Suggestions and Requests / Re: Apostrophe typos on website

Actually, that was a direct quote from one of my former clients. Having lived in both Canada and Mexico, I am quite aware that North America is more than just the US :-)

Funny how far away from UML does the conversation get sometimes...

Yes, but I imagine that some of George W's nuances must get lost in the translation to English ...

PS. I imagine you mean US American - there's a lot of North and South America that aren't USA.

Amazing how many people in England can speak pretty good American, isn't it? :-)

I don't object to American English per se - just as long as it doesn't call itself English or International English - they should consult some of the other colonies. ;)

And I thought only Germans are paranoid with their language...

Ever tried working in France? :-)

Hi,

try attaching a note to the element, then right-clicking on the link between the note and the element. There is an option "Link this note to an Element feature...".

Hope this helps!

I thought it was you... on this forum, simple rule of thumb is "if you do not know who answered it, assume it was Thomas" :-)

That was me and I'm surely above 1$ ;D

I would have made $1 at least :-)

Someone here on the forum suggested making the alphabetical sorting switched off by default... sounds like it would have made sense!

I wonder if we can get Sparx to give us 10c for everytime we answer that question  ;D

Hi,

try menu Tools > Options > Objects > Soft Features Alphabetically.

Hope this helps!

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Version Control for Code Templates
« on: January 20, 2006, 04:12:10 am »
You can do that manually (exporting the template to an XML file and version controlling that one). That is what I do and, especially given that there are unlikely to be multiple people working on the same template, it works just fine.

Suggestions and Requests / Re: lost the "sort" function for attribu

Good point. I would actually much like to see more accurate and detailed "release notes", describing the changes made to each release. Even a great feature is a potential risk if not well documented and therefore not expected.

Again, Sparxians!

Consider setting this option to unchecked per default, as MANY users get confused. Has anyone counted the number of posts regarding this topic?

Hi Kim,

go to menu Tools > Options > Objects and uncheck option "Sort Features Alphabetically".

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Upgraded to build 778, and found that I can no longer sort class attributes. (used to have the hand icons). I was able to do this before. Is there another function hidden somewhere to compensate, or is this a bug?

Thanks!

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Virtual directories
« on: January 10, 2006, 02:13:18 pm »
Count me in!

Simple as it seems, this would be a huge step for some of the larger companies that have tons of external documentation (that no one ever opens, but that is besides the point) in folders that sometimes are even MEANT to change as part of the regular SDLC.

In short: I second this!

Now that EA links to external documents in a neat way, I'd like to see the introduction of some virtual directories to let me shortcut access.

Let me explain.  Lets consider Element File Links - say a link to something trivial like a requirements doc.  Now, being just a test monkey, I am at the whim of the Project Office comedians when it comes to the location of a) the "latest" version, b) the current release version and c) the latest "approved" version (plus occassionally the variious "obsolete" versions).  Now, currently these versions lie at the end of a 7+ level directory structure with a path string like "G:\GROUPS\CountryLink Reform Program\TravelLink Upgrade (ORION)\SPECIFICATIONS\3.1.14 Quote Fare Module - OrionV5v2.0.pdf".  They are comedians because every now and then (approx monthy) just to justify their existence they restructure the directories.  This generates several days effort updatinng the models so the links are correct. :'(

As an aside, could we have the Notes instead of the path displayed in the Files tab list? or better still a short title for the doc would be even better.

It would be extremely cool if I could associate external documents with a virtual or logical location - like %CurrSpec%, then I wouldn't have to go through this pain every time they have another good idea!

I am sure others have the same type of problem.  Any support?

Graham - no problem, EA is full of these hidden features, some of which are actually really cool :-)

Bruno - thanks for your perseverance with this - Thanks to you I have it working !   The steps are:
- add a new note but leave the note content blank
- use "note link" to associate the note with an element
- right click on the connector between the note and the element
- select "Link this note to an element feature..."
- select "Element note" from the feature type dropdown list.

thank you very much for helping with this !
No enhancement to EA6 required

Hi Graham,

actually, it is the other way around :-) You type the note into the element's note field, then you link the external note to the element's note field as I have described above, which will display the element's "internal" note in the "external" note on the diagram. Not sure if I am making any sense, just give it a try :-)

Bruno - thanks for your reply.  It does help up to a point, but is not quite what I was getting at.

What I would like to do is have the content of the "notes" property of the element (or at least the text of the notes property) appear in the diagram without having to duplicate the text.   If I've understood correctly, with your method I could almost achieve this by just typing the text into the note item and linking it to the element and not bother with the element's own note property - but that means the note is not directly visible except on that particular diagram.

Hi Graham,

this can be done, create a note attached to an element, then right click on the line between the element and the note and click on "Link to...." or something alongside those lines (I do not have EA with me and do not remember the exact item name). This way you can link the note on a diagram to any of the element's internal features, not only a note but also a constraint, scenario etc.

Hope this helps!

I see in version 6 of EA that if you float the mouse over an element in a diagram, a tooltip/hint appears which includes at least the start of the element's notes field.   This is useful up to a point, but not on hardcopies of the diagram.

From time to time I find myself duplicating the contents of an element's notes field within a note item on the diagram to emphasize certain attributes or simply for clarity.   It would be VERY useful not to have to duplicate this text but have the option of having the note on the diagram take the text from the notes of a particular element.

thanks

That would not automatically include the printout in the generated RTF documentation though.
I would much like the option of somehow including the relationship matrix in the documentation myself.

Instead of a screen shot you could make a printout (freeware PDF printer) and then bind this to a documentatory class via the files property.
