General Board / Re: hiding pakcage content
« on: December 02, 2004, 11:39:58 am »
G'day,

You might want to consider creating some extra packages/diagrams and using the option "Show Linked Items in Package" (checkout "Diagram Behavior" in EA's help index).

As an example, setup a "Main" package that includes two elements.  Then, setup a "View into Main" package that has a diagram onto which you've dragged and dropped one of those elements above as a simple link.

Finally, create a diagram in some other package and drag/drop onto that diagram the packages "Main" and "View into Main".  That might give you the effect you're looking for.

Thanks Thomas.

So I can treat a partition the same way as I would treat any "object".  I can classify it, set properties for it, link it to other elements, etc.

Would it be worth requesting a feature to show or not show a partition (or an object) using rectangle versus partition notation?  The reason I ask is that I would hate duplicating objects as partitions (duplicate elements) in my documentation (properties, links, etc. etc.).

G'day,

Can anyone give a very short and clear example of why/when one would set any properties for a partition?

General Board / Partitions or Swimlanes ???

G'day folks,

After having searched the forum, still don't know what the advantages of one over the other.

I've read that partitions are semantically better.  Can anyone elaborate?

My immediate observations on partitions:
  • pain to align and size
  • clutter up the project browser

Oh no, not a born again newbie!

EA Guru sounds good.

Thomas has been an awesome contributor, so give the man what he wants.

General Board / Where are "Problem Types" used?
« on: November 24, 2004, 08:22:39 am »
G'day folks,

Under the Configuration | Maintenance submenu, there exists a choice (Problems...) to maintain problem types.

Where are problem types used?  I can't find any dialog that provides the list of available problem types.

Thanks in advance, much appreciated.

G'day Mike,

Whenever I install a new build of EA, I always un-install the old one (Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs).

After that, I install the new build in the same directory as the old one.  The key is always found.

All that said, I still keep the key tucked away in a safe place, in case I ever need it.

Sorry, can't help with the visual layouts ... I've always used the default one.

G'day,

What do you mean by "the registration key was deleted?"

We uninstalled EA4.1, then installed 4.5 without needing to re-enter the key.

PhilR,

Thank you very very much ... those are excellent links!

Here are a couple of links that may be of interest:

http://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/GROUPS/SOFTWARE/OO/asp/ref/ref.html

http://www.rspa.com/ (The SE Resources are pretty good).

For a VERY VERY SIMPLISTIC process, take a look at GRAPPLE in Sams "Teach Yourself UML in 24 Hours".  It's not a bad quick start ... but probably no more than that.

G'day,

Did you include the characters "{" and "}" in your serial number?

G'day g'day,

I'm with Thomas on the voting mechanism thing.

Maybe something like:

  • Is urgent
  • Would be nice to have
  • Would not be useful

G'day,

I'd much prefer one forum so that I don't have to go into each one to see what's new, what I can skip, and so on and so forth.

That said, it would only work well IF new topics could be marked with at least one "category" (multiple categories would be nice) so that we could filter out messages and search for certain categories.

G'day folks,

If this (ability to place and multiple copies of an element on a diagram) does get added as a feature, please make it an optional feature (always allow, or never allow)!

I use the same technique as Thomas on the odd occasion that it's needed.

Search this forum to see how many folks switched from Rose to EA, and check their reasons.

Then, go to the Rose forum and see how many folks switched from Rose to EA, and again check their reasons.

Maybe some with experience can confirm this:  if it's easy to convert from EA to Rose, then go with EA first and switch if it doesn't work out.

I find the support from the folks at Sparx and the support in these forums too good to pass up for any other product.
