General Board / Re: Relationship between Activity(BPMN) and UseCas
« on: September 18, 2013, 06:40:07 am »
We relate BPMN Activities to Use Cases also. The Use Cases in turn have scenarios which can be turned into Activity Diagrams containing UML Activities.

The idea of an Activity as a child of a Use Case may be referring to this case were (at least in Sparx with the auto generated Activity diagrams) the Activities by default live as children of the Use Case.

I think everyone has to be clear if they are referring to BPMN Activity or UML Activity.

We also create separate diagrams to map the BPMN Activities to Use Cases rather than clutter up the BPMN process diagram. The diagram itself is not very useful, it is just a way to easily create the relationships. Once the relationships frpm BPMN Activity to Use Case are defined, we walk these relationships when we produce documentation.

Write a script to walk the Activity models and create Use Case models?

or create a Model Transformation to do the same?

I don't think there is any built in way to do this.

...On the reports themselves we model the input parameters, and the layout of the report....

Geert

Geert, could you please elaborate on how you model a report layout? We have been struggling with this.

Take a look at an ebook called Mastering Archimate by Gerben Wierda. It is all about Archimate modeling but he describes how to model what he calls Secondary and Tertiary Architectures.

Secondary Architecture in this book = Development Architecture

It may give you some ideas. (page 84 section 12.3)

There's a LayoutDiagram method in the project interface. You might use that as a start.

Thanks for the pointer!

I have used scripts to at least create the diagram and add the items to the diagram. In my case I had many packages with a small number of items in each, so I at least wanted to automate that much.

I still had to manually go into each diagram and resize/relayout so the solution was not ideal.

You can mix VC and security at your wish. However, I still recommend a central repository and RLtE in favor of VC.

RLtE = ???

Also read the short Sparx paper titled "Version Control Best Practises for Enterprise Architect"

A version control system like SVN is used instead of the baseline mechanism.

Search for an ebook called "Mastering Archimate", by Gerben Wierda.

He recommends always adding the type in square brackets to every element name. I like this style, especially for an audience that doesn't read archimate modesl every day, which is probably most of our audience.

His models look great and I agree they are more easily understood with the reminders of what you are looking at, but I still hate the idea of adding that fluff to the actual name in the model.

It's a trade off.

General Board / V9 under Crossover on mac?
« on: June 18, 2011, 01:34:58 am »
I have been using the trial V8 on a mac under Crossover. I am now ready to purchase, but I now see that V9 is available.

Is there (or will there be) support for V9 under Crossover?

If yes, what is the best way to upgrade and purchase?

Bugs and Issues / Re: Sparx hangs drawing relationships
« on: March 12, 2014, 04:14:36 am »
The problem seems to be when the elements do not have the same parent.

My workaround is to temporarily place the elements under the same parent, connect them, and put them back where they belong.

Do you believe this has been fixed in a version later than v 10.0.1008?

Your question about element location in the tree got me thinking, and just tried a single quick test.

I have two elements that I cannot connect, and when I place them both under the same parent in the tree, I can connect them. When I return them to their original locations I cannot connect them.

I will try some more variations.

EDIT: Well that may be a clue, but with other elements it does not solve the problem, even with the same parent it hangs

I should also add that when this happens Sparx cpu usage goes to 100%

We are using V 10.0.1008

The Diagram type is a custom MDG diagram based on BPMN2.0 Process Diagram.

The Elements are a variety, BPMN Activities, Events, and Gateways. (Also having the same issue with a BPMN Pool on another diagram)

The relationships are BPMN Sequence Flows.

The elements do live in a mix of locations in the project browser tree.
