Suggestions and Requests / Allow keyboard shortcuts for addins
« on: August 21, 2009, 09:58:43 pm »
Apparently this feature has been requested before, but I can't find the topic in this forum so I'll just create one.

I would like to be able to assign a keyboard shortcut to my add-in menu options.

I'll send an official request as well.

Suggestions and Requests / Association.isDerived as a regular property
« on: March 24, 2009, 07:48:26 pm »
After a little queeste I finally found how to make an association derived. Apparently the isDerived property of an association has to be set via advanced/custom properties.
This is far from intuitive and not documented in the user guide.
I only found the solution by searching the forum.
I propose to add a tickbox "Derived" in the association (connector) properties dialog.

If you define an InformationFlow between two activities then you can select InformationItems to be conveyed.
Currently there seems to be no way to navigate from the informationFlow to the InformationItem conveyed, or vice versa.
It would be nice that, starting from the InformationItem we could see all InformationFlows that convey this InformationItem, and the other way around; starting from the InformationFlow navigate to the InformationItems conveyed.

General Board / Schema Composer: how to create simple types?
« on: November 04, 2015, 07:45:50 pm »

We haven been asked to provide our logical data model as an XSD to an implementor.
I started looking at the new Schema Composer, as it seems to be designed for tasks like this.

The first try was rather successful, but now I'm a bit stuck with the datatypes we defined.
For example we have a datatype called GUID_Type. In XSD this should look like this:
Code: [Select]
<xs:simpleType name="GUID_Type">
      <xs:restriction base="xs:string">
            <xs:pattern value="[a-f0-9]{8}-[a-f0-9]{4}-[a-f0-9]{4}-[a-f0-9]{4}-[a-f0-9]{12}"/>
But all I get from the Schema composer is
Code: [Select]
<xs:complexType name="GUID_Type">

Is there any way I can tell the schema composer to translate my datatype as a simpleType?

General Board / Association(end).isID missing?
« on: October 21, 2015, 05:19:09 pm »
A client of mine uses the isID property of an attribute to indicate a the fact that the attribute is a key for the element.
Now they also want to do this for associations. According to the UML specifications an association links 2 or more properties (=>association role). A Property has following attributes:
· aggregation : AggregationKind [1..1] = none
Specifies the kind of aggregation that applies to the Property.
· /isComposite : Boolean [1..1] = false
If isComposite is true, the object containing the attribute is a container for the object or value contained in the
attribute. This is a derived value, indicating whether the aggregation of the Property is composite or not.
· isDerived : Boolean [1..1] = false
Specifies whether the Property is derived, i.e., whether its value or values can be computed from other
· isDerivedUnion : Boolean [1..1] = false
Specifies whether the property is derived as the union of all of the Properties that are constrained to subset it.
· isID : Boolean [1..1] = false
True indicates this property can be used to uniquely identify an instance of the containing Class.

but I can't seem to find any checkbox or field on the association roles to indicate isID.

Am I missing something, or did I misunderstood something here? :-/

Since Simon makes sure EA follows the UML standard tot the letter I'm sure there must be something I overlooked.

General Board / Keep diagram and caption on the same page in RTF
« on: June 19, 2015, 05:29:50 pm »
When generating RTF documents EA resizes my diagrams so they fit exactly on a page.

That is a good thing of course, but...
With each diagram we add a caption containing the figure number, and the name of the diagram.
Because the diagrams are resized to fit the page, the caption is consistently put on the next page.
So after generating the document we have to go over it and make each diagram a little bit smaller so the caption is on the same page as the actual diagram.

Is there any way we can tell EA that the diagram + caption need to fit on a page?

General Board / EA v12 (BETA) feedback
« on: November 07, 2014, 11:33:48 pm »
I just installed EA v12 and looked around a bit.
Here are my first impressions:

- I lost my workpace layouts !?! Why? I needed those, they worked for me and now I have to redo them. Pretty annoying start.

- BreadCrum/Navigation bar on top is nice. The "back/forward" arrows promise something much better, but unfortunately they don't deliver. Pressing the "back" button only selects the parent package in the project browser, not the previously opened diagram.

- The properties dialogs. OMG Everything is different, and they have re-instated tabs, TABS EVERYWHERE!!! Anyone who had any documentation about EA can now start to rewrite (and copy/paste printscreens) because it all look very different now.

What are your first impressions?

General Board / Integration with Microsoft Test Manager (MTM)
« on: November 28, 2014, 07:11:01 pm »
Does anyone know if there's an existing integration between EA and Microsoft Test Manager (MTM - part of the Visual Studio/TFS suite)

We would like to define our tests in EA, but the management of the test execution should be in Microsoft Test Manager.

General Board / Learn how to write an EA add-in in Munich Oct 7
« on: September 18, 2014, 04:02:59 pm »
I'll be giving a workshop titled "Create your first Enterprise Architect add-in
in 10 minutes" at the EA user group event in Munich where I will demonstrate just how easy it is to create an add-in for EA.

Of course there's much more, check the full agenda at

General Board / Opening all sections in the toolbox by default?
« on: July 29, 2014, 06:14:54 pm »
Since v11 suddenly only one section in my toolboxes is opened, and the other sections (relationships, common, artifacts) are collapsed.
So I now need an extra mouseclick if I want to add a relationship, or a note.

Is there some kind of setting that restores the old behavior where all sections were opened by default?

Anyone know what has been changed since the previous beta release (11.0.1100) ?

General Board / EA on FireBird is so slow!
« on: February 12, 2014, 05:51:55 pm »
I've been playing around with the FireBird backend to make the EA Navigator add-in work on that repository as well. (don't you just love the subtle differences in SQL "standard")
By testing it I noticed that it is lots and lots slower then .eap.
From my gut feeling (I haven't actually measured it) from fast to slow measured on a scale from 1 to 10
- .eap (MS Access) => 1
- MySQL => 3
- Oracle => 5
- .feap (FireBird) => 10

What is your experience?

General Board / EA Navigator 2.4 released
« on: August 06, 2013, 04:18:27 pm »
The main new feature of the version 2.4 of the EA Navigator is the Quicksearch.

The Quicksearch feature is undoubtedly the fastest way to find anything in a (large) EA model. It is the type of feature which makes you wonder how you could live without it all that time before.
