Is there a recommended mobile application to open an .eap file so people can read their models on a mobile device offline?
-
What mobile device are you talking about IPhone/Pad, Android, a Windows Notebook?

Sorry, both Iphone/iPad and Android

Hi Tom,
This sounds essentially impossible to me.
The .eap file contains a Microsoft Jet database, so first you'd need Jet database drivers for those platforms, and I'm not at all sure there's an app for that.
Then, if you somehow manage to clear that hurdle, there aren't any diagram images stored in the database: the EA client renders them on the go. So all you get from looking at the database is the various tables (t_package, t_object, t_attribute, t_connector, t_......), you don't get anything that looks like UML.
The simplest way to read (not update) models in this situation would be to dump the models to HTML beforehand and point the tablet's browser to that.
If EA had a fully-fledged OSLC implementation, that would work for both reading and updating models from a browser, but the current offering is more of a proof-of-concept than anything else, and I don't expect any massive development efforts in that area any time soon.

The only feasible currently seems to be to export to HTML and read that on your mobile browser.

Or get a projector to project onto the ceiling or wall... ;)

Why do they want to? On a phone (<5.5" screen)?
A tablet (>9") might be be conceivable...
I'm intrigued...

Hello.
Your post mentions 'read', and for that I support the html option.
But if you are also looking to maintain a model... for a previous client we had to analyse certain features and contents of remote sites associated with their operations. We deployed EA to a 10" laptop and used it to record various types & enumerations.
That worked fine because the interaction was with the project browser and 'properties' windows. I wouldn't want to do anything more complex on such a small screen - the workspace simply isn't big enough.

Sorry, can I get a clarification here -- you did this on a device running Android or iOS?
The OP is not about screen size. It's about software platform.

[I work with Tom]
What we are exploring are creative options of how we can export our .eap projects to a tablet for display purposes only (we are trying to keep our options flexible as to which OS and vendor). We definitely do not intend to perform any editing, a tablet would be an unwieldy platform. But, we would like to have a portable version of our projects that our leaders could carry with them, and easily display portions to our clients via tablet screen (if 1:1) or projector. I hope this helps.
Exporting to HTML is a an option we will test (thanks Geert), but if anyone has other ideas .. we welcome your feedback.

I think the two available options are html or documents based on templates in PDF/Work.

Just as a side note: I am rather sceptic about most r/o concepts. Yes, sometimes you might need to have the model for reference. But the true value is the ability to actively model the model(!). However, doing this interactively in a group does not work well. Instead a print of relevant parts pinned besides a white board as basis for group discussions is what worked best for me.
