Suggestions and Requests / Code engineering support for WSDL, IDL
« on: May 04, 2004, 08:27:07 am »
I've had very good luck reverse engineering C++ code samples, and the results are great.

But there is some code I need to implement to support an interface defined in WSDL.  Is there any existing/planned capability to process WSDL interface definition?  Or CORBA IDL?

Great!  I thought "Copy to Clipboard" meant to just copy the diagram graphically, for pasting into Word or Powerpoint.

I've had very good results, by the way, including my diagrams within proposals and other documents using Ctrl-A to select everything in the diagram, Ctrl-C to copy, and then Paste'ing into Word (usually using Word's Paste-Special, and pasting as a Word Picture) - this is much quicker than exporting to a GIF or JPEG, and the results are very clear.

Suggestions and Requests / Ability to clone a diagram

I am working on some sequence diagrams and it would be handy to be able to clone the diagrams and modify them.

  • In one case, I wanted to split a diagram.  Instead of trying to copy/paste objects and messages, it would be easier to just clone the diagram, and delete the messages before or after the split.

  • In another case, I wanted to show various exception paths.  They are fairly complicated, so I wanted to use different diagrams.  But I have to repeat all of the surrounding messages.

  • Another time (this is not just for sequence diagrams), I wanted to diagram some design alternatives, but I had to repeat all of the stuff that didn't change.

Being able to clone a diagram would simplify these tasks, without requiring a lot of "cut/paste" magic.

Just installed 3.60 Build 640, and diagram copy and paste is provided now.  (I still need to reconcile some object create vs. link issues, but it's a start.)

Also (although I am not sure this is strictly valid UML), I would like to show stereotypes on messages, to highlight those that are RPC's, or CORBA, or whatever.  This way, it marks those messages as "<<CORBA>>sendMessage()", which really helps when trying to find where interaction/integration frailties lie.

I am doing some sequence diagrams for an integration project, and have some of the same comments, especially with respect to adding notes.

Also, it is very difficult to make a copy of a diagram.  I am trying to present several integration alternatives to my customer, and it is a pain to reproduce the base interactions every time.  I'd like to follow this scenario:
1. Create sequence diagram reflecting current code
2. Copy to second diagram, rename diagram, and insert proposed changes.
3. Repeat step 2, showing different changes for different integration alternatives.

I guess when you copy a diagram, you would need to copy the objects as links - I don't think you'd want to proliferate them just for a copied diagram.

(Also, UNDO is very unpredictable.)
