General Board / Location Catalogue
« on: March 22, 2017, 11:41:22 am »
Hi All,

Just looking for some suggestions on how to demonstrate/articulate a location catalogue in EA.

I was going to use Archimate to help present a simple diagram using the business interface element, but not sure how best to go about and implement.

Ideally I would like to change the appearance of the element to demonstrate what it represents.

My goal is demonstrate our offices where our people reside and potentially other sites like data centers, etc....

Happy to hear some suggestions.

Kind Regards,

Stoppy  ;)

General Board / Distorted BPMN Diagram Shapes and Connectors
« on: March 15, 2017, 10:38:24 am »
Hi All,

Is anyone experiencing distorted BPMN Diagram Shapes and Connectors shapes?

I've noticed the behavior occurs when zooming in and out.

I have found myself spending a large amount of time aligning activity elements and fixing connectors to ensure the arrow heads are displaying correctly and to produce a professional looking model. Is there a way to set EA connectors to connect cleanly between elements???

Also I have noticed the gateway and end events will be a little warped/distorted when zooming in and out??

Currently using Windows 10 Build 1607 14393 and EA 13.01.1309.

Regards,

Stoppy

General Board / Set Font Size - Add New Element From Toolbox
« on: December 04, 2014, 04:46:33 pm »
Hi All,

I have searched the forum post for this, but unable to resolve my little problem.  I have built a model and set out my placeholder elements and now starting to scale out my diagram.

My problem is when I add a new element from the toolbox, I have to manually apply the font size.

I understand I can select CTRL - A to select all and apply the fonts at once, but I am finding this requires me to go back and resize elements after I have progressed and reapply relevant cosmetic layout.

So, my question is can you set a default font size for elements when they are added from the toolbox?

Thanks in advance,

Stoppy  :D

General Board / Business Capability Model
« on: December 01, 2014, 02:35:12 pm »
Hi All,

I tried searching past forums but unable to find what I am trying to do.

So I will try an explain what I am trying to do.  :o

We are about introduce a new what I would call "capability" which will transform our business and technology architectures. What I want to do is build a model which will demonstrate the following:
1. The period of the capability development
2. The stages of capability development
3. The core placeholders (Activities) for the capability development
4. Optional - Benefits realized.

My intent is to present this one page model to help facilitate conversation with various stakeholders and assist the development of the program of work for the change.

My question is, has anyone built such a model and if so what is the best diagram type in EA to assist with this activity?

Thanks in advance,

Stoppy!  ;)

General Board / Good Job Sparx!!!!
« on: October 30, 2014, 04:40:56 pm »
Well Done Sparx, I just updated to EA 11.1 build (1112) and created my first new BPMN model and did not have to wrestle with the nesting of lanes in pools and lanes in lanes for 15 minutes to get my model to look nice and professional.

Great improvement on the nesting!!!

General Board / Relationship Matrix for BPMN
« on: November 15, 2013, 11:06:19 am »
Hi All,

I am trying to use the relationship matrix function in EA to build a matrix of a BPMN model with Lanes on the Horizontal axis and Activities on the Vertical axis. The intent is to use it as a possible baseline to define a RACI model.

I can build the matrix successfully, but my problem is I am unable to get the grids to represent the relationship from the activities to there respective lanes.

The only thing I can think of is there is no specific link type for this style of relationship even though the activity element lives within the lane element within the project browser.

Can anyone give me a prompt where I might be going wrong?

General Board / Business Architecture - Advice Please!
« on: July 24, 2013, 03:29:45 pm »
Hi All,

Just looking for some advice with my packaging in EA. The reason being my core skills are BPMN and Business Analysis/software development and the way things are I am quickly ascending into the Enterprise Architecture space and dancing across all domains. Look Out!  ;D

My current task I have built the following package structure in my current state:

Level 1 - Function Model
Level 2 - Business Services, Contracts, Service Qualities
Level 2 - Process, Events, Controls, Products
Level 2 - Functions

There may be a level 3 under some Level 2.

So, I have populated these packages with our organsiational functions, services and products.

I have then created a package called "View Model" and then another package called "Business Product, Service, Function View" and dragged the functions, services and products from the above packages onto my diagram to build a view for my stakeholders.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Is this best practice what I doing?
2. Should I use this respository of elements to build other diagrams and stakeholder views?
3. Am I over complicating things and is there a better way to do this?
4. I am using manage baselines to help version control the package through the stakeholder iterations, should I beware of anything with this function?

Thanks in advance,

Stoppy :D

General Board / Managing Redundant/No longer used Elements
« on: September 10, 2013, 08:38:06 am »
Hi All,

I have done some searching and unable to find any topics on this subject.

We have several products, services and functions through discovery, robust debate and testing are either no longer required or are a subset of the agreed products, services and functions and will transform in the Business Architecture into other elements such as process, activities, etc...

My question is how do I manage the products, services and function elements that are no longer required. I do not want to delete them, just wondering if any one has any suggestions.

One thought was to create a package called recycle bin and just park them here and exclude the package from the nightly HTML export. Any thoughts would be great???

General Board / Symbol, Icon or Visual Representation of Element
« on: August 05, 2013, 09:13:22 am »
Hi All,

I am using Archimate to build a model for some key stakeholders in my organisation. All has been going well using the Services, Functions, Product elements to build out the view which provides the visual representation and icons.

We have now had some government and financial based stakeholders come into the picture and grappling with language. For example, a Product is called "Services" and Services is called "Suboutput". Not All products and services need to be represented this way.

I already using the legend to represent the size of each element, ie. Small, Medium, Large.

So my question, is there a way I can use another a symbol, icon or some other visual representation on these elements to satisfy my stakeholders.

At worst case scenario, I was going to update the text for each element and put in brackets the relevant description:

Example:

Product "My Product is a Secret (Service)"

Please note I am using the EA user interface only.

Stoppy  :)

General Board / Manage Baselines / Version Control
« on: January 16, 2013, 04:51:36 pm »
Hi All,

In a previous organisation i lead the implementation of EA and TFS integration successfully. Since then I have moved on to a smaller organisation and I am back evaluating the version control feature in EA.

We are a small shop of 2/3 modellers and I have stumbled accross the Manage Baseline feature which offers a manual way to version control items in EA.

I am just wondering if anyone has used this feature and can think of any pros/cons I should consider if we embark down this road.

I have played with it today have so far found:

Pros
- Provides manual incremental version numbering
- Provides the ability to comment on version
- Provides the date of the version
- Provides the ability to roll back and forward my incremental changes
- Provides a show differences (Yet to get my head around this :-/)
- Is Free  ::)
Cons
- Can only be used on Packages (meaning all my processes need to have a package level to get granular version control per diagram)

Thanks in advance,

Stoppy ;)

General Board / Assistance with Automating the HTML Report
« on: October 30, 2012, 05:37:39 pm »
Hi All,

As I move through our EA jounery our EA database is starting to grow and therefore the HTML report taking longer to generate.

I refer you to this link as to what I am trying to achieve in bold: http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/products/ea/index.html

and this promotion of the product:

Automation - Harness the Power
The Automation Interface lets you access the internals of Enterprise Architect models.

Some examples of tasks you could perform via the Automation Interface:
•Automatically generate and publish a daily HTML report to your local intranet

•Script repetitive tasks, such as property update common to all model elements
•Generate code from a state machine or diagram
•Produce custom reports
•Execute ad hoc queries against the model
Any development environment capable of generating ActiveX Com clients can be used to connect to Enterprise Architect's Automation Interface.

At my last company I was able to refer my developer to some technical documentation and with a bit of back and forth between us he automated the process for me, in simple terms (Delete Existing HTML on share, Called EA, Generate and Publish HTML, Send Output Notification)

At my new job I don't have any developers at present and wondering is there a simle way of doing this or do you require a technical background to get this solution implemented. At a minimum this stage I would be happy with the job publishing every night. (I can manage the delete and check output for the interim)

Any assistance or guidance is appreciated.

Regards,

Stoppy

General Board / Goal Element
« on: October 09, 2012, 04:18:27 pm »
Hi All,

I am mapping a business process and I want to represent it's goal. Can someone tell me where the "Goal" element might reside in the toolbox.

Everything I have search seems to bring me back to these pages:

Goals - http://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/9.3/domain_based_models/goals.html

Business Models - http://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/9.3/domain_based_models/businessmodelling.html

I am using 9.3.933 and I am Corp Edition.

Thanks in advance

General Board / Importing Source Code Lotus Notes Script
« on: August 16, 2012, 08:29:15 am »
Hi All,

Long time reader, first time posting  :)

I am just wondering if anyway has come across a requirement to reverse engineer and import Lotus Note Script into EA.

I know the file type is not supported based on this link and this has been confirmed by Sparx - http://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/9.3/software_engineering/reverseengineersourcecode.html

But just wondering if anyone may have devised a workaround solution.

If that fails, we'll just have to put in the hard work and workshop the business processes and do some analysis.

Regards,

Stoppy
