Is there an in-depth text book for BPMN with Sparx?
-
As far as I know: no.
-
Thanks :-/ :-)

There is a very large book written by the guys at LieberLieber (aka Sparx Central Europe) which is available in German and English. It has LOTS of detail, so isn't for the newbie user, but it very comprehensive.
see http://www.sparxsystems.eu/resources/ea-training-book/?L=2.
Don't be put of by the title: "Project Management with EA" - it has nothing to do with PM!
-
Oh - and I forgot Peter's excellent 50 EA tricks: https://leanpub.com/entarch
-
Thanks, Ian. But that book doesn't seem to address BPMN (?)

If there was a book about BPMN with Enterprise Architect, it would have become very out of date with the release of EA 11.1
-
Why is that?
If there was a book about BPMN with Enterprise Architect, it would have become very out of date with the release of EA 11.1

I guess that a book written for EA10 would be rather outdated with V11 (I guess because things are handled differently in the UI).

Version 11.1 was a huge update for BPMN functionality in Enterprise Architect. It's not even about the GUI, it's the difference between naturally producing a nice drawing and naturally producing a working, valid model. The profile was changed in places to allow this, and EA is doing more for modellers.
BPMN export functionality saw lots of work, aiming for for full compliance. BPMN import was added.
Almost everything BPMN specific changed. In my opinion for the better. That's why I say a book about BPMN for EA 10 would be out of date now.

I've just upgraded to 11.1 and I have to say that BPMN now seems very broken! The performance on a local EAP is now far worse than I used to get when logging onto a server in London over a WAN from Sydney. It has become almost unusable unfortunately. >:(

I guess in contrast to Good Job Sparx!!!! (http://www.sparxsystems.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1414647656). The poster sits Down Under, so his bits don't have to travel so far ;D

I realise that major changes have been made to BPMN in EA version 11.1
These changes are having major impacts on my clients who have built up extensive BPMN models in EA 10
This is particular acute in the area of re-usability of Pools an Activities, they can no longer model in they way they are used too
I cannot see these major changes reflected in the on-line help (unless I am missing something) and the printed user guide (the pdf) is still stuck in 9.3
It is all very well making changes for the benefit of the modeller, but not much use if the modeller cannot use these changes as they are not documented!
I think we need a Sparx Webinar on the new BPMN in EA 11.1 ASAP
Cheers

I think we need a Sparx Webinar on the new BPMN in EA 11.1 ASAP
I'm sure it will come. The developers did a demo to the guys who do the webinars recently.
In the mean time:
- Creating a Pool now creates a collaboration to contain it (if there isn't already one. If the diagram isn't nested under a process it will also be moved into the collaboration along with the activities on the diagram. (ie. Unless you're explicitly inside a process, it helps to start on a valid, reusable collaboration)
- Context menu in project browser for diagram under collaboration now allows encapsulating the implicit process. (main one for the collaboration or the one corresponding to the pool)
- Once encapsulated, any activities on a diagram are automatically moved to the appropriate process. (Project browser structure changed)
- Properties dialogs for BPMN types provide a simplified way of changing the type (which is often two or more tagged values) and filter out irrelevant tags to the type selected. (Note: Version 12 improves this further by showing it on the same page as the name and notes)
- Drag and drop from the project browser can be used to set various BPMN properties (But I'm not involved enough to remember which ones)
