Strangely enough since EA can generate SQL scripts to create the dB tables from your db schema model, you would think that it can read SQL CREATE scripts to generate a model instead of having to create the schema in a DBMS and import via ODBC.

Unless EA9 supports this..

General Board / Retro engineering : class/SQL schema
« on: May 11, 2011, 05:40:20 pm »
Hi

My client sent me the DB schema i.e. all CREATE TABLE SQL scripts
I'd like to generate a DB diagram in EA from these scripts, and then generate a class diagram .

Any hint on how to do this?

thanks

General Board / Find opened diagram in browser
« on: May 19, 2011, 10:23:56 pm »
It doesn't seem to be possible to show the diagram that's currently opened in the Project Browser as available for Elements
It may sound useless as you open in the 1st place the diagram from the project browser, but.. if you have a hyperlink from a diagram opening a new diagram, it could be useful to show the current diagram in the browser

does it sound like a feature request if not avail?

General Board / Re: Red arrow above requirement

Thanks, it's actually explained in EA Help.
A red triangle above an element means that it's been bookmarked.

Hi,

I sometimes get a red arrow on the middle top of some of my requirement elements when displayed in a diagram, but cannot figure its meaning.
Any clue?

General Board / Interaction overview diagram in EA 7.5 build 850
« on: April 27, 2011, 03:36:14 am »
Hi

I'm using EA 7.5 build 850 that oddly doesn't support object flows between interaction occurences (e.g. linked to a sequence diagram)

I tried on an earlier version of EA and it works.
Is there a workaround to get it to work on EA7.5 as I cannot upgrade the version on this specific PC I'm using?

thanks

General Board / Display both the Title and Alias for a Requirement
« on: April 18, 2011, 11:36:46 pm »
Hi
I needed to display in a requirements diagram both the name and the alias for each requirement.
I thought that EA only let me display either way
I eventually found a way to this issue for anyone who has the same need (or requirement...  ;)) :
- In your Diagram properties, enable Use Alias If Available
- In Tools > options : Diagram > Behavior > Alias usage : select the option "Alias and Name"

My question for a related need is whether I can display in EA Project Browser the alias for each element in addition to its name and  stereotype

cheers

General Board / Re: profile based on SysML Block Definition Diagra

I guess that if you need to use SysML and define stereotypes on its meta classes such  as Block, you need to have the proper edition of EA (Ultimate or SysML addon)

General Board / Re: 4+1 architecture

Hi Rob,

to answer your question, I would identify all use cases in EA.
This is what I do for all my projects ; use cases allow to define the scope of your system

You don't have to go into details for each of them (e.g. describing all scenarios and their steps)
Once you have all your use case items, you can build your traceability through dependency associations with other elements of your model.

Hi Rob,

I never used the 4+1 model in a given project but did some investigations a while ago for a prospect client and it doesn't seem far from what I'm doing in EA currently i.e. requirements model, analysis model (use case, ...), design model, and architecture model.
The core of my EA project is traceability e.g. from requirements to use cases, by instanciating an object from a class, etc.

In the 4+1 model, if asked to apply this, I would create the following using EA when suitable EA default models :
- a use case model (the "+1" model)
- a domain/class model = logical view
- a business process model = process view, for my activity diags
- a component model = the dev view (component diagrams)
- a deployment model = physical view (apply components to nodes)

Of course this is just the EA project template to start with. The processes involved in running your project are to be defined and followed in a manner that makes use of your EA project structure, adapting it when necessary. However the project should be lead by the use cases and its scenarios

General Board / 4+1 architectural view EA project ?
« on: November 15, 2010, 11:18:46 pm »
Hi,

I'm likely to use the 4+1 architectural view project (for any information, check out Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4%2B1_Architectural_View_Model).

EA has this listed in its list of project samples but it only generates empty project (with Logical, Process view, etc.)
Has anyone used this approach and could share a sample project ?

Thanks!  :)
