To improve usability in a future release of my add-in, I sometimes close an add-in popup window (C# form) to open another one.
So I have a class that runs Close() and Dispose() on the initial form object before creating another form (typically I open form1 from EA, form1 opens settingsform, and when settingsform is closed, the add-in determines that form1 needs to be closed and replaced with form2).
It works well, except that EA main screen/window sometimes gets hidden behind another application e.g. my web browser.

I tried to run repository.ShowWindow(1); but it doesn't do anything (BTW EA help doesn't say what value needs to be provided in ShowWindow to display or hide... even though I assume it's 1 & 0).

General Board / Reverse DB result: views dependencies & Parents tag
« on: April 27, 2018, 01:48:45 am »

I ran a DB Reverse on a SQL Server that has tables and views.
I'm interested in the link between views and the data sources i.e. tables ; I understand this is stored in the parents tagged value with a comma-separated list of table names.

I couldn't find in the user guide what the dependency links from Views to Tables mean. Anyone has an idea?
Ideally I'd like to have links from views to the table sources which I can get via a script.

Bugs and Issues / SQL Server Reverse on views: truncated definition
« on: April 20, 2018, 11:19:28 pm »

I got the result of an EA reverse engineering run on a SQL Server DB that contains views. When the view definition (query) is longer than 4000 characters, the resulting definition in EA (viewdef tag memo) is truncated at this position.
I found a post on this issue here:,10962.msg148710/topicseen.html#msg148710

Is there a way to resolve this in SQL Server, ODBC configuration or else?

It would be useful to add to the "Insert Related Elements" Connector types and Element types, a filter on Stereotypes e.g. to select "ABC" stereotyped classes that are associated with the current element.
It would also make sense to include the Stereotype on the Field chooser.

Automation Interface, Add-Ins and Tools / Script editor improvements
« on: April 11, 2018, 05:53:22 pm »
EA scripting editor works nicely (I use VBScript), yet a few enhancements would be nice to reach other scripting tools.
- Provide a collapse/expand commands (+/-)  on functions and routines
- Drop down list of functions and routines (as it's done when opening source code)

Could this be added in a future EA build?

Bugs and Issues / Python reverse - empty result
« on: March 19, 2018, 07:13:41 pm »

I received a python source code from a client to run the reverse eng. in EA.
EA processes all .py files without producing any result/class.

The Python code has :
- import declarations
- def (e.g. def functionA(arg1, arg2) : ...)

Is there any precondition to check so it works?

General Board / EA 14 beta comments & feedback
« on: March 08, 2018, 12:39:56 am »

Starting a thread on posting feedback about EA 14 beta if that's ok.
I used BPMN and noticed that the "Convert to..." option is no longer available: I created BPMN Service tasks and would like to change the type e.g. to User.
With previous versions, using the toolbox and adding the same type of element onto an existing one prompted to either create or change the type. This was a rather nice hint for users.

Can it be maintained in EA14?

I found a glitch on the quicklinker: I cannot create a Data Object from a BPMN task via a data association.

Is it possible to let a user assign keyboard shortcuts (e.g. F1, Maj+F1...) with an installed add-in menu/feature?

I'm trying to apply auto updates on a SysML IBD diagram when running the Synchronize Structural Elements, where EA creates new parts according to the BDD definition.
The only broadcast event I catch is EA_OnPreNewElement. However I need the Element ID to update via the OnPostNewElement or OnPostNewDiagramObject event.

Any reason why I'm not getting these events?

General Board / Cannot import UML patterns on a MySQL DB
« on: January 31, 2018, 07:18:39 pm »

I'm getting the following error when I try to import a UML pattern: "Failed to import Pattern '...'.  Pattern too large for database field."
I found a thread here matching this issue on MySQL EA projects:,26367.msg206158/topicseen.html#msg206158

Unfortunately even removing the image does not sort the issue as the XML file remains to large (140 kB).

Is there a way round to resolve this with the current build?

I have a very large EA project running on a centralised DB. I need to run EA 13's batch to create diagrams cache (images of each diagram are created in the DB).
Unfortunately EA eventually crashes after 5 mins.

Is there a way to run this batch update via an API call in an attempt to handle in a better manner the high volume of data to process?

General Board / Diagram simulation with prompts
« on: January 12, 2018, 04:33:29 am »

I need to set up an example for a project that needs to generate result values based on the input value + rules on an activity (or state chart diagram).
I had a look at Sparx EA Example. I found that triggers & signals with attributes can be used to prompt users for inputs (e.g. in the Music Player > PlayList).
Oddly I cannot get this to work on a new State diagram.
I created a Trigger call Input1 with an associated signal Input1 that has a Name attribute.
In the statechart diagram, I created a transition to the first state with:
- effect = this.input1=this.Input1.Name
- Triggers = Input1 (Signal) -> an entry is visible in the list.

When running the interpreted simulation, EA doesn't stop nor prompt for anything. What seems to be missing?

Also, can I triggers on Activity Diagrams to prompt for values when running the simulation?

I have a project running a custom UML profile via an installed MDG where UML stereotyped elements are displayed with custom colours.
Is there a way in a script via EA API to retrieve the current default bgcolor value on a given stereotype?

General Board / Package template - update existing elements
« on: January 05, 2018, 06:43:59 pm »
Package templates can be useful to alter the default colours for elements as illustrated here:
It works for elements created after the Package Template has been defined.
Is there a way with EA or any available scripts out there to update existing elements default rendering?

I'd like to call a common function where the expected argument is the script ID (as per t_script.scriptid).
It doesn't seem to be possible to dynamically retrieve such information for the running script. Am I missing something or do we need a new Repository.GetCurrentScriptID method in the API?
