Suggestions and Requests / RTF Filters/Conditionals
« on: September 06, 2006, 10:26:18 am »
We need more filter options other than include or exclude.

Would like the ability to filter elements for inclusion or exclusion, etc.. by equal to a value, <, or > a value.

Would also like some sort of conditional statements in the RTF template so formatting of the output could be done (i.e.   If stereotype = XXXX then output this line or paragraph, Else output this line or paragraph  ENDIF.)

We need a way to use conditional statments to control what gets included or excluded in the RTF document and also conditional statements that can be used to control the formatting of the output.

What do we use a modeling tool for?

I would venture to say to visually model the requirements, analysis, and the design of an application or system. We do this because a visual representation not subjected to personal preferences of semantics, and format as textual documents are. Words have different meaning to everyone and represent different visions of what is being stated. While a visual representation reduces or eliminates the various visual means by more accurately presenting what the author intended.

With that said our software process no longer creates textual use cases. Rather we create activity diagrams for all use cases. We then generate the textual use cases from the activity diagrams. This gives us a standardized look to the use cases, which also allows for standardizing the level of detail and content in the use cases. These generated use cases are what we have the Business sign off on.

Everyone else in IT now uses the model for requirements and basis the downstream UML artifacts on the activity diagrams in the model.

I have been trying to implement this methodology of activity diagrams and generate use cases as a report of the model at SRP where EA is the modeling tool we wish to use. I have successfully done this with Rose and SoDA but am having difficult time with the report generator in EA.

I have read a lot of forum requests to SPARX about various reporting needs and must say they all fall in line with what I need to create use case reports from activity diagrams. Almost all the responses are from developers wondering why we are asking to have filtering of selected elements, not repeating of headings like PRECONDTION when you have more than one of them, etc…

I really like EA much better than ROSE but need this reporting ability beefed up so I can get enterprise wide adoption of EA and my methodology at SRP.

Who can help me get this resolved or are there plans or some way I can use say crystal reports to go against the EA tables in the database?

Suggestions and Requests / Make "View Code" work on partial class?
« on: April 12, 2006, 08:43:10 pm »
I posted the message below on the general board, where another user confirmed that he had the same problem in C# and suggested that I post it here as a suggestion.  I guess the suggestion is to force EA to look in the file linked to the class we are trying to view.
------------------------------------------------------------------
I am using EA 6.1.789 and MDG Integration for VS2005.

Most of the UserControls I build in VB.NET have auto-generated partial classes in files named something like MyControl.Designer.vb.  The code I write goes into files named MyControl.vb.  These show up as two different classes of the same name in EA 6.1.789.

When I click "View Code" on the context menu in EA it works fine if I am trying to view the code for the EA class generated from MyControl.Designer.vb.   But if I try to "View Code" for the EA class generated from MyControl.vb (which is almost always what I want to do), EA takes me to the editor for  MyControl.Designer.vb in VS anyway.  If I try to "View Code" for a specific operation in the MyControl.vb class -- one that doesn't exist in MyControl.Designer.vb -- EA tells me it can't find it.

I have checked the file names in the class properties and they point to the correct files.  Any idea what I am doing wrong here?  I'd really like to be able to go directly to the code like I used to.

General Board / Is undo checkout not working?
« on: November 01, 2006, 07:14:34 am »
I checkout a package in EA (6.5.7.99 build 799). I'm using SQL Server and Visual Source Save.

I then add any element from the toolbox (new element in project browser tree as well) to a diagram in the package just checked out. I do nothing else and decide I do not want changes I made to the package and execute the Undo Checkout for the package.

The element gets removed from the diagram but in the project browser tree the element is still there. I would think that since this was newly added since package was checked out that the element would be deleted as well.

Is this a bug or should I not expect the newly added element in the package to be removed as part of the undo checkout?

General Board / Changing element appearance on a diagram
« on: October 06, 2006, 01:13:46 pm »
Here is my problem I need help with.

We have multiple packages in the project, and multiple use cases in each package.
We create a use case diagram and drag various use case to the diagram from these various other packages, and have the diagram properties set to "highlight foreign objects". This is working great and shows what package the use case is located in, on the various diagrams the use case is located on. The relationships are equated to that use case correctly.

We have a need for reviewers of the generated documentation that includes a particular use case diagram, an easy means to identify which of the use case(s) in the diagram are not to be reviewed because they are not changing and are only in the diagram for context purposes. We thought that using a different color for the use case background would be the best way to go about this.

The problem is that when we change the appearance of the use case (background color) on the diagram, it changes the use case background color on every diagram in the model rather than just the diagram it was changed on. We were thinking that the appearance of that use case element was tied to the diagram and not the element.

We have tried creating an alternate image to use as a use case for our context purposes, but the name of the use case now appears below the use case on the diagram rather than in the use case element on the diagram. We could live with this but now the "highlight foreign objects" option does not work for the element with the alternate image. It appears that the "highlight foreign objects" is part of the displayed element and that when an alternate image is used the "from package name" is also overlayed.

We have also tried creating a custom stereotype with a base class of use case, and changed the background color. When we change the stereotype for the use case on the diagram to our custome use case stereotype, the color does change and the "highlight foreign objects" is displayed, but the same issue of all the diagrams that have that use case element on them changes to the custom stereotype background is now encountered.

Anyone have any other ideas for us to try, or is it a bug with changing the appearance of an element on a diagram being tied to the element rather than the diagram, or is it a bug with the use of an alternate image overlaying the highlight foreign objects text for that element?

General Board / Relationship Matrix and Entity Attributes
« on: August 03, 2006, 01:31:50 pm »
Hi,

I have been creation screens in EA with GUI-elements and also adding the entity (class) attribute to the screens and have created a realization link from each attribute to the screen.

The problem comes in when I go to the relationship matrix and the source or target types do not have the class attributes in the list.

How do I get a list of screens an attribute is realized by ?

Thanks in advance. :'(

General Board / Generate Reports from Diagrams
« on: May 17, 2006, 02:51:49 pm »
Has anyone or how do I generate a RTF document bases on a diagram instead of at a package level?

I have a couple of diagrams in a package and only want a report that lists the elements of a specific diagram not all the elements in the package.

General Board / Deleted User in Security
« on: February 22, 2006, 01:04:54 am »
Hello

I have some how managed to delete the admin user from the seucurity settings. The admin user was the only user set up to access a project. Now when I try to open the project the password box appears - It fails with the correct password, fails with no password and fails with no details.

How can I access the project again or add the admin user back so I can log in to the project?

Thanks
