General Board / Diagram Filters
« on: May 25, 2010, 07:28:53 pm »
Hi Guys

Trying to figure out how Diagram Filters works. I understand the simple tests, and can get them to work. I think Diagram Filters could potentially be useful. However, playing around with the "One Of" test for a Diagram Filter - I may have stumbled over my own ignorance or maybe even a minor bug?

Demo of what I've done - and can't get to work - at:

Hopefully the pictures will explain and show what I'm doing ... and trying to do ... †:)

General Board / Notes disappear when laptop sleeps?
« on: December 03, 2009, 11:50:06 am »
I was talking to a customer this morning - making changes to a "Note" on a diagram - did not click off the Note object or do a "save". Laptop goes to sleep when I close the lid on the laptop. I find that when I walk back to my desk and open the lid, my changes to the "Note" element in a diagram have disappeared.

Is this possible? I have not been able to reproduce this happening, however. Wondering what I could have done to lose the text I was entering ... anyone else ever had this happen to them?

General Board / Controlling Element Width
« on: August 20, 2009, 03:59:58 pm »
I note that when choosing to display the notes compartment on elements, and then adding, say, a long text string (example: a URL) in the notes section - the width of the the element appears to be determined by the length of the text in the notes section.

Is it possible that we can have the ability to specify the exact maximum width of elements in a future version of EA?

Or is there a different / better way to control the width of elements that I don't know about? :)

General Board / How to batch export XMI multiple packages?
« on: July 18, 2009, 01:44:42 pm »
We have 11 root packages in our project.

To XMI export the entire project I have to select each package on a one-by-one basis and serially do the XMI export for each package. Takes too long.

Ideally, I'd like to shift click all 11 packages and have them all XMI exported to eleven XMI files that have the same name as the package.

Does anyone know how to do this?

General Board / "Unknown Transition Source or Target" XMI Import
« on: May 09, 2009, 12:48:48 pm »

While doing an XMI import, "Error: Unknown transition source or target" pops up, but the import seems to complete anyway.

Using multiple packages on SQL Server repository, client is EA 7.5.

Anything to be worried about?

I'm guessing this may be due to people having packages checked out - but that's just a guess.

General Board / Component "Indicator" ?
« on: March 26, 2009, 12:20:57 pm »
Have been thinking about how best to accomplish this, but I reckon the smart guys out there have already come up with the best way of doing it.

I have Component diagrams that are well-populated with Component. Lots of those little suckers.

For many Comonents, I have added "defined information" - in the Notes compartment- but in others I have yet to add this information.

As a reminder to myself that I need to populate this information - how could I set the appearance of a Component with a small, subtle marker, so that I can see from the diagram that this information is missing?

Happy if it's a manual thing - something I set when the information is added - or set when the information is missing - perhaps a little diagonal mark in the corner of the Component shape?

Don't want to use colours, because we're already using colours for something else.

I've heard of SmartShapes, but unless someone can show me a fully worked example of how that whole thing works - I probably won't be able to find the time to do the customisation to get there.

Any ideas?

Thanks - Jon

General Board / Automation Interface - Architecture?
« on: March 14, 2009, 12:42:56 pm »
I think I know what the response to this next question is going to be, but I'll try anyway.

Is there a diagram that shows me what the physical / technical architecture of the EA automation interface looks like?

I was (incorrectly, as it turns out) thinking that it was server-based - or could interface directly to the SQL Server data base - but apparently (according to a peer who knows more than I do about these things) it can only interface through the EA client application to the SQL Server data base.

Then I thought - why isn't there a Sparx diagram that shows me the physical architecture / configuration of the Automation Interface?

I would then be able to see examples of the variety of physical objects that can be created by people who wish to use the Automation Interface. I could see the supporting technologies used to interact with the client (ODBC? Inline SQL statements?).

And how the client talks to the SQL Server data base. ODBC? Can stored procedures be written to be invoked on the server by the EA client?

Perhaps this diagram exists in an obvious place and I've just been negligent in overlooking it?

General Board / 7.5 costs?
« on: February 12, 2009, 03:53:22 pm »

Does anyone know what the upgrade cost will be for 7.5?

If I have a corporate version and want to move up to the full Ultimate version of 7.5, what am I up for?

Will the upgrade decision be taken when my support times out?

General Board / Creating Domain Models or LBRMs in EA
« on: January 21, 2009, 07:56:52 am »
Context here is 'using EA to support corporate enterprise architecture'

I know a lot of you out there would be using EA to create domain models or logical business reference models (LBRM).

Background: For some time now we have been using EA to represent all of the customer organisation's business systems - using Component diagrams - and 'information flow' connectors for the interfaces of various types between the business systems. We keep a defined list of text information about each business system (and each interface) in the Notes section of each element. We have defined a limited number of Tagged Values for these elements via a UML Profile to capture information that is amenable to structured data, using a defined enum range of values for each Tagged Value.

We're now starting to think how we could best create a high level domain model or LBRM in a way that allows us to later associate business systems and business processes and information objects back to LBRM components. And do the usual search / find / list / report / categorise tricks.

Any suggestions as to how best to do this in EA? Any anti-patterns to avoid?

I can de-identify an LBRM that we've got at the moment, to show what we're doing, and provide a link to it on my website if anyone's interested. (De-identify = names of objects on the diagram will be pixelated or anonymised so that no one can recognise the client or any information about the client. Or even the client's business domain ... )

General Board / My UML Profile - Can't Get it to Work
« on: January 12, 2009, 06:56:48 pm »
My New Year's resolution is to get this UML Profile working.

I've loaded pictures and a narrative of what I've done, the sequence of steps, the results, and an explanation of what I'm attempting to do, here:

http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~jmcleod/UML-Profile/index.html

If anyone can spot the obvious flaw in what should a relatively simple process (in theory) - I'd be very grateful.

Thanks - Jon

General Board / EA on 64-bit Vista?
« on: January 11, 2009, 05:41:14 pm »
Getting ready to do a major laptop upgrade and was thinking of loading the 64-bit version of Vista Home Ultimate. Just to get the extra 1GB out of the 4GB RAM it comes with.

Checking the web suggests that it may now be time to consider going 64-bit.

But as it's mainly a platform for EA these days, thought I'd check to see if anyone is running EA on x64?

Checked the forum to see if anyone had asked the same question recently, but didn't find anything.

General Board / Question about UML Profile
« on: November 26, 2008, 09:57:30 am »
Bear with me. I'm a 'UML Profile' newbie here.

I'm trying to work through the Sparx website instructions on how to create a UML Profile.

I refer to:

http://www.sparxsystems.com/uml_tool_guide/sdk_for_enterprise_architect/createprofile.html

Says "1. Open or create the appropriate Class diagram".

Does it HAVE to be a Class diagram? Can it be a Component diagram?

I want to define 'my version' of components that have tagged values, some of which will have enum pull down lists that allow the user to select one value.

At point 5, it says "Click on the OK button. Enterprise Architect creates a package with the stereotype ęprofile> and with a child diagram."

Surely, I'm thinking, it would only do this if one has the 'Automatically Add New Diagrams' check box ticked, in the 'New Model Package' dialog window, right? (I generally leave this box unticked)

Any suggestions welcome. I'm struggling a bit trying to understand the Sparx documentation on UML Profiles...

Thanks
Jon

General Board / Hyperlink in Element Notes ?
« on: November 20, 2008, 10:09:23 pm »
Doesn't look like it's possible to put a hyperlink in the Notes section of an element.

I know that I can add a hyperlink to the diagram.

Customer wants to be able to link from the Notes to their corporate intranet.

Is there any way to do this?

General Board / Question About Tagged Values
« on: November 13, 2008, 03:52:07 pm »
I'm using the Component diagram to model business systems, and the 'information flow' arrow to model interfaces between systems. †Very simple modelling technique, but it's valid UML and very useful for the customer.

I've been capturing information in the Notes section about each system (example: "Criticality to Business" which is a good candidate for an enum, with values of "CRITICAL", "IMPORTANT", etc.

However, the discussion in the EA User Guide as to how to use tagged values is a bit short on detail.

Can anyone point me to a good quick tutorial that would show me how it's done? I have been able to define a tagged value for a single object (Component) but don't know how to define a tagged value that I can associate with all objects of a specific type (ie, Component).

Any help appreciated!
