General Board / Re: Generating Indexes
« on: July 24, 2002, 06:59:11 am »

To define an index as 'Clustered' bring up the operations window, select the index operation in question and then click on the 'Extended Properties' button.  This will allow you to define the index as Clustered, Unique and Ascending or Descending.

At the moment their is no way to define a column as a ROWGUIDCOL, however we have made a note of your request and try and include it into EA ASAP.

General Board / Re: Data Modeling Problems
« on: July 24, 2002, 07:21:28 am »

At the moment EA does not support the import of PostgreSQL database information through ODBC, and because each database product has different names for the same datatypes.  ie a 32 bit integer in one product is called 'int' and in another 'int32' or 'int2'.  The ODBC driver converts each datatype to generic name, that is why EA imports the wrong datatypes from your PostgreSQL database definition.

As I mentioned in another post, default values are not supported at the moment, however they are on our to-do list and we will be adding support for this in the future.

« on: July 24, 2002, 07:07:14 am »

At the moment EA does not support the ability to include initial values in the generated  DDL, we have made a note of your request and we will try and include this feature into EA ASAP.

Thanks for pointing this out, we will have this fixed in the next build > 498, we have just released build 498 tonite.

General Board / Re: Support for JSP??
« on: June 23, 2002, 06:59:25 am »

At the moment EA does not support importing JSP and the HTML option that Al has mentioned should not be shown in the list.  We were actually using for testing purposes, therefore if you select the HTML option it will not import anything.  Sorry for the confusion.

General Board / Re: Various elements not showing in the package br
« on: June 23, 2002, 07:12:41 am »

Sequence object that are created on a sequence diagram are not shown in the project browser by design, and it is not possible to reuse them again in another diagram.  However if you create an object in another type of diagram (like class diagram) you can use drag-drop or Ctrl drag-drop (depending on how you have set your 'Auto-Instance' flag on the Options- Diagram tab) into a sequence diagram and only the one physical object is used.

Hope this helps.

« on: June 23, 2002, 07:04:16 am »

The HTML option that you have found should not be shown in the list.  We were actually using for testing purposes (we are planning to release this in the future), therefore if you select HTML it will not import anything, thats why you are getting blank daigrams created.  Sorry for the confusion.  We will remove the option until the feature is fully released.

General Board / Re: Where is Problem Type used?
« on: June 23, 2002, 06:10:45 am »

The problem types reference information you are referring to is no longer used.  It was used in a very early version of EA and has remained as part of the application for historical reasons.  I think the best solution would be to hide this menu item so that you can no longer select it.

General Board / Re: Layout commands?
« on: June 10, 2002, 06:30:18 am »

At the moment it is possible to align mutlitple objects to either the right hand, left hand boarders or centres, the object that you bring the context menu on will be the reference object.

Hope this helps.

General Board / Re: Sequence Diagrams
« on: February 17, 2002, 04:43:01 am »

We have recently added this ability (build 465, due out in the next couple of days) to show location information for classes and objects, however sequence objects are not as easy, so we will be looking at including this into a future version.

Currently EA does not support numbering sequence messages, however we will take note of your request and see if we can include it in a future version.

Thanks for the suggestion, we are planning to introduce the type of documentation you are talking about in a future release, although at this stage there is no fixed release date.

General Board / Re: Licensing and Round trip engineering
« on: June 03, 2002, 08:03:26 am »

The details of EA licensing can be found at , however the basics are:  12 months of support and free upgrades are included in the purchase price.  After the initial 12 month period a renewal (for another 12 months support and upgrades) costs 1/3 of the current purchase price.  Regarding other backend databases at this stage we haven't finalised any plans however, we are thinking of creating another edition (say Corporate or Enterprise, although Enterprise Architect Enterprise Edition sounds confusing) which will have some additional features beyond what is included in the professional edition.  This new edition will have slightly higher price tag, although you will be able to upgrade by paying the difference.

At the moment the code and database forward and reverse engineering features work differently.  Code engineering allows you to select if you want to synchronize or overwrite existing files.   Database engineering (DDL) doesn't have this option because it doesn't parser information from the SQL script files, therefore it overwrites them each time you generate the DDL script.

Hope this answers your questions.

General Board / Re: HTML Output question
« on: June 03, 2002, 07:05:22 am »

At the moment this is not possible, although we very much consider the HTML documentation a work-in-progress and we plan to add more details and features over time.

General Board / Re: Do you support this functionality?
« on: May 27, 2002, 07:55:40 pm »

1) Support for other backend databases (like SQLServer, Oracle etc) is a high priority and we hope to have a version released that supports this within the next 3 to 4 months.

2) Currently EA does not support this, however we can see the usefulness of it so we will take it under advisement.

3) EA has a few ways of enabling mutil-user acces (all are in the evaluation version)
i. Simplest of all is place the project file *.eap on a shared network drive ... then one or more users simply open the file on the shared drive. This is OK for small workgroups .. say up to 10-15 users concurrently working in EA
ii. Use the Replication features to expand the number of users and geographic distribution ... users have their own copy of the project which they periodically synch with a Design Master project at a central location. You have to create and manage replicas to do this - check out the help file.
iii. Use the XMI import/export capability to create and manage controlled folders. Assign a folder to a user or local workgroup, then export the folder as XMI for import into a larger repository. Likewise, esport from the larger repository to XMI for import into smaller projects.
Check out the help file for some more information on these techniques. Each has its benefits and shortcomings, and you may decide to use a mix of all three to get the job done - or simply settle for a single technique.

4) We do not know what the maximum size of a project is - as no-one seems to have reached that point yet.

Below are the stats for a project that has a size of > 31MB

> 8000 elements
> 9000 connections
> 1300 diagrams
> 2000 use cases
> 12000 attributes
> 30000 operations

The load time on my Pentium 800 is still under 10 seconds and the time to load and save diagrams/elements etc. is not siginificantly changed from smaller models.

We have seen - and worked on a model with over 25MB of data - mainly in business process and use case models (around 250 UC, 250 Processes) - this was develoed over a year by 5 people using the model on a shared network drive. The documentation output ran to several thousand pages.

Hope this answers your questions.

We have uploaded the most recent help files earlier today, you can find links to them on the EA home page. .  Hope this helps.
