Thank you for that steer, KP.
I read the documentation and it suggests that the attributes of classes may not be imported. Please, kindly clarify.

Suggestions and Requests / Import of Data Model via Excel Spreadsheet
« on: July 17, 2009, 02:55:34 am »
It would be useful if EA has a facility for loading a spreadsheet and mapping columns of the spreadsheet file to EA model elements and import the data to create data models.

I may not complain about the first class support I have obtained from the Sparx support team while using the transformation editor but following my experience, may I suggest that;

1. The Editor is anything but intuitive. The intellisense technology may be a useful feature but it behaves like a poorly designed pick-list

2. The support documentation is sparse with few useful examples.

3. The interpreter apparently does not like some combinations of symbols and when there is an error, the message is meaningless.

Given that this is the first place a user will go to in an attempt to customise the behaviour of the transformation engine, may I suggest a directed improvement of the Editor and related documentation

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Importe / Update XSD Schema
« on: March 17, 2009, 06:24:52 am »
An update feature is an invaluable part of a model-driven round-trip engineering environment. The in-built editor in EA which supports other programming languages has this feature.

When Sparxsystem enables this editor for XSD roundtrip-engineering as may happen in release 7.5, you should be able to achieve your goals.

Suggestions and Requests / Re: UML Based Web Application Generation
« on: March 04, 2009, 06:26:56 am »
Midnight,

I suspect that EA release 7.5 will have the components to deliver UML model-based generation of web applications using scripting languages like JSP & JSF. What is probably required is the provision of default code generation capability for JSF, JSP & ASP from UML models (Presentation & Navigation models).

A very useful add-in, the Screen Architect which currently generates HTML prototype may achieve this easily but I am awaiting comments from their Product Manager.

Suggestions and Requests / UML Based Web Application Generation
« on: March 03, 2009, 09:37:22 am »
Sparxsystem currently has implemented a UML Web Application Profile developed by Conallen. The problem is that they have not provided transformation HTML, ASP or JSF.

Rational Rose did have a transformation routine for this feature (ASP to be precise) 6 years ago. Since then, the domain of Web Application Modeling and Design has moved on with more enhanced UML Profiles like UWE (http://www.pst.ifi.lmu.de/projekte/uwe/) implemented in tools like ArgoUWE (based on ArgoUML) and MagicUWE (based on MagicDraw). The Metamodel is published on the project site.

IBM sponsored a project that delivered a UWE application modelling and transformation capability (model-to-model & model-to-text) using QVT in Eclipse for the Rational Software Architect.

Sparxsystem would reduce my tim-to-market, if this feature is delivered in EA.

Suggestions and Requests / EA & Web Application Support - JSP & ASP
« on: January 31, 2009, 06:04:09 am »
Great thanks to the Sparx team for the Archimate profile. The Strategy modelling is also cool. Is the strategy modeling profile based on the OMG BMM UML Profile or on the StratML schema?

EA has supported the modeling of web applications based on the UML Profile developed by Jim Conallen since the early versions.
The web modeling objects supported include JSP and ASP among others.

Please, kindly advise if the new code generation engines of version 7.5 will direcly support generation of JSP and if not, what can I do to use the EA 7.5 to generate JSP applications?

Can I generate an Access database schema (tables etc) via the ODBC interface using the EA 7.5?

Hi

Oracle Designer does not export its metadata as XMI (when I last used it which was in the late 90s) and so most of the CASE tools in the market with import facilities for XMI will not be able to access the metadata content.

If you contact a company, MetaIntegration on http://www.metaintegration.net/Products/MIMB/OMGXMI.html
They might just have a toolkit you need (at a cost of course).

Given that you have identified a market for this product, if you are a skilled programmer, you may want to develop the solution.

Good luck.

The best source of material on business rules would be the OMG specification on Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Rules (SVBR) at the MOG web site :http://www.omg.org/spec/SBVR/1.0/index.htm

You will find the XMI files useful and with your demonstrated willingness to contribute to the EA community, I believe you will have great progress in delivering a usable Add-In for SVBR very soon. I must again thank you for your great efforts.

Hi Srini,

Thank you for the article and the patterns download. Thses should interest 8 solution architects in my department.

I would be pleased if further work is done to integrate these artefacts to other good work including the UMM Profile for EA and Add-In (http://umm-dev.org/tools/umm-add-in/).

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Update for SysML
« on: December 26, 2008, 04:22:01 am »
Please, kindly raise a formal feature request with Sparxsystems.
A number of Add-Ins need be updated and I am hoping that the new release of EA (7.5) might be the trigger.

A few application prototypes are built on Access databases.

I struggle to understand the role of EA in a prototyping development process or put simply, what is the point of capturing application requirements, designing data structures and then finally have to manually create the database schema in Access. For a start, traceability goes through the window and  the reuse of analyses artefacts is zero.

I think EA will add most value to a prototyping processes utilising Access by integrating (via ODBC ) for forward engineering.

Software products like WebRatio (www.webratio.com) and many more in the market suggests that Sparxsystems provide a capability that is almost dated but sorely missed.

Product management at Sparxsystems need to match the current profile of EA to that of these applications for better insight on end-user requirements.

Suggestions and Requests / Access database ODBC direct forward engineering
« on: December 23, 2008, 04:23:19 am »
Dear all,

I have developed a data model and I would like to connect to an Access database via ODBC and generate the database tables directly.
I would like to do incremental updates/changes to the database directly from the model (must be kept in synch).

In release 834 of EA, support for Access 2007 is claimed. I am not sure if above feature as described is covered.

I can achieve this objective in Erwin but unfortunately, Erwin (3.5) does not read XMI.
