Suggestions and Requests / Re: Linked documents - for diagrams?
« on: August 02, 2011, 10:30:53 am »
'Linked document' does not seem to be one of the types supported for hyperlinks, though you can link to a file. I had noticed that one of the 'Common' diagram objects is a linked document object, so I'm using that.

In either case, it seems like it would  (a) be more consistent to have it accessible on the context menu; and (b) not contribute to diagram clutter. Since I circulate a lot of diagrams as images, having little clickable boxes that lead to documents in the full client might frustrate the people I'm sending them to.

On the plus side, the current implementation allows one to create *multiple* documents for the diagram, and you see them right out in the open. So I suppose it's fine.

Please consider making it possible to create a linked document for a diagram.

I created a package and then created a linked document for that package. However, I do not see anything in the UI that indicates to me that the package has a linked document associated with it. I have quiet a few packages in my project, it would be useful to be able to identify which of them have associated linked documents.

General Board / Re: From Class model to Data model?

I hadn't; I am. That looks very promising.

General Board / From Class model to Data model?

Is there any way to generate a Data Model from a Class Model. We have a set of rules we use for our object relational mapping, so that given an class model, we can generate the supporting data model. However, in EA, I have to manually create the data model. I'm wondering if anybody has a way to take a class model diagram and derive a data model diagram from it.

Actually "Repair Project File" is the way to go once you get to the point where EA won't even open the file.

The problem with the progressive disclosure menu system is that you don't even know these tools exist until you go in through "Tools->Customize" to find out what's available that is not appearing in your menu configuration.

I was trying "Project -> Model Validation -> Validate selected" which sounds like it should do that same thing but didn't.

At any rate I was able to rebuild the model from an earlier version and recover the old file based on your tip. Thanks.

It would be really nice if EA could tolerate files on network shares with unreliable connectivity. That's not the first time that bit me.

I appear to have a corrupted EA project file.

There is one node in the model which I cannot open. when I try, it presents a Dialogue that says:

An error has occurred loading the requested project.
DAO.Database [ 3159 ]

Not a valid bookmark

... and the node does not expand.

When I try to Find a diagram node within that model node by name, it displays a message indicating

DAO.Recordset [3343]
Unrecognized database format
'path .... filename'

The good news was that after clicking the ok button, the node opened.

What was interesting about this model (perhaps) is that I was stored on a network drive, and I was connected to the drive remotely. EA crashed due to a network error (this happens to me a lot even with older versions, something you might consider fixing). I then reset the network folder to Windows "work offline" mode, and disconnected my VPN to force EA to work with the local copy. I worked on it for a bit, then this error started to appear.

guess it helps to read the fine print.  :-[

Ah. I had not found the standalone 32 bit ODBC admin utility, but it makes sense that it would be there. In addition to that, you need to install the 32 bit MySQL ODBC driver.

You might want to publish that information - ODBC connections on 64 bit Windows use the 32 bit ODBC engine and require installing the 32 bit versions of vendors ODBC drivers.

since its a development server, and theres only one user account with access to everything, I don't think its an account problem. Microsoft apps happily list the tables and run imports from them. EA does not. In fact, when you log ODBC calls you find there aren't any.

I'm wondering if EA is even detecting the MySQL driver. when I click the button in the dialogue that leads to creating a new connection, it presents a different list of ODBC drivers that the ODBC admin utility shows. This list does not include MySQL.

I'm pretty sure this is a 32 bit vs. 64 bit Windows problem. It all works as one would expect under Win 7 32 bit.

Trying to import DB schema from ODBC, under Tools -> Database engineering -> Import DB Schema from ODBC

If I choose my SQL Server data source it works.

If I choose myMySQL data source, after selecting the data source, EA displays a dialogue that says

"Unable to obtain table information".

I am able to import data from the MySQL DB into another application on my PC, so I'm sure the ODBC connection is set up correctly.

Has anybody seen/resolved this?

Bugs and Issues / Re: EA 8 (857) on Windows 7?

I see the problem when I'm connected to a Samsung Syncmaster 204t in 1600 x 1200 mode. I have not seen it in lower resolutions. Also, I had EA opened on the internal laptop display at the time. My other external monitor (home) is an LG that runs at 1600 x 1050. I think the model is L206.
The laptop is a lenovo T61 with a 1400 x 1050 display.

It turns out that the problem appears to be display related. I tried it at home connected to a relatively low resolution external monitor and it was fine. When I hooked up to my higher resolution external monitor at work, with the display mode set to extend the display across the two monitors, the problem occurred. When I reset the display to only display on the laptop display (display 1), the problem went away. By adjusting the video resolution on the external display, I can get it to work in ‘extends’ mode as well.

So I'm pretty convinced that it is not a Windows 7 or 64  bit problem, but may be a minor problem with certain display configurations.

Is anybody running EA 8 on 64 bit Windows 7? I tried, failed, and gave up. As soon as I drag a drawing element onto a page, EA hangs. I'm wondering if this is specific to my system or if others have encountered it.
