General Board / Charting and Tagged Values
« on: August 23, 2021, 09:50:48 pm »
Just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

I've been playing around with the charting capabilities - heat maps, pie charts etc..  -  but it seems that the reporting out of the box is limited to the core element attributes.  In other words using tags and their values is not supported unless you drop in to your own SQL queries?  Is that right?

General Board / Event Registry
« on: May 13, 2020, 11:40:12 pm »
Hello, does anyone have any experience/advice regarding using Sparx EA as an event registry (attributes, versions, usage etc..) where the events are Kafka events/streams?

Thanks

General Board / Reporting Traceability
« on: March 07, 2019, 10:49:09 pm »

This topic has come up before - how do you get the very useful information reported via the traceability window in to a report?   I just did a search and there have been a few threads on this over the years, usually voicing frustration that it's not supported out of the box with a standard template.

Well I've been away, and was just wondering whether there has been any progress with this?  Or does someone have an example template to achieve it?

Thanks

Anyone any ideas why EA Lite hasn't been updated even though version 14 of EA has now been released for 6+ weeks?

Could it be that when EA Lite goes to version 14, it implies Sparx thinks that version is stable?

General Board / Re-using standard shapescripts
« on: June 01, 2017, 03:29:17 am »

I would like to re-use the standard shape that is rendered for a value chain element.   May be a silly question, but is that possible?  In other words can I access the shapescript code for a value chain element and then apply it to a different element via the UML types dialogue ?

Bugs and Issues / Connector: Aggregation. Notation lost
« on: May 19, 2017, 04:21:26 am »
So I've been using this connector a lot over the last couple of weeks and have not had a problem with the diamond notation at one end of the connector.  Until today, when exactly the same connector has lost the diamond and I can't get it back.

It's disappeared in some cases on some diagrams for existing connectors but not across the board,  however all new connectors are just a plain line at both ends - no diamond at all.  I am using the exact same method to create these that I have used without problems in the last couple of weeks.

Anyone come across this?   And is there a fix?

General Board / Webinars
« on: February 01, 2017, 04:57:31 am »

I find these very useful, but what's happened?   They are supposed to be "monthly product interactive webinars",  however the last one was in November 2016 and it's now Feb 2017.

Will there be any more?

Bugs and Issues / BPMN Template Elements don't honour the element size
« on: November 25, 2016, 04:31:25 am »
Version 13.  I have set the style attributes on a BPMN activity element in a template package and also resized the element.   When a new BPMN activity is added to a diagram,  EA picks up the style OK, but the default old size of the element seems to dominate.   I see a quick flash where the revised template element dimensions appear, but they immediately disappear to be replaced with the default much smaller size.   I assume this is because BPMN's origins in EA is as an MDG addin, although it is now delivered as standard by default with EA.

Would you call this a bug?  Is it even fixable?

General Board / Standardising Element Appearance
« on: November 22, 2016, 01:31:00 am »
This may have been raised before, not sure.

If I use the "Project Template Package" approach provided in EA I can set my own appearance for elements (font colour, size, border, background etc..) without using the 'default appearance' option, and this works fine.  EA notices the custom appearance in the template section and applies that style to a new element of the relevant type that I add to a diagram.   The problem is that this seems to be a one time operation.   By that I mean, if I re-use (link to) that element on a different diagram, a completely different appearance is applied, which I assume must be the default for the element.   I can of course also set the "default appearance" of the element, essentially repeating the changes made to customise the element in the template package, but why do I have to do this twice? Is this a bug?

Would it be reasonable to expect that on re-use of an element, either
1) EA also applies the style it finds in the template package - if it looked that is, I have a feeling the lookup on the template package only happens for new elements.   In short shouldn't the style I specify in the template package override any default appearance ?
2) When an element is defined in a template package and its appearance changed, shouldn't then its 'default appearance' automatically be updated to reflect those changes?

thanks

The Eclipse (and Visual Studio) Link MDGs are now standard as part of the Professional edition and above and appear on the code tab in version 13.   But how do you get them to work?

The help still seems to refer to the time when this was purchased separately as follows:

=================
The MDG Link for Eclipse is available for download from the MDG Link for Eclipse page on the Sparx Systems Website, once it has been downloaded the program will be in the .zip format. To install the MDG Link for Eclipse use the following instructions:

 1. Download the EAEclipse.zip file from the Sparx Systems Website.
 2. Ensure that you meet the System Requirements and have the appropriate versions of Enterprise Architect and Eclipse 3.0 installed on your system.
 3. Remove any previous org.sparx.mdg.eclipse_1.nn directory from the Eclipse Plugins directory (if they exist).
 4. Unzip the EAEclipse.zip file into a suitable directory (i.e. c:\EAEclipse) and copy then org.sparx.mdg.eclipse_1.nn directory into the Eclipse Plugins folder where your install of Eclipse is located (i.e. C:\eclipse\plugins).
 5. Install the MDG Link for Eclipse component by double clicking on the EAEclipse.exe Installer executable.
 6. Read the licensing agreement and if you accept the terms click on the next button.
 7. Read the Readme information, and then click on the next button.
 8. Enter the User name and the Organization names into the appropriate fields before proceeding by clicking the next button. (Optionally determine the users who have access this program by choosing between the all users or only registering users).
 9. Choose an installation path for the program, and then click the next button.

Note: The .nn in the org.sparx.mdg.eclipse_1.nn is indicative of the current version number of the MDG Link for Eclipse.
===========

Step 4 seems critical.  But what do you do when the Eclipse link is already pre-installed?   I can't find it in the Sparx MDGTEchnologies folder  (C:\Program Files (x86)\Sparx Systems\EA\MDGTechnologies), so can't find the directory org.sparx.mdg.eclipse_1.nn

What's more when I have Eclipse running, if I click on the "View Eclipse Connections" option in EA, I get a blank panel plus the message  "Eclipse must be running to complete this action.  Launch Eclipse now?".   But if I click "Yes", I just get "Can't launch Eclipse".

Anyone any idea how to get this to work in EA 13?

Thanks

General Board / Reporting on instance classifiers
« on: October 05, 2016, 12:22:34 am »
I think I may have missed something here and so I'm probably asking a dumb question.  But, how can I report on instance classifiers?

In other words find all the instances of a classifier?   They don't seem to appear in the traceability window, relationships, insert related elements or anywhere...

General Board / Reusable Asset Service
« on: September 27, 2016, 10:05:59 pm »
The 'Reusable Asset Service'  looks as though it could be handy to support re-use and avoid duplication of architectural frameworks, model elements and structures, but has anyone used this for real?  If so, can you answer these questions:

1)  If I copy a reusable asset into my model, can that asset copy then be edited, essentially compromising the centralised original?
2)  If the central reusable asset is updated (updates will be few and intermittent but will happen) what is the process to update the previous version that has been copied into models elsewhere?   (I see in the help that I can compare my copy of the asset with the latest version in the asset server, but what do I do if I find differences?)
3)  if I create relationships from my model to the re-usable asset that I've copied, can I get a holistic view/report of where the re-usable asset is being applied/used or am I creating a mess because I can never reconcile where the copied re-usable asset is being used ?

thanks.

... global

From information from RoyC in a separate thread it has come to light that diagram filters only apply to the current user, i.e. if another user opens the model and looks at a diagram where you have a filter applied, they won't see it.

Together with the fact that the filters are global - i.e. once you've set a filter it applies to all diagrams you look at, it seems to me that the  functionality defined for diagram filters is fatally flawed.

I would definitely like to:
- apply a filter and have a diagram with the filter applied visible to other users.
Also, I'd like to:
- create a diagram and populate it,
- then clone it multiple times and highlight different specific parts of it on each clone using different filters
- have the HTML output reflect the set of diagrams and applied filters

In my view, this would be a very useful communication and education mechanism.
