Thanks! That is unfortunate, but at least I know that it's not me, but a lack in functionality. And do you know if an element can be unlinked from a pool?

2
Trying a different angle: Is it possible to somehow unlink elements from the pool they are in? Because I guess that the moved items within the pool are dragging the pool with them.

Dear Geert

I must be doing something wrong. I wish I could send you a demo picture here. Therefore I can only tell you that I set the pool to non-selectable and even with alt-drag it is moved for unknown reasons.

Best regards
Martin

Dear Geert

Thanks, but perhaps I was inprecise in my explaination. I am not selecting individual elements and try to move them, but I have a diagram with pools in it. And in these pools I have several items like tasks and and notes and so on. And when I then go to the context menu of each pool, mark it as non-selectable and then activate the sweeper tool, everything is moved including the non-selectable pools. This is confusing for me. Do you have a solution suggestion?

Best regards
Martin

A useful trick when working with diagrams that contain pools and lanes, is to set them to non-selectable (see context menu)

That way you can move around the contents all you want, without interfering with those pools and lanes

Geert

Dear Geert

I have to ask, if there is anything else I must do. I have made the pool not selectable and still they are moved around.

Best regards
Martin

That is true what Geert says. Some visio diagrams import quite well but a lot don't. So a fair amount of manual tidying up is required. I often use javascript to automate the tidying up. However not everything can be automated.

I hope that I will have such skills one day. Sounds good.

I am sorry that I bothered you. Under tools there is only the Script Library and the Javascript console. I do not see a menu entry "Scripting". Most probably it has been deactivated. Would fit with the rest.

In  the library both, new group and new script, are grayed out ...

You can use the internal scripting feature.

In the manual there are a few "hello world" type examples.

More complicated real-world stuff: https://github.com/GeertBellekens/Enterprise-Architect-VBScript-Library

Geert

Thanks Geert

I will also take a look at this.

Well, you can use anything. Personally I use Python for lots of reasons. But that's up to everyone's taste. WSH works (I used that once), Perl (ditto), Java (well, not used but I know that people use it). You can as well go with compiled code (whatever you wish should do).

If you need a guide to EA's API you can look into my Scripting book. I once wrote that after struggling with what Sparx provided.

q.

Thank you. Sounds good. If I could choose freely I would use Python. Where do I find that scripting book that you spoke off?

I would say it is part of moving away from visio. If you give access to it, people will keep using it.

Hi

I just wanted to ask if there is something similar to VBA in Office that can be used to write one's own modifications for EA? Is there a starting point iike a tutorial ("Dear beginners, macros/extensions/whatever are built in the following programming language and you can use the following example to render a hello world message" etc)?

Best regards

Thanks, but I have no permission to install another office suite. This is regulated by corporate IT governance.

One more thing is you need visio too otherwise the visio importer won't work.

To everyone: thanks for your advice.

But when I have to have visio for the importer to work then I won't need the importer anymore. I just need a way to get those old diagrams in an editable format. :(

Hello everyone

I am using EA 15.2.1559 and I want to import a Visio .vsdx diagram. I found this, but I am afraid that the website is i) describing a different version, because I see no extension menu and ii) that I do not have the permissions to install a new extension due to corporate IT restrictions.

Do you see an easy way to import vsdx diagrams?

Best regards
Martin

Cool, thanks for the advice. I will use that.
