Automation Interface, Add-Ins and Tools / Re: Use Case Templates
« on: June 04, 2004, 10:32:26 am »
Hi,

do you currently have use case descriptions in templated documents that you need to move into EA? Or do you need EA to create the documents according to your templates?
In the latter case, you can certainly do that, either by modifying the templates that EA uses to create the documentation, or by writing a script that would do so via the Automation Interface.

Hi,

I can see what you are trying to do, but I have to disagree. You can not generate code or even a GUI sceleton based on Use Cases. If you can, than you likely have Use Cases defined on an inappropriate level.

Hi,

I have been thinking about your posting some more, trying to figure out what is it that you are really trying to achieve. It sounds that what you want is not really a code generation (i.e. generation of object structures in the target language) but more of a documentation, am I right? In that case, won't the documentation functionality of EA do?

Hi,

how would you translate Use Cases into the code? In object oriented languages at least, there is nothing that would be an equivalent of a Use Case.

Hi Bernd,

did you try using hyperlinks? You could place a hyperlink on the diagram with the screen, leading to your class diagram.

Thanks, did not think of that one!

Just out of curiousity (and it is not a complaint nor a request, just a curiousity, really), but why is that? What does EA require that Oracle 8i does not provide?

Hi,

tables are represented by classes stereotypes as <<table>>. Primary Key is then modelled as a METHOD on the Class.

Hi Makarand,

I did not see your post until now! I have asked our developers to prepare the tool (we have the functionality as part of a bigger package we use for our internal projects, so we have to make the convertor to be standalone). As we are pretty busy these days, it won't be ready until the next week. Is that ok?
Please e-mail me and we can discuss this in detail.

Hi Makarand,

don't you love it when requirements change on you? You may soon find yourself having to integrate EA with Notepad! :-)

The approach you describe should work in theory, ERWin does have import from Rational Rose. There are incompatibilities between EA's and RR's XMI, but you may get lucky.
If it does not work, please do let me know. We have the functionality for a conversion from EA to ERWin (or to Oracle Designer) as well and could make it into a standalone tool if required.

Good luck!

Hi,

actually no, that is a tool for reverse engineering of PowerBuilder applications into EA.
The tool you are looking for is here:

www.standardcase.com/download/EAORADES.zip

Prior to running it, you will have to install runtime:

www.standardcase.com/download/PBCLTRT90.zip

Please let me know if you need any assistance!

Hi,

the post you mention could have been mine. We have for our internal project needs developed a tool for conversion of ERWin models into EA and are currently turning the convertor into a standalone tool that should be released shortly.
In the meantime, should you need to convert ERWin models into EA, you can follow these steps:
1. Export ERWin model into Oracle Designer (menu File > Export). Oracle Designer is available free for non-commercial use at www.oracle.com
2. Use our Oracle Designer - EA convertor to convert the ERD from Oracle Designer to EA

Hope this helps!

Hi,

it would be useful if there were a function that would return a version and a build of the EA installation.
As the Automation Interface evolves, some of the scripts may not work with older versions/builds of EA. This function would make it easy to check whether the installed version if EA is compatible with the script.

Bruno

P.S. It might be that the function like this is already there and I missed it...

Let's raise a bug, this is actually quite important to me.
You sure are a thorough tester!
