It'd be nice if you could filter by stereotype in the relationship matrix.

Another nice evolution of that would be to be able to filter by tagged value.

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Web Interface and\or Model API
« on: December 30, 2009, 02:06:12 am »
Official feature request submitted (text below):

Please add capabilities to support live rendering of EA models (as opposed to just supporting 'export to HTML'). Preferrably this would be in the form of web services (REST would be our preference) that include some kind of diagram rendering capability as well so that we could develop and brand the UI ourselves. EA Lite is nice, but it just isn't feasible to download , install, and configure EA Lite for the entire audience of the models we are building. The EA automation interface just isn't suited for this. Maybe an EA server product to compliment the EA client?

Suggestions and Requests / Web Interface and\or Model API
« on: December 03, 2009, 02:16:28 am »
We'd love to be able to expose our models dynamically (I.E., without having to export as web pages) through our web portal (which happens to be SharePoint-based). Either having that directly or having a better data surfacing interface (as opposed to going straight to the db tables or using the ea.exe as a COM object) would be nice. A REST service would be ideal, maybe complimented with a simple diagram rendering capability.

Very timely post. I am currently considering the creation of a 'UML Profile Profile' that would define stereotypes for creating a UML profile, then through the use of an add-in, generate an mdg XML file from a package creating using that profile. At some point, I'd be able to dog food the process. If Sparx has any plans to do something similar, though, I'd love to know about it, because my initial experimentation with this task is proving it to be non-trivial.

We also are wondering about this.

How about an option that if turned on, automatically creates a 'nesting' relationship between two entities if one entity is dropped inside another on a diagram that allows containment (deployment diagram for examplt)?

Suggestions and Requests / Hook into Authentication
« on: July 01, 2004, 02:18:21 pm »
A hook into the user authentication mechanism would be extremely useful.  Users have to remember enough passwords as it is, if we had a way to integrate the authentication with Active Directory, it'd be a huge plus.

Perhaps a stored procedure in the database?  It'd obviously need to be server-side -- client-side wouldn't be very safe.

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Actionscript 2.0 support

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant by 'integration.'  I thought you meant adding support to EA to allow EA to be automated with Actionscript, when EA already supports a very good standard mechanism for extension.

It sounds like you were asking about having hooks added to support modelling for reverse- and forward- engineering?  This I totally agree with.  The more languages EA supports, the more valuable it will be to the entire developer community.

If the code engineering aspect of EA could be abstracted out, then people could write add-ins to extend EA's code engineering for whatever language they wanted supported.  I'm not sure if this part of EA is easily extended or not (i.e., if this part of EA has an object model exposed).

ActionScript is a web technology used with Flash, right?  Why exactly would support be added to a Windows-based desktop application for ActionScript?

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Operations in an Actor for SPEM
« on: January 29, 2004, 11:43:36 am »
You can add them by dragging the attribute to the actor on a diagram.  Unfortunately, EA doesn't recognize you've added it until you reload the project.

The UML spec says that actors should be able to have operations, so I think this is a bug in EA.  In the meantime, you might create classes that correspond to the actors the same way that the SPEM spec says to create operations for activities that correspond to Use Case activities.

One of the few disadvantages (with a whole lot of advantages) of having your UI look-and-feel like another popular tool (VS.NET) -- everybody wants all the gadgets of that tool in yours too!

Suggestions and Requests / Working with database model
« on: October 16, 2003, 01:34:31 pm »
I just upgraded to the corporate edition and have started using the database connectivity to store models.

It'd be really nice if:

  • the most recently open files list included connections to a database
  • you could store 'aliases' to connection strings and choose them from a drop-down instead of recreating the connection each time
  • the connection dialogs remembered the last selections you made so I didn't have to select 'SQL Server' every time

If there's a way to do those kinds of things, I'd appreciate some tips because I couldn't seem to find them.

Suggestions and Requests / Plug-ins (yes, again, sorry)

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Feature Overload
« on: August 22, 2003, 02:30:45 pm »
I think a compromise would be if Sparx added the concept of plug-ins to the EA architecture and refactored many of the non-UML-specific features (project tracking, for example) into plug-ins that could be turned on or off.  A plug-in architecture would also make it easier to create extensions to EA that would facilitate interop with the external software systems described in the earlier posts.

I am, however, biased because I would very much like to see a plug-in architecture added to EA for other reasons than just those described here.

Suggestions and Requests / Contributions Area on Website?
« on: August 22, 2003, 02:21:49 pm »
Maybe I am just overlooking it, but how about a contribution library where people can share automation solutions, etc.  There are several suggestions on this list that I could probably crank out a quick-and-dirty solution for, but there isn't any place to put them.
