Suggestions and Requests / Custom Data Fragments with Multiple Datasets
« on: August 29, 2014, 05:41:37 am »
I'd really like to be able to have nested datasets in a single custom fragment. I want produce a number of tables, in a fragment, but the current system only seems to allow a single series of rows, and no nesting or anything like that.

Given that I'm returning an XML dataset, it would seem to be the ideal format to allow that.

Suggestions and Requests / Structured scenarios need more flexibility
« on: July 23, 2014, 05:53:08 pm »

I need to be able to have looped steps, and to have alternate paths availabile within alternate paths, and to have excpetions within alternatives and alternatives within excetptions.

The current system is fine for very simple processes, but I don't want to have to break down the activity, which is at the right level currently, into another level of diagrammes and activities, when more flexible structured scenarios would suffice, and be more appropriate for my model.

General Board / Prevent Return Type Suffix on Elements
« on: November 04, 2015, 09:00:56 pm »

Does anyone know how to stop EA suffixing the "Name" attribute (when queried) with the return type?

It doesn't appear in the "properties" window, but it does on the main project browser, and also when using "Element.Name" in a document.

General Board / Missing Tools Menu
« on: July 22, 2015, 09:26:41 pm »
Help! I've somehow managed to delete the Tools menu option from the menu bar, and it appears the only way to configure the menus is by the Tools|Customize option - which I obviously can't get to now.

How do I get my Tools menu back?

(I'm using EA12 on a Mac via Crossover)
It appears to have happened due to a sticky mac command key (which I assume maps to the windows key) which seems to allow me to move or remove menus but not to add them back!

General Board / Scenarios - exceptions/loops in an alternate path
« on: July 23, 2014, 12:34:41 am »
Hi Everyone!

I'm using structured scenarios to detail the steps in activities that don't really need to be broken down into further detail.

I may be being very dim here, but the rule on only allowing alternate paths and exceptions to the basic path seems very restrictive.

What happens if you have an exception in the alternate path?

What happens if there is an exception in your exception process?

Only way I've found of representing looping behaviour is to have an alternate path that rejoins the main path at the beginning of the loop - but what happens when my alternate path needs a looping behaviour?

I'm really hoping I can find a way around this, or I'm going to have to write all my process steps manunally rather than using EA. EEK!

Bugs and Issues / ActivityPartition "claims" edge-mounted event
« on: October 23, 2014, 01:37:40 am »

I've noted since the latest upgrade, ActivityPartitions in a BPMN diagram are very aggressively moving items within the partition into the partition within the model hierarchy. This is annoying with some items I have linked to, but completely unusable when just moving the activity partition causes it to move an edge mounted start event from the activity it's supposed to be linked to, and mounts it on the activity partition!

Has anyone else had this happen? Does it need to be raised as a bug.

Any suggestions appreciated...

Bugs and Issues / Scripting engine seems to "cache" parts of scripts
« on: October 23, 2014, 02:25:41 am »

I'm having some very weird stuff going on with a script in 11.1.1112.

I run a script a few times, and make changes from one run to another. After a few runs, it appears to cache certain functions, and not run the current script.

In order to get the changes to run, I need to quit EA and restart.

It even did this across projects - I closed one project, opened a new one, and run a script with a function having the same name, and it ran the function from the previous project, not the current one.

Is there some setting I need to change or is this a bug? (It's hard to reproduce at will, as it only happens from time to time.)

Uml Process / Postcondition in a BPMN Business Process element
« on: October 21, 2014, 08:55:13 pm »

I've tried to add a postcondition (in the advanced attributes section of the properties page) and it's made a complete mess of the diagram element. It seems to have vertically partitioned the business process element and shown the postcondition as a stereotype on the right hand side. Nothing I do will remove this - even explicitly suppressing postcondition in the stereotypes feature visibility.

Does anyone know how to stop this, other than by removing the postcondition (which I'm using for documentation elsewhere).

This only appears on Business Process elements. Activity elements are fine.

Uml Process / How to represent a process call in BPMN
« on: October 06, 2014, 10:58:35 pm »

I have a diagram I want to put one process on, but called from more than one flow. I'm obviously looking at this all wrong, because I can't find anything by googling.

How do I represent the following on the same diagram?

Start --> Activity 1 --> Process --> Activity 2 --> End

Start --> Activity 3 --> Call to Same Process as Above --> Activity 4 --> End

Thanks for looking!

Uml Process / Representing accounting consequences of activities
« on: June 11, 2014, 01:29:31 am »
Hi! I'm trying to model a set of processes in BPMN, which include buying, stock movements etc., and each of these physical processes has an accounting consequence.

Is there any accepted way of showing the debit/credit impacts of an activity? Googling hasn't come up with anything useful.

Hi! I'm generating documents in EA12.1, and it would seem that whenever I have a notes field in my template, such as {Element.Notes}, {Att.Notes} or {Meth.Notes}, it puts a blank line after the notes field, regardless of the fact there is no blank line within the notes page, and I've been very careful to ensure that there is no blank line are in the template that aren't properly bookmarked, every notes field is followed by a blank line.

It makes my tables look ridiculous!  :(

Is there any way of stopping it, or do I need to file a bug report?

I had written a script in EA 11 which worked brilliantly. When I called DocumentElement for a full template, it bookmarked the element with it's GUID. In EA 12, it appeared to bookmark the element incorrectly. In 12.1 it's working better again, except where I reference the element more than once.

It appears, that if I have element X referred to (as a custom fragment via a specific template) in the document, and then document element X again using a normal template, the start bookmark is the first time I referred to it, and the end bookmark is the end of the second time I document it.

Is there any way of preventing the engine from bookmarking the references from the custom fragment?
(I manually generate a table which includes bookmarked references to the main entry for the element, which worked beautifully in EA 11, but hasn't worked properly since. The custom fragment reference could be before or after the main entry.)

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Automation Interface, Add-Ins and Tools / What is the scope of ReplaceField?
« on: September 16, 2015, 11:05:27 pm »
I'm using the EA12 (1215) document generator API to create some documentation. I've a situation where is would be very useful to replace the field value for one or two fields within a template in a particular situation, so I've tried the following JScript fragment:

Code: [Select]
generationSuccess = docGenerator.DocumentElement( connectedElement.ElementID, level, PROCESS_TEMPLATE );
if ( !generationSuccess )
    ReportWarning( "Error generating process documentation: " + docGenerator.GetLastError() );
generationSuccess = docGenerator.ReplaceField("Element.Name", "Method: " + method.Name );
if ( !generationSuccess )
    ReportWarning( "Error replacing field: " + docGenerator.GetLastError() );

However, it doesn't seem to replace the field, or give any error. What it does seem to do is truncate the document at the point I call ReplaceField

I don't understand the scope of the ReplaceField method, since wherever I put it, it either breaks the document, or does nothing.

The only reason I could think of for this not doing anything, is that the template calls fragments in which the `Element.Name` field was referenced, but having converted the fragment to a template and called it explicitly, ReplaceField still seems to do nothing.

Does anyone have a good example piece of script that uses ReplaceField effectively with element data fields?

The ACMEContextDocumentGenerator example I've found so far only uses ReplaceField on a single document level custom data field, which is not what I'm trying to do.

Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, since I've tried everything I can think of.

I've upgraded from EA11 to EA12, and since doing so, when I generate documentation, using a custom script and custom fragments, I note that the bookmark that had the element's GUID and used to surround the element, now appears to start and end at the end of the element's title.

This means that the bookmark now cannot be used for constructing references. (i.e. see paragraph 3.4)

Does anyone know why this has changed, or how to get it to work the way it used to?

Is there a way to pass a null value, rather than an empty element, in a custom script XML?

If I define a row without, say a "Name" element, the output from the custom fragment is to show "Name". If I create a <Name/> element, the fragment "prints" the blank - but includes the headings and space I'd like to remove with bookmarks.

Is there any way of having an optional custom field and using bookmarks with it, like you can with normal fragments?
