General Board / Customize connector names in Traceability?
« on: October 14, 2011, 09:26:56 pm »
Hi all,

I was wondering if it is possible to customize the names of connectors when they are shown in the Traceability window. A Realization, for instance, is shown as "implements" and "realized by".

Are these configurable or customizable in any way? I'm not averse to defining my own stereotypes if that's what it takes, but I can't find any suitable stereotype attributes.

What I'm after is being able to draw <<refines>> Dependencies between Requirements, but these show up in the Traceability window as "depends on" and "needed by".

General Board / Really simple one: operation array parameters
« on: May 06, 2009, 09:48:36 pm »
Hey everybody,

I'm almost embarrassed to ask, but admitting that you have a problem is the first step and all that.

Specifying that an operation parameter is an array: how?

Operation return values may be specified as as arrays by ticking the box in the operation details dialog. But there's no similar one in the parameter detail dialog.

If I manually add [] to the end of the parameter type name, EA doesn't warn me that the parameter fails to parse, which it does if I add, say, just the [.

So is this the correct way of doing it, or is there another correcter way?

General Board / Parameterised Classes
« on: April 26, 2009, 03:24:45 pm »
Hey everybody,

I'm trying to model a pretty simple parameterised class. I want it to take a single parameter which is a class (Blarg), and so far so good.

I would then expect to be able to use the Blarg class as a type in the attribute and operation definitions within my parameterised class. But I can't.

Since the attribute and operation type fields allow free input, I could just write Blarg in there.
I could also create an inner class to my parameterised class and call that Blarg.

But neither is correct, so I don't wanna.  >:(

Am I doing something wrong here?

General Board / How to retain Class part layout in Object?
« on: March 21, 2009, 01:40:22 am »
Hi!

I've got a Class with a number of Parts, carefully laid out graphically. When I create an Object of this Class (drag - Paste as Instance - Include Embedded Elements) the Object has all the Parts, but the graphic layout is lost.

I'm modelling hardware, things like 48-port switches. Kinda don't want to have to redo the layout in each Object. :)

Anyone got a workaround? Or a far far better way of modelling hardware?

General Board / Importing model from Tau
« on: February 10, 2009, 08:32:52 pm »
Hi!

Does anyone have any experience with importing a Tau model into EA? Pitfalls, dos&don'ts, that sort of thing?
I'm looking at a one-off scenario so it's no biggie if there's a fair bit of manual labour involved.

General Board / Anyone for Ada?
« on: October 17, 2007, 08:14:19 pm »
Hello people,

Just wondering if anyone's got a Profile for Ada tucked up their sleeve somewhere. Or better yet, a full-on Add-In with reverse engineering capabilities.
Anybody?

Hello?
Is there an echo in here?

Bugs and Issues / Decision tables in EA11
« on: November 17, 2015, 01:13:28 am »
Hi all,

In the View menu in EA 11.1, there's a disabled item Decision Table. Is it supposed to work, and if so how do I open it?

The help file says it should enable when I select an activity in a diagram. It doesn't.
The help file also says there should be a Decision Table item in the diagram context menu for activities, as well as a Decision Table toolbar. I haven't been able to locate either.
I am using the Complete command set.

According to the version history, the function was introduced in EA 11.0.1105, not touched in the remaining 11.0 or 11.1 releases, then in 1207 it was added to a portal, and activities became renderable as decision tables.

But I can't find any way to add them in the first place. Is this a case of the help file and bits of the GUI being shipped before the function was in place, or am I just doing something wrong?

Cheers,

Bugs and Issues / Chart colours [11.1]
« on: October 01, 2015, 08:25:13 pm »
Hello,

I've set up a number of bar charts to display status (Proposed, Approved, Validated) as fetched out of various packages. Problem is, the bar colours are inconsistent and I can't find any way to specify which ones I want.

It seems that if all elements that go into one chart have the same status the bars are blue (the number of groups, ie number of bars, has no impact). If there are two different statuses in the data, the colours are blue and red. Three statuses, blue red and green.

But if I show two of these charts side by side, and in one package everything is Proposed and in the other everything is Validated, both charts are solid blue. That's not what I want -- remember, these are status charts intended to be read by managers, so reading and understanding the legend in a chart is quite beyond the target audience.

So: how can I specify which colours are used in each chart?

I've looked in the tagged value that contains the chart definition, but I can't find anything there.

Any ideas?

Bugs and Issues / Group ordering in bar charts [11.1]
« on: September 29, 2015, 11:26:46 pm »
Hi all,

I've set up a status-tracking chart which uses a simple SQL snippet.

I'm using the bar, rather than column, appearance category, because the group names are rather long and, in a column chart, EA simply skips group names which are too long. (The longest is only 47 characters, including spaces, but in order to get them all to display I have to stretch the chart over several screens, which kinda defeats the purpose of getting a quick overview.)

The problem is that the bar chart orders the groups in reverse alphabetical order. I want them in regular alphabetical order or, even better, I want to control the ordering from within my SQL snippet. After some testing, however, it appears that anything following an "order by" clause is simply ignored -- doesn't even have to be syntactically correct.

So: can I get EA to order the bars in proper alphabetical order?

Or, failing that, can I switch to the column category and get EA to wrap the group names? Or change the text orientation?

Cheers,

Bugs and Issues / Linked document and element update time
« on: August 28, 2015, 05:58:48 pm »
Hi all,

If I've got a «Document» and I edit its contents, the element update time is unchanged. This would only be a minor annoyance if not for the fact that the element is not marked as modified in a baseline comparison.

Is this by design or a bug? I'm on EA 11, btw.

Bugs and Issues / CSV import: tagged values
« on: January 29, 2015, 07:20:06 pm »
Hey hi!

I've got an Excel spreadsheet I need to import and which will need to be reimported on a regular basis (monthly).
The spreadsheet has a dozen-odd columns which I place into tagged values. I import the rows as non-stereotyped Components, and all tags are simple text; I haven't specified any tagged value types in the project.
In other words, neither the set of tags nor the value ranges are predefined, everything's created on the fly.

If a cell is empty, no corresponding tag is created. That's fine.
But I've noticed that on reimport, if a cell has become empty (ie had a value in the previous import but not now), the corresponding tag is not deleted.

I assume this is by design -- EA supports duplicate tag names, and the tag GUIDs are not included in a CSV export. But what about using a profile?
Would the tag be cleared if I used a stereotype with a predefined set of tags?

Cheers,

Bugs and Issues / EA busy when idle
« on: January 20, 2015, 10:42:29 pm »
Hi all,

I've got a problem with a specific repository. Whenever I connect to this repository, EA starts doing something in the background, causing unresponsiveness in the GUI to the point where the tool is essentially unusable.

According to the task manager, a CPU spike occurs about every two seconds and causes the "I/O Other" counts to increase (the I/O read/write counts are not affected). Each time, a 44K chunk of memory is allocated and deallocated. Over time, EA consumes about two CPU seconds a minute when supposedly idle.

The repository has recently been set up and transferred from an .EAP file. There are several other repositories on the same server, and none of them are experiencing the same issue.

The connection uses lazy load. External version control is not configured. The reusable asset service is not used.

Auditing had been switched on at some point. Nobody's owned up to this and I've switched it off, but this has had no effect.

I've tried disabling all Add-Ins -- no effect.

The repository is on an MS SQL Server server, and I'm using EA 1112 with floating licenses (corporate). According to the DBAs the transaction log is not unexpectedly large.

Anybody know what's going on?

Cheers,

Bugs and Issues / Do RelatedElement shape scripts work at all?
« on: December 12, 2014, 10:13:35 pm »
Hi!

I'm working on a profile with some shape scripts, and I need to use the RelatedElement script -- but it doesn't seem to work. At all. Even copying the scripts from the help file gives no results.

Let's say I create a stereotype with the following shape script:
Code: [Select]
shape RelatedElement {
      SetCompartmentName("connections");
      AppendCompartmentText("Element.Name");
}

shape ChildElement {
      SetCompartmentName("kiddies");
      AppendCompartmentText("#Name#");
}
I then create an element (S) with that stereotype, plus one child element which I place inside it in the project browser.
I also create two other elements (X and Y). I draw a Dependency from X to S, and one from S to Y.

The diagram displays the "kiddies" compartment, and I can select presentation of it in the corresponding dialog, all's well.
But the "connections" compartment doesn't show up at all.

Is this thing simply not working, or am I doing something wrong?
I have tried the sample scripts exactly as they appear in the help file (with the check for connector type etc) -- no go. I've also tried just setting a fix text in the compartment -- nope-a-dope.

I'm on 1107, but there's no mention of any changes to the shape scripts anywhere in the 11.1 history.

Any clues?

Cheers,

Bugs and Issues / EA 11 RTF bork bork bork
« on: October 30, 2014, 01:54:52 am »
Hi all,

Having very serious issues with EA 11 and RTF document generation. There is an earlier thread on this, but there's no resolution.
  • EA crashes during generation. No error message, just terminates.
  • EA crashes during template editing - sometimes simply from selecting a bit of text and hitting Ctrl-C.
  • I've even observed bit rot, where a template that was working suddenly stops working, after making non-template changes to the MDG Technology and regenerating the XML file.
My templates were originally written in EA 10 (some in EA 9). Does anyone have any magic recipe for fixing these and making sure they don't break again?

Cheers,

/Uffe
