Hi all,
Having very serious issues with EA 11 and RTF document generation. There is an earlier thread on this, but there's no resolution.
- EA crashes during generation. No error message, just terminates.
- EA crashes during template editing - sometimes simply from selecting a bit of text and hitting Ctrl-C.
- I've even observed bit rot, where a template that was working suddenly stops working, after making non-template changes to the MDG Technology and regenerating the XML file.
My templates were originally written in EA 10 (some in EA 9). Does anyone have any magic recipe for fixing these and making sure they don't break again?
Cheers,
/Uffe

Is it that Mickeysoft security update (BSOD threads here)?

No, the existing thread is http://www.sparxsystems.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1398768589.
It's EA that crashes, not Windows.
I'm on 1007, btw.

I haven't seen anything like that.
Have you sent in a bug report with a sample template/model?

Dear Simon, Uffe,
the following problem appears within the RTF generation:
"It just terminates".
The failure is mostly the wrong file location, unaccessible file priviledges or a reference problem towards the template.
It is not impacted by the used template (own template or sparx template) not the file location or the repository.
It is allways conducted by a windows update or a new installation and is appearing since EA11. The direct circumstance is NOT completly clear.
You may look into bug report number: 14058329
My experience with these failures:
11.06 crashes -> 11.07 working
...
windows update
11.07 crashes ->11.12 is working
...
Currently it is still working
The oddness: On the same PC with another windows user it is working correctly while others fail.
Best regards
Stefan

Hello,
No, I haven't sent a bug report yet.
We've just upgraded here and in my pre-upgrade tests, everything worked fine. But after the upgrade rolled out, crashes have been reported by several users and I've noticed the other weird behavior when making changes to the templates.
But just to clarify: there are no known compatibility issues with RTF templates from EA 10 to EA 11, is that correct?

Dear Uffe,
I haven't experienced any template compatibility issues. Maybe you want to try EA 11.12 on one of the failing users.

Have you tried doing an integrity check? Just a thought.

We've noticed similar behavior (EA crashes upon RTF generation or resulting document is incomplete).
The one is reproducible on large packages (hundreds of elements, about 2k pages in document)
The problem was in leaking GDI objects in EA.exe process: it reached the limit of 10.000 (Windows-defined per-process limit) and generation stopped. We solved the problem by increasing MaxGDIObjects limit in Windows registry.

Ah, the GDI issue all over again. That was solved for me once I upgraded my windows to 64bit.
As for RTF, I abandoned that a long time ago. I point everyone towards eaDocX (http://www.eadocx.com/)

Geert, sorry, but the case is reproducible both on 32 and 64 bit systems. And the only way to fix it was changing that max GDI object limit.
eaDocx is a nice tool, but at a time there is no opportunity to migrate to it.
-
Max, what build of EA are you using? If it's current are you able to share a model that allows us to reproduce the issue?
-
Simon,
First we reproduced it under 8.0.858, but it is still reproducible under 11.1.1111 and 11.1.1112
I'll try to share the repository later over priority support page, but I have to obfuscate the data. The obfuscating tool from Sparx, I've seen lately in some topic, works fine but does nothing with linked documents.

The RTF generator is not perfect, but certainly way better then a couple of years ago. Since the addition of the cover page and the template fragments, I'm able to generate usable documents for commercial purposes. Worth trying!
