Suggestions and Requests / Implement Parameter Sets
« on: March 21, 2006, 08:59:49 pm »
In Section 12.3.43, on page 431, figures 291 & 292, the OMG UML 2 Superstructure shows how to diagram Parameter Sets on Activity diagrams.  They appear as object nodes nested within a Parameter Set box.  These may be on both the input and output side of the activity.

I would like to see this feature implemented in EA.

How about a "mouse-in" event related display?

Yes! Now I see...

I'm having the same problem.

Add my vote to this.

I think Sparks needs to review their logic on how they handle pins and object nodes on activity diagrams.  I have another post on this subject in this discussion area.

When I control-drag an Activity onto the diagram and select "as invocation of Activity (Action)", the CallBehaviorAction is created, but without input or output pins corresponding to the Activity Parameters. One must add these manually.

I'm having trouble reproducing your problem.  Can you be more specific on what you are doing?  For example:
  • From where are you dragging the activity? (toolbox or project tree)
  • Are you using a left or right button drag?
  • Are you dragging onto an activity diagram?
  • Where are you seeing the option "as invocation of Activity (Action)"?
  • Which version of EA?
  • etc.

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Refactoring Function

Exactly!

In addition to using EA in my consulting practice (where the diagrams are various views on the same project), I often use an EA project either for my lectures or as a repository for figures in several (disjoint) monographs.

In an EA project supporting my monographs and lectures, the individual diagrams do not necessarily relate to the same physical project.  Making changes in one diagram should not have side effects in another.

I need control of the domain of the change.

This might be a nice feature, but if implemented, I'd like the propagation to be optional or optionally constrained to the current package or view.

I posted a bug report.  We'll see what happens.

Suggestions and Requests / Resizing reflexive associations
« on: November 16, 2005, 08:56:29 pm »
When diagramming a reflexive association (both association ends connect to the same class) I get a line with two 90 degree bends in it.  The U shape thus drawn is too short to allow proper placement of all the information needed (Link name, mulitplicities, role name, property strings, etc.).  It does not appear that there is any way to elongate the U to make room for the added information.

Can this capability be provided?

I wonder how beep is modeled in UML  ;D

On second thought, there is a problem with IE6.  EA diagrams created on 8.5 x 14 paper are clipped when printed through IE6.

I have no problem with IE6, but Mozilla does not provide a print function.  I had to save the picture and print it with other software.

Paolo;
No offence taken.  I'm a semi-retired IT developer/manager who has been in the profession since 1968.  I've always been on the bleeding edge of technology and now I'm moving into teaching advanced Comp Sci topics at the local college for the fun of it.  I'm also demonstrating that the best way to learn is to teach.  ;D

Yes, I am new to EA as I'm evaluating it for use in my classes.  It is a good tool for that, but it does need some polishing and I'll need to have a really good grip on its use in various application design circumstances.

I appreciate all the help you've given me...

Agreed, but if it isn't in the UML spec, I doubt that we will get it.  We have it on parts, I'd be happy to get it on connectors.  Then I can complete a paper I'm developing on composite classes.

Think I'll check with my friends in the Rose community to see how property strings and derived elements are handled there...

Cheers

I've sent a formal request via the 'Request a Feature' function on their web site.

Care to add your voice to this request?  ;D

Suggestions and Requests / isDerived and Property String Support
« on: August 25, 2005, 08:37:35 pm »
Please provide support for Property Strings as defined in the OMG UML 2.0 specification.  subsets, redefined, union, ordered, bag, sequence ought to be predefined.  These strings ought to appear on the diagrams within curley braces and have their own controls on the property forms.

Similarly, please provide support for IsDerived=true attributes on associations and elsewhere as specified in the UML spec.

Per the EA help file, tagged values are for information not directly supported in UML and therefore should not be used for Property Strings.

As EA users begin to take advantage of the new Composition Model in UML 2, the derived flag and property strings will become more important.
