Title: Add choose to "type" drop-dowlist of a requirement
Post by: Monsieur on December 04, 2014, 01:40:49 am
Hello dear everyone,

Using the MDG tech :
I have created a new stereotype called "Need" which extends requirement and another one called "TechnicalRequirement"

By default those stereotype are displayed in the drop-down list "type" in the properties of each element (which is supposedly a enumeration list). Although those 2 stereotypes are not part of the drop-down list and if I choose any other choice there is no way to select again my old stereotype.
I can still go back by typing my stereotype in the drop-down list.

so how add those stereotype to this drop-down list.

ps: Why can we type in a drop-down list????????  Weird feature isn't it?

I'm not entirely sure which drop-down list you're talking about, or how to reproduce the behavior of a profile stereotype not being included. (Have you imported the profile/technology or just modeled it?)

As for being able to type into it as well. Since its creation EA has allowed users to create stereotypes in an ad-hoc manner. This is why you can type into it. And the functionality to type into it is common enough that it's usually called a combo box.

No. That's not uncommon (though I don't remember how such fields are called). The drop down is just convenience to allow the user to enter pre-defined values. Plus he's able to enter own values.

Commonly known as a "Combobox" as in a Combination of a text box and a dropdown box.

I have created my MDG tech and imported it. Looks all pretty much functionnal (new diagram, toolbox, objects,...)
As I said in my first post, New custom object "Need" that extends <<metaclass>>requirement. Once my MDG imported.
I created my new "Need" the right click > Properties...
I then have the same UI than a requirement object + stereotype need.
AND THERE IT IS, the "Type :" field (which is pretty much the stereotype field)

As you see, no "Need" value in the combo box as it where just before.

Well that's not encouraging good pratices (define what you really need to use and do not do live actions that are not define in a datamodel )

You can turn off the ability to create stereotypes.
Enable security and remove the option for groups that you do not want to have that ability. Leave it on for admin and set a password.

thank you Gary but I still need a way to add my customs stereotype to the dropdown list before I block the ability to create stereotype.

If you choose the ellipsis button right to the stereotype input field: can you chooses your MDG? Are your stereotypes present?

Wow q, no idea which button your talking to, care to past a screen? thank you for your answer

If you are talking about Object creation, yes I have my types in the Type selection once I am in the good toolset
http://snag.gy/Fql6b.jpg
But that's not supposed to be related with the Type in the property UI

Ps: besoin = need (the alias are in french since I customize for a French company)

Oh. EAUI... In the properties (dbl-click element) you find that "..." button right to the stereotype. Actually I almost never use the New Element icon. But definitely the missing ellipsis button is worth a bug report.

q.

P.S. I would not have guessed you're French  ;D

P.P.S.: This window has a Select Toolbox. Does that show your MDG?

Can you show me that button and explain what purpose does it have?

Yes it is, not sure it is perfect though, I'd love to exchange piece of advice about it since I'm not familiar with EA good practicices  ;D

When you open the dialog you should be able to select your MDG. It then should show the available stereotypes for that element.

Look for Stereotype Selector in the Help index, and then look at some of the topics around that topic.

I just upgraded from EA9.3 to EA11.1

Still no stereotype selector as you can confirm it on that picture
(http://snag.gy/MYr7t.jpg)

I don't have any clue of how to make this feature work. Does not sparx (or any one) have a list of a few checks to do?

(Maybe i got an uncheck box in settings or something?)

Requirements show the stereotype in the Type field. It also behaves a bit different. EAUI that is....

Dear Q,
Can you show me your UI so i can see the difference?
In advance, thank you.

I'll ask if IT department can install EA from scratch on a corpo VM and a free corpo VM and see if the problem dosn't come from upgrading EA instead of uninstall/install and see if the corpo environment is responsible for that weird UI.

You see the stereotypes as being set in the internal table for a requirement and a class. The requirement's stereotype is shown in the Type field. Further EA lets you select the preset values (Functional, etc.). So this is a typical example of EAUI.

Yeah but shoulsn't it be a (...) button?
I don't get what i should or shouldn't have that's why a screenshot is welcome.

Plus the help says you can check multiple stereotypes?????
http://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/10/standard_uml_models/stereotype_picker.html
How to get that feature??
I only got a dropdown list, not a list with checkboxes!

As I said: EAUI (EA Unique Interface). Send a feature request if you like. Or poke your finger in your nose if that's more pleasant  ;D

q.

Sorry, i wasn't familiar with EAUI (i thought it was for User Interface and not Unique!).

I am a bit lost:

-So you say that my interface is not the "normal" interface of enterprise architect???

-Where do i send a feature request? Are you talking about the "Suggestions and Requests" part of the Forum?

All i want is to get back to a classic interface and the New button, the (...) button and all these awsome features!  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Well, this unnormal appearance is what EA shows everyone. This likely has historic roots and never has been normalized. I refer to the "Feature Request" link bottom right of this page. Don't put much hope in using this. We're seeing these Requirements properties since more than 12 years.

What you could do is to create a Requirement based on the meta-class Class instead of Requirement.

If i understood right, every one has this requirement interface (with no button (...) etc) and that should be corrected (if sparx decide to do it someday...)

Q, as always, you are right.
The Class interface is more "normal".
I maybe try to make my requirement based on the Class metaclass IF i can find a way to hide some of the properties (Like template, Advances or Rules!) and get to an "alike" interface of a requirement.

Thank you for giving some of your time to the community (well, to me in that case  ;) )

Unfortunately the properties window(s) can not be modified, though it has been asked quite many times. You "could" write your own properties dialogue. But that's definitely not trivial and likely overkill. You could however  react on changes in properties with an add-in listening to OnContextMenuChanged (or how it's called).

Version 12 is now using the same properties dialog for Requirements and other elements.

Hello all,

Still discovering the stereotype selector and i have a few questions:

When you click on the "..." button, a frame open and allow you to select the stereotype BUT you can check multiple boxes HOWEVER once you click ok you only have one stereotype.

Why is there checkboxes and can we make multiple choice if in the end it all end with the first choice of your list (in the weird order of EA).
 :o :-? :-? ::)

If you choose multiple they are actually all selected, but you only see one in the properties dialog.
Check the same element on a diagram and you will see the different stereotypes.

As a (EAUI) side note: enter some stereotypes separated by comma (and no space!)  in the stereotype field. Now when you open the ...-dialog you see that each of them is checked.

Yes, I saw that, but that method is a bit messy, I don't want some one "killing" the model with a mistake (likely a miss-spell or a "s" or whatever)

Just a new question, when I click the "..." button, I don't see my customised profile from my MDG, is that normal? (I got access to those stereotype from the toolbox I made although) :-X

Strange, normally I see my profile in the list. Is your profile enabled in the settings?

But to add injury to insult: The Profile field is a combo-box?!?!  :o I never noticed that before (using V11). Why should one be able to type free text in the profile name?

Well, I think Sparx don't like the idea of a closed meta model and a framed evolution. He is likely happy to let the user do whatever he want, giving the admin the worst to back up every problem [/joke-nojoke]

OR, he thinks every user is clever?? :o

don't know wich idea is the more foulish  :P
