hej,
we are maintaining a system overview diagram (component diagram) which includes around 150 components and really lots of connectors (information flows) between them.
* on moving and selecting elements on this diagram it reacts extremly slow (e.g. selecting an element takes up to 3 seconds)
* we already tried moving the stuff from our RDBMS based repository to a local eap file => did not improve anything
* we are running the thing on a dual core machine with sufficient ram (2gb) - so this should not be the issue
=> does anyone have some ideas, feedback, similar experiences about BIG diagrams ?

Which kind of repository are you using?

hej,
we use a mssql based ea repository - but as i have already stated - this cannot be the source of the problem, as we already exported this one big diagram into a local eap file and checked that - but it did not change anything in respect of slowliness ;-)
* are there any switches to turn on for large diagrams ?
* any hint would be appreciated !

Of course EAP would not be faster. But how are you connected to the repos. Is it a local SQL Server Express or do you use a WAN connection?

we did the check with the eap file locally on the same machine where ea is installed.
* ok - i assume as local eap is based on something like an access like db this could be slower
* our mssql installation is on local network, connected via 1gbit
=> the local cpu where the diagram is opened is consuming nearly 100% of resources for the ea process

Remember that MSDE - the 2000 version of free SQL Server - slows down above a certain user count or database size.
If you are using SQL Server Express (the 2005 version) this should not be the issue.

EA is unfortunately very chatty with the DB. I once had (by accident) a huge diagram with lots of connectors. EA was veeeeeery slow in drawing it. You likely have to get a bigger machine :-/ Sorry.

Please file a bug report (attach the relevant XMI) so we can verify what the source of the slow behavior is.
