General Board / Re: Is this Sparx book relevant for Sparx 10.10 ?
« on: April 10, 2014, 11:32:13 pm »
This link has 3 books that we always recommend for our customers to use:

I would start with Version 10 now and then move up once you get the basics - and yes, they can coexist.
Version 11 is just in RC1 now and may likely get another round of updates soon.

General Board / Re: How to Build DODAF Diagrams?
« on: March 20, 2014, 12:02:42 am »
We work with many customers using Sparx - we are consultants/trainers in North America. The diagrams are dependent on the project team. We have used all of them.

Thank you for the update information!  :)
Can you remove that MDG add-in from the website since it is no longer valid?

You need to use the UPDM or DoDAF/MoDAF MDG addins profile for creating DoDAF type diagrams. And BPMN diagrams are not part of DoDAF anyway, so you have to decide another diagram type to use unless you want to include BPMN and UML Activity diagrams into your UPDM profile. We have helped customers learn how to do this if you are interested - we offer a Sparx UPDM trng course and also provide project consulting to build project artifacts with EA that support DoDAF.

General Board / Re: RSA import difficulties
« on: January 29, 2014, 01:43:21 am »
I can't think of any other way to do this. Originally placing everything in packages as containers, as described and recommended in the UML standard, should have allowed all to be observable and the preferred way to migrate data btw the tools.

The only other option would be a custom script to read the RSA content and port into EA.

Did you try to import an EMX output file from Software Architect or are you trying to import System Architect content?

General Board / Re: Rational Software Architect Import??
« on: January 06, 2014, 05:40:34 am »
There is an issue with the XMI supported in System Architect and that precludes importing using that means into SA from EA. We have developed a bridge btw SA and EA for bi-directional data movement and this might also help. If you send me a private msg in the forum we can discuss this and other possible ways.

We are business partners with Sparx and IBM and know both products very well, and including other Rational products. We work with customers regularly who use products from Sparx and IBM in their organizations.

Just as FYI - Rational Software Architect is known as RSA and Rational System Architect is known as SA. Yes confusing....we know and so does IBM!  ;D

You can do this via an emx file extension. Export from RSA into emx format and then import into Sparx. This may not be the ideal way but  it will work.

Do you use XMI to import this content?

General Board / Re: UML versus ArchiMate

Just FYI - a whitepaper is being reviewed for publication from The Open Group that describes how to use UML with Archimate - should be out in the next 30 to 45 days if not sooner. :)

General Board / Re: What is difference between Model and Baseline?
« on: May 18, 2013, 08:30:53 am »
A baseline is a collection of information, model objects and references, that have been locked to prevent changes and is often used as a review point for stakeholders. It can be used for the purpose of comparing changes to / from other branches, like comparing a next generation branch to the baseline to determine how it will impact the baseline objects. It can also be used as a way to incrementally develop an architecture over time by facilitating merging of multiple branches into the baseline to create the next "version" of the architecture.

Bugs and Issues / Re: Subversion. Does it work? Is it supported?
« on: October 17, 2014, 11:34:20 pm »
Your points are well taken.

I'm not sure of your exact situation but we have many customers using SVN for their VC. There are many nuances that have to be addressed but it is quite possible for use with EA even for large project sizes. We have a set of best practices to support this approach.

You may get some help with this WP for a Sparx BP:

We also help clients use multiple eap files for large projects and have best practices for doing so. If you would like to discuss how we might help you with a strategy for your specific deployment, plz PM me and I'll be glad to connect.

Have you followed the steps in the WAN Optimizer Uzer Guide, and looked at the log file after the install?
Have you filed this with Tech Support?

Bugs and Issues / Re: Compare with Control Version and SVN
« on: December 07, 2013, 07:18:11 am »
Qwerty makes a great point, this should not be done by the architect during reviews, but he should be guided by the chng request completion done by the developer which would document what chngs were made to the model. The architect can use the previous version to identify prior structure and verify that the new model meets the initial chg request requirements.

If you follow this best practice, you can use branch and merge techniques for the chngs and then modify your production version once you verify it can be done safely after you complete the final quality testing.
