Hi,
The default model that's supplied by EA is a bit of a dog's breakfast. It doesn't necessarily fit anyone's particular need - but it is enough to get you going and in more or less the right direction. So the preceding is only a vague criticism - I can't think of a better answer myself. :D
I haven't yet gone to the trouble of creating a custom default model for my needs. But even when I do, the subject of this post will need to be addressed. Not every view of every model will be populated all the time. Within each view, the same applies to packages and other subordinate structures.
I think it would be a good idea to add highlighting to the project browser if there is a populated item beneath the view or package.
This could be done in the same way as Microsoft Outlook (Express) - where unread messages in a folder cause the folder to be highlighted.
Thus, while you just had hierarchies of packages, the names would be normal. Once you added a class, the names would be bolded. Or maybe the - and [-] symbols might be bolded instead. :o
Next, when baselining and differences could be used to (say colour) the text - meaning somewhere below this thing is an element that is different from the baseline. 8)
I think this would greatly improve ease of use of the browser.
Thoughts anyone?

In terms of empty views/packages, all I do is open the entire structure to all levels.
As I use a standard template I have found it is pretty easy to quickly grok (?) which ones are empty.
So as a work around, have patience and determine your optimum structure. Once you get the imprint in your brain, I think you'll see that this is not as bad as it sounds.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a tree viewer? ???

BTW I'm old enough to remember grokking - when it first came out... :-*

Paolo,
I had the same problem in the beginning until I read http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=general;action=display;num=1033756093;start=2#2
My current template looks like Jorge's any it works really fine :)
