General Board / Floating License Server
« on: February 02, 2023, 02:02:38 pm »
Hi, does anyone know if the Floating Licence Server is supported on Windows 2022?

Can anyone explain how the Archimate Path and Communication Network elements Connector option in the Toolbox works. I can't get it to do anything.

It's useful for describing situations like firewall rules.  You have your source system (node), your destination system (node), you connect them with a path connector which you label with the port and/or protocol.

If anyone actually cares

In legal documents it meant "matter previously stated" (early 15c.), which in deeds or wills often was a description of a house or building, hence the extended meaning "house or building, with grounds" (1730).

That rings something. But sounds like an old EA version. I'm now (forced) on V15.2 and there is no Preferences menu any more :-/

q.

Ok Start | Preferences | Preferences | General | Author if you want to be precise :-)

I don't think I need a keyboard shortcut since window layout is rather stable over time. Anyhow, thanks for the links.

q.

I can never find the Portals menu item so I Google the keyboard shortcut :-)

Not Preferences | General | Author ?

This morning I've been doing a bit of network documentation.  I created an ArchiMate_Path object to describe a connection between two sites (ArchiMate_Facility).  I then went to create a ArchiMate Technology Object to represent the Circuit ID.  Hmm it's not on any tool box.  So I dropped on a class, and changed its stereotype to get a Technology Object (yah!).  However, I quickly discovered that I can not link it to anything.

I know objects aren't meant to to manifest directly in viewpoints, but network links are multi-layered.  One connection may be delivered by one or more underlying physical connections.  It was a very useful work around in previous versions of EA.

What about placing NOFOLLOW tags in the documentation of previous versions - this would make for a better search experience the Google corpus is awash with older versions.

I'm sure I remember suggesting that over the years :-)

I also believe that we the community could help Sparx in this. We have the expertise in using this tool in the wild; Sparx don't. They don't supply their own consultants, and internally, they only develop one piece of software so even if they do eat their own dog food it's only one flavour of one brand.
So we could actually help in prioritizing what improvements to make and what features to focus on for a given goal, eg reducing cost of adoption in mid-to-large organizations. But that would of course also require a higher level of community commitment from Sparx.

For the community to help Sparx, Sparx would have to listen to the community and make EA a piece of software that actually can be deployed and used in managed environments.  Like actually using %appdata% for something useful.  Currently if there is a bug/defect/weakness in a MDG/script/sample/pattern/dictionary you have to download a new version (hopeless if your software licensing is outsourced) and pay your IT services company to repackage and redeploy it.

I gave up developing a MDG that a few organisations were using as it was way too hard.  I should just be able stick the files for the MDG on Github and leave the rest to the end user.  However to make it work  have to know the ins and outs of how every the organisations (mis)manage their PC fleets.

Well, one is displaying compartments so is not an ArchiMate Node.

I don't think I'd use ArchiMate for that.  Probably just UML.

Can't you specify them in the MDG file any more?

From a quick read, if the profile management includes the users' registry hives and they're set to persistent you should be fine.  That would be fun to have a play with.

The old keystore service doesn't support IPv6, and is also non-encrypted which makes it less than ideal for working from home if there's no VPN.

The easiest solution to set-up would be a trial version of PCS, which has the added bonus of allowing users to browse the model using their web browser.

or if you actually have enough licences create one file based keystore per machine.

We use direct access from windows 10 to hook into the corporate network and access the licence server.

Does that work now?  Last time I tried that there were IP6 issues.
