Title: Promotion of SO Enterprise-Architect tag
Post by: g.makulik on October 08, 2014, 05:42:40 am
Hi all,

I attended the EA User Group Europe meeting in Munich today, and noticed a number of complaints about the low quality of this forum:

Well, since the Sparx Experts and moderators are around here, this is what will keep up the usefulness and quality of this forum. Though the technical base (YaBB), probably isn't the best choice nowadays.

I'd like to invite everyone, who's frustrated by this forum, to have a look at the

StackExchange SO [enterprise-architect tag] (http://stackoverflow.com/tags/enterprise-architect/info)

The community there is growing well, and you'll recognize a number of members who are around here also.

Best regards,
Günther

Too bad. There's also a group on Google and one on LinkedIn. So should I monitor all those groups? It's a real shame that Sparx neglects its forum. Its a real USP but they don't see it.

IMHO the currently best engine for generating a useful and searchable Q&A format is StackExchange. LinkedIn or Google Groups aren't significantly better than this YaBB billboard.

Günther

Well I don't think it's quite fair to say that Sparx neglect this forum -- it is a user forum after all, which they host for free, and their representatives spend quite a bit of time answering questions here.

The forum is a place to discuss EA-related things, but it isn't an official way to get in touch with Sparx support, nor a way to send feature requests, and those (usually new users) who don't make that distinction, which is printed in bold on the forum's front page, tend to get frustrated.

That said, I do agree that for pure Q&A Stack Exchange is a better platform, and I do encourage others to go there and post questions. I certainly answer far more questions on SO than I do on this forum.

SO is mainly about programming, so "the best Stack Overflow questions have a bit of source code in them," but questions regarding "software tools commonly used by programmers" are also accepted. There is a UML tag as well for more generic notation type questions. (Quotes from http://stackoverflow.com/help/on-topic.)

So come on down! The Chimp and I are ready to receive. :)

/Uffe

Please! Don't get me wrong about this point.
I didn't really mean to say that, but just that the mechanics of this forum regarding search, and result sorting, don't work comparingly well here vs. StackExchange.

Of course there are a lot of valuable answers to be found here, buried deep under YaBB(a) the Hutt's (http://www.sparxsystems.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?action=search) grave.

@Uffe We'll probably meet over (down [under?])  there! I'll promise to have a daily view in the tag queue (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/enterprise-architect) from now on.

Best regards,
Günther

PS.: Yes, I'm just bumping here. And I may do frequently in the future  ;D!

I must admit, after trying out StackOverflow for a few days, that it is much more rewarding to answer questions there then it is on this forum.

Their system of reputation, voting, privileges etc... really works.

Haha. I once left this forum because of this lousy (newly introduced) voting system which had put me from a top poster to an average poster. I was not amused.

How can I display new questions related to EA in SO? Clicking the EA tag only shows all questions regardless whether they were already answered or not.

For me the view for Questions tagged with enterprise-architect (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/enterprise-architect?sort=newest&pageSize=30) looks like this:

These lists the very latest questions that were tagged with [enterprise-architect].
As you see there are also other views available, e.g. the 'unanswered' may be interesting for you.

As for your previous post:

Yes, you'll also have to start out reputation new there. Which could get you kind of frustration.
But as experienced you are, I think you should gain rep quickly, answering questions tagged with [enterprise-architect] and/or [uml].

I'd really appreciate so see you around there!

I have also created a new lounge chat-room (http://chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/63250/enterprise-architect-lounge) on SO.

Everyone is invited to discuss with the Sparx Systems Forum refugees there!

That shouldn't be too hard. I earned about 400 in a week.

Geert

@Geert Well, to be fair. I've been pushing you a bit, to pick up these bounty rep points with a lost account 8-) ...

Best regards,
Günther

@qwerty
We could find some agreement on sharing rep, e.g. via bounty worth questions you find. It doesn't debt on $ you give me, you may find other forms.

Besides all of that particular stuff: I will take care of Questions and Answers on SO carrying the [entrprise-architect] tag. I'll certainly upvote and encourage Questions or Answers given by users, that are disclosed, and have a high reputation on this forum already.
Though you certainly should meet the basic policies (http://stackoverflow.com/help) for SE/StackOverflow  posts.

If you'd like to have some loose discussion, upon a question or answer post, or what you could post under the tag, please use the mentioned chat-room (http://chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/63250/enterprise-architect-loungel).

Cool thing to have a sticky topic here BTW. _YaBB(a)_  just confirmed and told me, it's easy to do so, and it's not really further rated as being seen pushed (bumped), or in search.

True thanks for that, but I got about as much rep from answering new questions as well.

Of course, and you deserved so. I didn't mean to diminish your values.
It was just to explain to @qwerty, what's going on.

As I said: Geert did not leave me much chances to answer a question ;-) Eventually I'll stroll by an see if there's a bone for me.

After using SO for a while actively - that is not only looking for answers in the past but also writing answers myself - I can say: thanks! Now that I can vote for Q/A it feels much better. A bit like in the past days of the EA forum where you got your merits quite (too) easily. While this forum buries its answers rather securely, SO offers a good way to query. And you're feeling involved. Just dreaming: seeing the haystack here thrown over to SO so people can find answers more easily.

 • Advanced search is too slow, limited.
 • Sorting of results by relevance is bad.
 • Obscure user voting system.
 • ...

With EA 12 coming along with chrome plated grease nipples and double reverse
overhead twin cam door handles  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZSSYqHYjxY) (this of course is an Aussie reference (http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/songs/t/thenewcastlesong.shtml)),
perhaps it's time this forum too was given a makeover (read total software replacement) and we too got "twin overhead foxtails"

Didn't you know that if you improve one thing you have to take it from another one?
