Fantastic, thank you guys.

General Board / Linked model elements
« on: June 17, 2008, 01:16:36 am »
For the life of me I stupidly cannot figure out how to link from one model element to another, for example the use case models provided as examples by EA have an infinity sign or pair of glasses on them which when double clicked take you to the underlying diagram, such as a sequence diagram.

I cannot find anywhere how to do this or what to search for in terms of looking up the help.  Hyperlinks do not seem to be the correct search so I'm hoping someone can enlighten me please.

Many thanks

General Board / Exporting Packages to CSV (Including Tags)
« on: April 29, 2008, 10:57:20 pm »
I have just spent some time learning how to create UML Profile to assign Tags to Packages in the hope that when I export the packages to CSV that they can be included and viewed by my client.  Unfortunately the CSV export doesn't seem to include Tags.

Can anyone suggest if this is possible or a better way?

My aim is to export the up to date Package list every so often so the client can view the tagged info assign, e.g. % benefits, % effort etc.  It would be easiest in CSV so they can manipulate through Excel.

General Board / Re: Resources View Disappeared

Magic Dermot, thank you!

Very strange bug.  In the View menu, Resources was highlighted but just not visible and selecting it didn't do anything.  But the reset has worked so thank you very much.

General Board / Resources View Disappeared
« on: April 29, 2008, 02:21:28 am »
For some reason my Resources view has disappeared and no matter how many times I select it either from the View menu or right-clicking, or even Alt+6, it will not come back.

I have also uninstalled EA fully and reinstalled and still no joy.

Has anybody else had this problem?

General Board / Re: Show Level Numbering - How does it work?
« on: April 28, 2008, 11:37:57 pm »
Ah!  Now I'm looking at the elements I can see what it's doing.  Unfortunately I don't think this is going to help me but at least I know not to waste any more time on this particular feature.  Thanks for letting me know.

Do you know any other way to assign a unique reference at package level that can be used as onwards communication to customers?  As a team we're working in an Agile environment and have broken down the full system (self-serve solution) into managable modules of work.  These functional components, which we aim to deliver as separate work packages, are to be communicated to the customer(s) via a Spreadsheet which will effectively act as a deliverables roadmap.  What we don't want to have to do is maintain both a spreadsheet and an EA model.  Once we export the first CSV for the spreadsheet, provide the numeration, then subsequent exports need to maintain the unique numbering of the previous export.

Having used EA for a while I still haven't figured out the 'best-practise' way to do this.  I would assume this to be fairly common whatever the method, Agile or otherwise, i.e. the use of a deliverables roadmap where changing requirements or priorities need to be communicated outside EA?

Thanks again

Damian

General Board / Show Level Numbering - How does it work?
« on: April 28, 2008, 08:39:24 pm »
I am trying to assign fixed numbering to Packages within my project.  The EA help suggests using the Package Context Menu which is found when right clicking on a Package, and then selecting 'Show Level Numbering'.  I have done this but no numbering shows, and is not shown when creating RTF's.

I need to be able to communicate Packages, and other elements to my client that are fixed, i.e. as a reference number that will remain over time.  They will receive the documentation via RTF's (or web) and I would like to have the numbering/references reflected in the documentation and not as a siigned by Microsoft Word which can change on each export.

Can anybody help?

Thanks

Bugs and Issues / Re: Unable to view read-only files
« on: June 18, 2008, 01:11:50 am »
Thank you very much David.  After all the messing around and getting everybody's Jet 4.0 installations up to date, and general faffing around and testing, it turns out it was simply the analyst didn't have read/write access to the directory where the EAP file is stored.

Doh!!!!  :-[

Thought I would update this so the same silly thing doesn't happen to others.  Thanks for all your help.

Thanks.  How can we change our Jet engine settings to stop the exclusivity?

Sorry to piggy-back this post but I have a sort of similar issue where some of the guys here, every so often gets the error message:
"An error has Occurred: The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file 'File path and name'.  It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data."

Everyone has drive access, there's no version control in place and we're using 7.1.  Have you any ideas?

A similar problem, just as annoying as the many others with regards RTF generation; I've added a Gloassry to the end of my template with a style heading 1, which I've fixed the font, numbering and everything else discussed so far in the topic.

It all looks fine until I generate the output and the Glossary, which should be at heading 1, drops to heading 2 and I've tried all sorts of combinations of moving things around.

Got a fix for this one?

Just to let you know you are not on your own.  I have tried on many occasions to figure out why the numbering for level 2 starts, n.0, or why the formatting of level 2 or 3 is not the same as I've specified in the template.  Usualy blue and in new times roman even after I've gone through everything single item and changed to black and ariel.

I'm now experimenting with editing in word and copying and pasting back into the RTF generator but just when I think I'm getting somewhere, it does another crazy reformat.

As for the RTF generator whitepaper, then I'm afraid I've given up on it.  You get close, but it doesn't work like the whitepaper suggests, similar to the master and virtual document RTF help.  After being an advocate for so long of EA, and having just intorduced it to yet another company, I'm starting to get slightly disheartened.  It is generally the poor document management that is letting it down.

Can somebody please provide a good resource to help with RTF generation?  Or suggest a method of bypassing it, i.e. using Word and copy and paste back in?

Thanks

Damian

I've been using a UML profile to define tagged values for my packages, use cases and requirements so my client can input their bespoke information.

Now that we're quite some way into the modelling, whenever I change the description, or add a new tagged value to the profile, the only way I can seem to have this reflected in all the model elements all created is to go through each one and manually add them.  Is there a way to:
- Change a description of a tagged value in a UML profile?
- Add/remove tagged values from a profile that would automatically be reflected in the model elements already created using the profile?

Many thanks

Damian
