General Board / Time for a new EA sample model?
« on: March 31, 2009, 06:58:53 am »
Just a thought really, but isn't a long overdue that we have an updated EA sample model that outlines the new features and perhaps provide a model of something else but Online Book Store.
I have used a sample model from version 6 in all my demos to users and colleagues which I had to significantly enhance (read: bolt in or on the new packages/diagrams) to outline, in example, new BPMN modeling features, brainstorming, and to name a few.
We are at the version 7.5 now and although I see few additions to sample model it still does not reflect the true power of this otherwise very good tool.
Also, the base EA file is still based on Access 97 which, from my perspective at least, is an unsupported MS tool. Perhaps moving it to a newer version would not be that bad. I helped a few businesses to adopt EA for modeling and their use of Access is at this point the only way and so is mining of the data in the database as well creating reports.
Nevertheless, my kudos to Sparx team for job well done with EA.

D!

General Board / MDG Technology for Zachman Framework
« on: September 28, 2007, 05:07:48 pm »
Can anyone let me know where I can find the MDG Technology for Zachman Framework? It seams that Sparx has a very nice demonstration of its usage within EA under Product Demonstration section. However, I cannot find this MDG anywhere at the site. I would very much like to use it to demonstrate to my company division that is currently evaluating wider usage of EA.
I appreciate the help.

General Board / BPMN - pools and lanes always show stereotypes
« on: August 20, 2007, 05:29:35 am »
Hi everyone,

I started using EA's BPMN abilities to model a very complex business process that involves several lanes and few pools. Right now I am having a trouble with readability of the model because along with pool and lane names, the stereotype of <<pool>>, <<lane>> also appears and I have no means of making it disappear like with other elements.
I tried going into properties of the diagram and checking off Show Element Stereotypes and this works for all other elements except for pools and lanes. The only way I found to remove these is to remove the stereotype itself and set them to blank but then EA transforms both to ActivityPartions as oppose to pools and lanes which doesn't work for me.
I would appreciate any help in resolving this.

Bugs and Issues / Propagating column (attribute) changes
« on: July 11, 2008, 01:21:12 pm »
Hi,

I have a data model with quite a few tables (classes) and of course relationships between them. This model has been reverse-engineered from an existing SQL Server schema. As I am documenting table and column definition I am expecting that changes to columns participating in any constraints, say foreign key constraints in this example, are cascaded (propagated) to all tables where this particular column is used. However, those changes are not applied to other tables where the column is also used - even though EA properly identifies that the column is used elsewhere and prompts to propagate changes.
More specifically I am expecting that following properties of a foreign key column will be cascaded (of course EA should still prompt whether to do so - this is a correct behaviour):
1. Notes - I use this property to document column definition and this is essential for documentation purpose as my organization is using EA as repository of information.
2. Column Name - this is a mandatory behaviour for me for logical data modeling (PIM).

I hope this can be addressed in the next build. At the same time, if there is something at the settings level within EA that can resolve this, and that I am missing, I would appreciate someone's guidance.
Regards,

DBax
