
Any idea how to prevent that EA forgets which license has been configured?

If anybody can confirm this I will report this as bug, as this is really annoying.
Many thanks.

According to comparison of the EA editions ( you need at least the Corporate Edition as client.
The "cloud service" itself (that "thing" that can be installed as Windows service) does not need any additional license as long as you are registered user at Sparx. Only then download is possible.

We have a service based key store.

Pretty strange. Here it is working, which is unfortunately not helpful for you.

Sure you are working on the correct key store?
Stupid question, I know, but just to be sure. Maybe you have several key stores (1 productive and 1 local keystore service for testing purposes).

Hello Mr. Sanders,

already checked out licenses keep their lease time.
Only licenses that are checked out after your change to a longer lease time get the longer lease time.

You can easily check this by extending the lease time from e.g. 1 to 5 days using the Keystore Manager and starting a new EA session afterwards.
The license you checked out seconds ago should appear with a date/time 5 days in the future in the "Lease Expires" column.

General Board / Re: Cloud Services: Storage location configuration
« on: December 16, 2015, 08:21:50 pm »
I found it.
It is in [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Sparx Systems\SQLBridge\DBManagers] and in other places in the registry.
Still not sure which is the correct place, but I am on the right way.

Unfortunately the "connection string" seems to be hashed.
My idea was to directly "generate" all database managers instead of creating them manually one by one (approx. 60 models).
I think I can forget my idea now.

where does Sparx Cloud Services store the configuration of the "Database Mangers", i.e. the list of the models that are exposed via the service and which models are read-only, etc.

I cannot find a file (with a recent date and time after a change of the configuration) and I cannot find anything in the registry.

General Board / Re: how to link to diagram in model documents
« on: December 04, 2015, 01:18:18 am »
You can create a "shortcut" file (*.eap) that "points" to your diagram:
  • Navigate to your desired diagram
  • Menu File -> Save as Shortcut...
  • Select a target file (will be overwritten or newly created)
  • Select "action when model is opened": Open the diagram '<yourDiagramName>'
  • Click OK
The eap file that is stored now is not the EA model itself, but contains only a connection string to the model and the diagram.
The eap file is in ASCII format and readable in every editor.
Its content looks like this:
Code: [Select]
EAConnectString:ea_model_27 --- DBType=4;Connect=Provider=MSDASQL.1;Persist Security Info=False;Data Source=ea_model_27;LazyLoad=1;

General Board / Re: Guarding a namespace?
« on: November 26, 2015, 06:13:55 pm »
Are you referring to the "names" of elements in the Project Explorer?
Since my first contact with EA (version 7.5) EA never cared about identical names.
EA identifies "elements" by their GUID (or UUID if you like) which serves as primary key wherever possible in the database tables.

So for EA it is allowed to have multiple elements (packages, classes, etc.), even on the same hierarchy level in the Package Browser, with identical name as long as the GUIDs are unique.

Maybe you could write a script checking for uniqueness of namespace names.

General Board / Re: How to use WAN Optimizer?
« on: November 23, 2015, 08:28:15 pm »
Thanks to all for pushing me into the right direction :).
The service is running and seems to be properly configured. Our Indian colleagues start testing via "cloud connection" within the next few days.

Currently I have one additional question:
Is a "project transfer" into an EAP file still possible if I am connected via the cloud service and without having local ODBC connections configures to the model?
In the project transfer dialog window I see no option to use a "cloud connection" as source.

As we are transferring the model content into an EAP file on every software release, as "baseline" that will be checked-in into our version control system, a transfer into an EAP file is somewhat important to us.

OK, thanks. I will give "Cloud Services" a try.

Did anyone notice that the "Cloud Services.rtf" provided with the installation package seems a little bit broken?
Its size is about 15 MB but Word 2007 and 2010 only display the first 4 pages.
How about providing a PDF? Shall I report this as bug?

General Board / How to use WAN Optimizer?
« on: November 17, 2015, 07:00:20 pm »
some facts and background information:
  • Our company has two sites (Europe and India)
  • The central repository server for our EA models is located in Europe
  • The site in India is connected to our Europe LAN via VPN
  • Working in EA is awful slow for the guys in India :(
Our idea is to use the "WAN Optimizer" to speed up things for them.

For testing purposes I (sitting in Europe) installed the WAN Optimizer services on my laptop. I am not expexting speed improvements, I only want to be able to connect to our EA models using the WNA Optimizer as proxy instead of connecting to our SQL server directly.
  • The service is running on port 4242 (default)
  • In the WAN Optimizer Admin application I added a "Database Manager" using an already existing "connection string" provided by using an existing ODBC data source
How do I know the connection from EA to the model on the server goas "through" the WAN Optimizer?
What other changes do I have to do (e.g. change ODBC data source configuration)?

The user guide for WAN Optimizer does not mention anything. It only describes how to install, to configure and to troubleshoot.
I does not mention how to "use" it after installation and configuration.

General Board / EA and PostgreSQL x64
« on: November 03, 2015, 06:08:22 pm »
I am currently "evaluating" if we can use EA (currently 12.0) with PostgreSQL 9.4 x64 as central repository server.

We are currently using EA with PostgreSQL 9.3 32 bit which work pretty fine.
On the clients we use psqlodbc 09.03 32 bit as ODBC driver.
EA clients run on Win 7 64 bit and PostgreSQL server runs on Windows 2012 R2.

When trying to connect to PostgreSQL 9.4 64 bit I face several issues:
  • Using psqlodbc 09.03 32 bit: EA 12 tries to open the database (all tables exist, but model is still empty):
    • EA tells the model is empty and ask to transfer a model into the database
    • When clicking "Yes" the next window that appears tells "EA has experienced a network error and will close down." :(
  • Using psqlodbc 09.03 64 bit:
    • EA does not even provide the database connection I configured for the test database :(
Does anybody have experience with EA and 64 bit PostgreSQL servers?
I would even appreciate an answer like "Hey dude, forget EA and PostgreSQL x64. This does not work. Use x86 and be happy."

General Board / Multi value/selection tagged value
« on: March 14, 2013, 09:03:09 pm »

is it possible to create a tagged value that has has not only one value but allows selection of more than one value?

Background: In my software I have a central state machine (states: Init, Normal, Error). This state machine calls, or does not call, C-functions depending on the system state.
In my EA model I have functions (designed as ports of classes, implemented as C functions) that have to be called by the state machine. Due to other reasons I have to write the information in which state a function has to be called at the function and not at the state machine. One function has to be called in Init and Normal, the other function in all three states for example.

My idea was to use a tagged value based on an enum type that offers all possibles states. But instead of selecting only one of all possible states I would like to select more than one, or all states, or even none of them, ...

Maybe this idea is complete crap, therefore alternative ideas are welcome (note elements with list of states are not an option).

Many thanks.
