General Board / Re: Refresh XML controlled Packages

EAP (MDB) file can be opened by more than one person at the same time. I've used it e.g. with 5 persons at the same time using EA Corporate edition. Use JET4 (see EA options) for better reliability / stability.

General Board / Re: requirements management with RaQuest & EA

I have worked with EA and the Mil-Std-498 documentation for more than two years succesfully. What I do is to mirror the structure of the Mil documents (SSS, etc.) in EA view and package structures (each chapter and paragraph becomes a package).

Then I will be exporting RTF per chapter and replace the original chapters in a Mil document using the Word Master-Subdocument feature. Traceability is done by using the various relationships that EA (UML) offers and by exporting the relationship matrix (via CSV and Excel) to a Word table (not yet automated).

I have tweaked a RTF template in EA to match our format. After that I commonly run some self made macros in MS Word to tune the last details (e.g. removing technical terms from an SSS to hide some of the UML language for the customer).

We're still working on an automation interface to insert the EA Mil structure to a Mil template directly, but progress is slow (always short of time  :-/ ).

General Board / Re: Controlling Diagram Size in rtf file

The size cannot be changed other than using less diagram space in EA itself. You can however write a macro in MS Word to resize the larger pictures (there are functions to iterate all images, I believe OLE objects of a specific type). Sorry, I don't have the code at hand.

Hi Michael,

You're saying "when classes are assigned to components" (two messages ago), what is the action that you take? It seems like you're stating that nog EA, but the modeller takes an action here.

You also had a couple of questions on crossreferences, I think you can use the Search and the Locate in Projecttree functions.

Next to the relationship view, there is also a possibility to see the links when the properties of a class are viewed. And there is also a hierarcy window that can be shown on your desktop.

General Board / Re: Big class diagram, documentation and more ques

I think that Martin is talking about 24 diagrams A4 size, while you are talking about 1 diagram of 24 A4 (or letter ;) ). Diagrams larger than the output pagesize are made smaller to fit your page. A diagram of 24 times a pagesize becomes unusable. You'll have to copy - paste parts of your diagram to new diagrams.

General Board / Re: Links(Relationship) do not showup.

If both classes are contained in the same diagram, then the link is shown. If only the derived class is on the diagram, the base class name is shown in italic top right of the class name compartment.

I've opened an EAP file with more than one user for many times. So it should be possible. I'm not sure, but it might depent on the version of MS Access that you have installed. Could you provide some details on your settup? E.g. is the file on a network, what version of MS Access are you using, have you checked the JET4 checkmark in the settings of your EA project?

General Board / Re: Sybase ODBC import bug

Thanks Henk, I'll check if that's the case and, if it is, wait for the support of Sybase 11.

Thanks for the reaction. I'm using build 355, so I have to check with the new version. Maybe it has something to do with the ODBC driver settings. Maybe I can try adding the datatypes. If I find the answer, I will repost.

Hi Laurent,

I now find myself in the same position (same error message). Did you find any clue to solve the problem? It also seems like EA does not recognize all the types correctly (varchar[2147483647] instead of text). Do you experience the same?

General Board / Future plans

Hi Sparx,

I would be interested in a renewal of the Future plans topic of this forum. Maybe you could indicate the rough plans for next year or so. The current list (;action=display;num=1055822692, from June 2003) has almost completely been processed, excellent!

Keep up the great work,

Simple: no impact. You can invent your own structure without losing any functionality.

General Board / Re: Using EA 4.0 means you can't go back?
« on: August 03, 2004, 12:22:02 am »
Hi Marcus,

It is expected behaviour. The user that used the repository of v3.60 for the first time with v4.0 got a very explicit conversion wizard to answer. That wizard asks if you want to convert the repository, then creates a backup and than converts the original to the new repository format. The user probably didn't notify anyone that he had followed that wizard.

With EA 4.0 you are not able to use a v3.60 repository directly and the conversion is therefore a must for v4.0 users.

The repository changes are mostly likely to happen with major version changes. At least warn your users not to use the conversion wizard (always started before conversions, there will be no silent ones).

General Board / Re: Offline use of a shared model
« on: August 12, 2004, 10:44:03 pm »
You're probably not using the EAP file (MS Access), but a more mature database. The replication mechanism is one from MS Access and is thus not available when working on other databases. The way to work offline is:

1) Lock package you need to work offline with so that it cannot be changed at the online site;
2) Export package to XML/XMI;
3) Import XMI in a new EAP file, created at the offline site;

When ready to synch:
4) Export XMI again from offline site;
5) Unlock package at online site and if necessary the parent package as well (not sure here);
6) Import XMI at online site in the parent package that you've been working on (the original child package will be deleted just before import);

I've not used these steps a lot, so I might be slightly off at points.

General Board / Re: something wrong on windows2000 platform

The latter one is a feature, not a bug. Delete only deletes items from the diagram, so you can use the item in the projectbrowser on other diagrams as well. Using the newest EA build (732) you can use Ctrl-Delete to delete the item from all diagrams and the projectbrowser at once (so be carefull).
