General Board / v8 release notes and cut/copy/paste
« on: February 19, 2010, 12:15:47 am »
The v8 release notes make very interesting reading,  the following items certainly caught my eye

"Added support for copying and pasting a Package or Element(s) within a model. "

"Cut & Paste support added to diagrams"

General Board / "Update Styles" to load styles from norm
« on: October 09, 2009, 12:58:04 am »
Having now found out how to update Normal.rtf - very straightforward when you know how (isn't everything?),  I have now used the "Updates Styles" option in the RTF editor to refresh styles from normal.rtf into existing templates following the guidelines from the help

"Enterprise Architect supports a system template file: ‘Normal.rtf’.
This allows users to define and edit default styles and numbering,
etc. Any styles modified in this file will reflect in newly created
templates. Existing templates can also be updated to reflect
changes to the Normal.rtf, using a feature in the RTF editor: File |
     Update Styles"

This definitely loads styles that don't exist in your template from Normal.rtf,  but it doesn't seem to update existing styles e.g. Normal, Heading 1 etc..  that might already be in your template.
Anyone else seen this problem ?    I have this horrible feeling I may have to recreate all my templates.

General Board / Moving rtf templates between projects
« on: November 18, 2009, 09:48:16 pm »
EA supports exporting the rtf templates to xml,  although it's all or nothing, you don't seem to be able to export a single template.

However you can manually edit the xml to leave the one "datarow" you want.   My question however is to with the import process.

The help says  "When you import data into Enterprise Architect, the system merges the incoming data with the existing data. If a record already exists it is updated to the new values. If the record does not exist, Enterprise Architect adds a new record. Enterprise Architect never deletes records."

But what constitutes the "key" that determines whether a record exists or not.  The xml has

<Column name="DocID" value="{99D388E4-28D7-4e06-A0BE-1FCDF7AD4B19}"/>
<Column name="DocName" value="Name of template"/>

Is it both or just DocID,  if just DocID the chances must be low of different templates between projects having the same id,  but that's possible.

In terms of building confidence in the process, anyone tried this with success ?
thanks

General Board / Including external diagrams in rtf document
« on: November 18, 2009, 02:38:34 am »
Hello.   Can anyone recommend the best approach to the following :

- I am reporting on a particular branch in the project browser, as usual iterating though packages/elements.  That's all fine
- I want to include a diagram from another branch that is outside the active branch I'm reporting on.

What do you suggest ?
thanks

General Board / RTF generator - paper size in virtual documents
« on: October 28, 2009, 05:03:11 am »
Just FYI that after running a few tests I believe I have established that the paper size (A4, legal, letter etc.)  for a virtual document is determined by the last model document defined in the master document.

General Board / Normal.rtf and the RTF editor
« on: October 07, 2009, 10:34:12 pm »
In the EA help it says

"At version 7.5 of Enterprise Architect, the Normal.rtf template is included as a system template. This provides user-editable defaults of styles, numbering and other base formats.

Any styles modified in Normal.rtf reflect in newly created templates. The template file is stored with the Enterprise Architect system directory (in C:\Program Files\Sparx Systems\EA\DocTemplates).

Use the RTF Style Template Editor to open and modify the template, but ensure there is no body text when saved. "

This is good stuff, but that last sentence is confusing me.   I've checked Normal.rtf definitely exists in the location specified in the help, but I can find no "Open file" dialogue in the RTF editor to be able to open Normal.rtf to edit it.    All I can see is modify an existing template (but Normal.rtf is not listed) or create a new template.   Does anyone know what I am missing ?

thanks

General Board / Master Documents and (Model) Document re-use
« on: September 29, 2009, 01:18:11 am »
I think I may be missing something here.

What I would like to do is include a model document, let's say a "Project Background" section into multiple master documents in the spirit of define it once and use it multiple times.

However I don't see to be able to achieve this because the model documents for a master document are contained in the master document "package".  I can get my first model document Project Background to appear in my second master document definition - if I copy as a simple link and have "Show linked items in package" ticked,  but I can't reorder the sections of the second Master Document because the link isn't shown in the Project Browser.

What am I missing ?
thanks

General Board / Hierarchy options on show diagram as element list
« on: July 22, 2009, 09:03:50 pm »
The options "Showed nested package content" and "Show hierarchy" are greyed out and unavailable on any diagram that I show as an element list - does anyone know why this is the case ?   Could it be because the models were created before 7.5 846 was released ?

thanks

General Board / Requirements properties..
« on: July 10, 2009, 02:39:34 am »
Does anyone know why a requirement element does not have a "Links" tab ?   The hierarchy window will show the links but it would be useful to have this in the properties dialogue too.

EA UI ?

General Board / Hierarchy window - output options
« on: July 09, 2009, 10:15:55 pm »
Does anyone know how to report on/output the details that appear in the hierarchy window for a set of elements ?

Or should this be a feature request ?

thanks

General Board / Absolute and relative (hyper)links
« on: June 29, 2009, 10:39:49 pm »
Does anyone know if it is possible to specify a relative link in the Hyperlink dialogue ?   I've tried but failed.

It looks as though absolute references/addresses are used, but this doesn't help when generating HTML output that you might want to zip up and distribute for review.

Any ideas ?
thanks

General Board / HTML reporting - linked files
« on: June 24, 2009, 03:15:01 am »
It looks as though any linked files added through the "Files" tab on an element are not copied into the folder structure created when generating the html (although this is done for the logo file if you specify one).   The initial html works with a reference outside of the folder sructure,  but this approach means that these links are lost if you lift the output folder structure and deliver it somewhere else.

Interestingly the folder structure created does have a "files" folder within it, but it is empty in my case.

So,
1) is this a bug or a feature ?
2) anyone have a workaround ?

thanks
