When defining a statechart diagram, it can be useful to associate a transition & trigger event to a real class (or sysml block) operation.
This is an alternative to name the transition after the triggering event (free text, not linked with anything).

In the transitions properties > Constraints tab, I can create a Trigger with the Call type to select an operation. The issue I have is that this trigger must be named so if I change later my operation, it is not automatically renamed on the diagram.
Would it be possible let's say for unnamed triggers to display the linked operation?

Synchronize structural elements on a SysML IBD is useful to add all parts.
Would it be possible to add an option where all the parts structural elements i.e. ports could be automatically added as well? Is there a workaround currently available to add all parts' ports (and parts) without having to run a custom script ?

Let's say you have 5 aggregations from your main block to blocks that have 2 ports each. Is there a way to avoid having to add inherited ports & parts via the structural elements popup on each 5 part in the IBD?

Bugs and Issues / EA13 + SysML: show port classifiers & property binding
« on: December 21, 2016, 07:29:40 pm »
I found a new diagram option under Elements in EA 13: show port classifiers.
This would be useful however I cannot get it to work.

I created a simple SysML BDD with a block + port, and set the port's classifier to a block.
The classifier is always visible, whether the option is disabled or enabled.

I also noticed the following announced improvement: "Part name change will now update bound Association role". However when renaming the part in the IBD, the association end role for the aggregation is not modified. Renaming the association end rolename updates the part but this is available in 12.1 already.

I'm running the latest 1309 build.

General Board / Associations order in the generated XSD file
« on: December 09, 2016, 03:11:55 am »

I have a project where we defined XSDcomplexType classes to generate XSD files.
Using EA Generate XML Schema command, here is an extract of what I get on the associations created between complex types:
Code: [Select]
<xs:complexType name="ComplexType1">
                    <xs:element name="element1" type="xs:string" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1"/>
                    <xs:element name="association1" type="Association1" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1"/>
                    <xs:element name="association2" type="Association2" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1"/>
                    <xs:element name="association3" type="Association3" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1"/>
                    <xs:element name="association4" type="Association4" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="1"/>
Having looked into details, EA uses the created order i.e. Connector ID value from t_connector table (I get association 4 before association 3, if I created associations in the order 1 / 2 / 4 / 3).
So the I'm looking for a way to let EA users change this order.

Could the Generate XML Schema in Sparx EA be improved to support that e.g. via tagged value or else?
I tried the Schema Composer which seems to apply an alphabetical order on the role name only. I also noticed that the Schema Composer doesn't generate an XSD content as complete as EA Generate XSD file.
I'm aware that a Schema Composer addin can be written to generate an XSD file and support additional tagged values. I did something similar to generate JSON files before, but the current context requires an option that's built in EA.

Could it be looked at by Sparx?

Bugs and Issues / SysML 1.3 IBD and EA13
« on: December 08, 2016, 11:38:13 pm »

I noticed 2 weird behaviours in EA 13 (build 1309) and SysML IBD (SysML 1.3)
I created an IBD from a block; this diagram is automatically created under the block and I can see a frame view of the block.

Once I move this diagram to a separate package, this "frame" is replaced with the block itself ; how can I prevent this? (note that if I moved it back under the block, it's ok)

I also found that port names on an IBD can be blurry when you first open the diagram (it eventually goes back to normal).

Bugs and Issues / stereotyped SysML blocks and IBD
« on: November 23, 2016, 08:11:57 am »

I defined a UML profile with stereotypes on SysML blocks.
Adding an IBD on those blocks work ok (sync element show properties and ports).

However when I add a stereotyped block as a "property" (SysML 1.3 Part), nothing happens.
If I create a normal SysML Block and then add / select my custom stereotype, then it works ok. It looks like the expected behaviour is obtained with the SysML 1.3 Block is selected as the main stereotype, and any custom stereotype must be added. This is not ideal as the associated toolbox doesn't achieve this.

Is there any this could be fixed? Any comment?

I'm working on a custom MDA transformation template with simple rules from UML Class diagram to a DDL Data Model.
The attributes transformations to perform are:
- length = UML attribute's upper bound --> length=%qt%%attUpperBound%%qt% (works ok)
- column's PK = true if UML attribute's  isId = true
- column's Not Null = true if UML attribute's  lower bound > 1

I'm struggling in finding the appropriate fields to set the latter two.. Note that the PK is stored in "t_attribute.isordered" and Not Null is stored in  "t_attribute.alloduplicates"
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Bugs and Issues / MDG - Diagram profile options not applied
« on: October 26, 2016, 08:07:31 am »

I created an MDG Tech with a UML and Diagram profiles. In the diagram profile, I needed to hide the stereotypes so I set Features - Show stereotypes = False and Elements - Hide Element Stereotypes = True.
In the target EA project where the MDG has been imported, I created a diagram. Unfortunately the hide stereotypes properties on elements and features are not set as expected.
Is it a bug?

General Board / Tagged Values order
« on: September 14, 2016, 06:52:48 pm »

I tried to find a thread on this topic as I have a feeling it's been discussed before: is there a way to change the order of Tagged Values that have manually been created on a Class or an Attribute?
I cannot find any position property in the DB e.g. within t_attributetag or t_objectproperties

EA seems to display them in the order according to their creation date/time

Any hint?

General Board / Transferring EA projects into a single one incl. images
« on: September 13, 2016, 08:16:54 pm »

I have several EA Projects that were all duplicated by a team from the same empty/base project. I need to copy each project's model root into a central new EA project.
As all projects have GUIDs in common, I have to strip GUIDs when importing into my new project (I use the XMI Model export/import).

My issue is that I'm losing associations with images. Even when I run an export/import reference data of the model images, it doesn't solve my issue.

Is there any workaround available?

I defined a custom SysML value type in a UML profile for a client (extends UML data type, generalizes SysML ValueType).
Having created flow properties on a block, I cannot set my Value Type as the property type based on the filters that are applied by EA.

A workaround is possible but this looks like a bug.

Automation Interface, Add-Ins and Tools / Apply type to change stereotypes
« on: September 06, 2016, 05:41:44 pm »

I have an MDG with SysML block stereotypes. When I create a "typeA" stereotyped block, I use to copy & paste as a new element. I want to easily apply a different stereotype on this new block e.g. change "typeA" to "typeB". As regards I used the toolbox & option Apply Block Type.
Unfortunately this block gets an additional stereotype so ends up with typeA & typeB.
I'm aware that this feature is intended to easily change an element type e.g. from a class to an interface, however I'd have expected stereotypes to be managed  in a different way.

Is there a workaround to easily change stereotypes?

If you're working with the security DB tables to retrieve permissions, you may find the following article useful as it contains a mapping between the ID and name as displayed in EA security interface.
I couldn't find a full list from the Inside EA ebook but it was easy to build. Feel free to use and share!

General Board / Customise EA12 menus with menu sets
« on: August 18, 2016, 04:36:42 pm »

I've used menu sets in Perspectives to cut down the menu content available to its users. This customization really helps new teams adopting EA as they don't get lost and confused between  features they may never use.
What I don't understand is the list of menu commands that you can hide via checkboxes. Why Sparx doesn't provide a list that matches exactly the menu tree so it's easy to check the feature that are not needed. (is it because menus always get changed between versions?).
Considering the current state of this list, is there any table that maps the current tree list with EA12.1 menus?
Here is an issue I'm having: I want to remove the ANALYZER menu for users, however I still have some features available when Execution Analysis is unticked. Having disabled all options for a menu set, I discovered that a number of features remain available. It makes sense for some features under File and Edit, but it doesn't for Analyzer, Element > Project Management, etc.

Could some leftover menus be hidden perhaps with an additional option? I looked at the userperspective XML file -> an id to each hidden feature is provided so could it be tweaked by adding additional values ?

I'm looking at the most suitable option to transfer a single EA project with multiple project root nodes to multiple EA projects, one for each project root node.
As I want to retain all the information in each project, I want to avoid using XMI export/import e.g. to keep existing images, matrix, etc.
I also need to retain the GUIDs from the source project in the target projects.

I wanted to copy/paste the EAP file with all the content and project roots for each target project. Then cleaning each EAP by deleting all project root nodes except the root node that needs to be kept.
The final stage would involve transferring each EAP file to a target EA DB centralised project.

Since the project is quite large, I takes ages to delete unwanted root nodes. Considering also that I have to delete all the views prior to delete a root node. Even this way crashes at some point EA or generates errors.
I tried running the Repository.Models.DeleteAt method but it crashes EA...

Anyone aware of an easy option to achieve this via a script or other?
