General Board / Relationship Matrix for BPMN
« on: November 15, 2013, 11:06:19 am »
Hi All,

I am trying to use the relationship matrix function in EA to build a matrix of a BPMN model with Lanes on the Horizontal axis and Activities on the Vertical axis. The intent is to use it as a possible baseline to define a RACI model.

I can build the matrix successfully, but my problem is I am unable to get the grids to represent the relationship from the activities to there respective lanes.

The only thing I can think of is there is no specific link type for this style of relationship even though the activity element lives within the lane element within the project browser.

Can anyone give me a prompt where I might be going wrong?

Is there a reason you are using the HTML v's the Client?

If it is security reasons, you may want to consider looking at the EA Lite Client.

Hi Dwang,

If I understand you correctly, I think you are trying to make use of the GUID with the HTML.

Here is a post on that item:

General Board / Re: Business Architecture - Advice Please!
« on: September 30, 2013, 01:21:52 pm »
Just thought I would provide a update to my journey on this item, as googling has not provided any real world public practical examples to benchmark against.

So Basically I have built a very high level view of our products and services and functions which demonstrates their support to deliver to our customer.

From here I have now built a second layer package for the functions which models the core activities.

From here I have built a "third layer" for the Activities and "second layer" for the Products and Services which breakdown into four packages:

1. Business, Application and Technology package - Provides a view of the itegration of Actors and Roles, Business Services, Business Processes, Application Services, Application Components and Infrastructure
2. Business Process Package - Provides detailed BPMN models for the Activity
3. Policy and Procedure Package - Provides links to relevant artefacts stored in our organisation for the Activity
4. Reporting Package - Provides links to relevant artefacts to metrics and measures such as balanced scorecards for the Activity
5. Requirements Package - Provides the ability to capture and model business requirements for the Activity

So far, I must say the management of the linkages from various packages and the redundancy of elements as the models mature has been challenging.

If anyone has some feedback or words of wisdom, happy to hear from you.

Hi All,

I stumbled accross this document when googling and researching yesterday. Page 7 is definately where my thread is pitching at and how I am shaping my packages:

G'day Helmut,

Your package structure is a starting point
I am using TOGAF, so it is pretty prescribed, managing the elements will be my challenge.

Guess the main reason for my post is this a new package in a new domain for me and didn't want to make a rod for my own back, but as your reply indicated the package will evolve and mature over time which I need to be open minded too.  ;D

Baselines rely on disciplined working. If you and your team are disciplined than it will work.
It's just me, hence the elevation from Business Analyst to Enterprise Architect.  :o

Hi All,

Just looking for some advice with my packaging in EA. The reason being my core skills are BPMN and Business Analysis/software development and the way things are I am quickly ascending into the Enterprise Architecture space and dancing across all domains. Look Out!  ;D

My current task I have built the following package structure in my current state:

Level 1 - Function Model
Level 2 - Business Services, Contracts, Service Qualities
Level 2 - Process, Events, Controls, Products
Level 2 - Functions

There may be a level 3 under some Level 2.

So, I have populated these packages with our organsiational functions, services and products.

I have then created a package called "View Model" and then another package called "Business Product, Service, Function View" and dragged the functions, services and products from the above packages onto my diagram to build a view for my stakeholders.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Is this best practice what I doing?
2. Should I use this respository of elements to build other diagrams and stakeholder views?
3. Am I over complicating things and is there a better way to do this?
4. I am using manage baselines to help version control the package through the stakeholder iterations, should I beware of anything with this function?

Thanks in advance,

Stoppy :D

My two cents, it would be nice if there was a timeline provided or communicated at a high level of release dates and major features.

This would certainly help from a change/release management with our internal organisation.

Hi Qwerty, Geert, Stefan,

Thanks for the replies. I will have to investigate your options a bit further to understand how this may be implemented as I am using the baseline feature within EA for my packages.

General Board / Managing Redundant/No longer used Elements
« on: September 10, 2013, 08:38:06 am »
Hi All,

I have done some searching and unable to find any topics on this subject.

We have several products, services and functions through discovery, robust debate and testing are either no longer required or are a subset of the agreed products, services and functions and will transform in the Business Architecture into other elements such as process, activities, etc...

My question is how do I manage the products, services and function elements that are no longer required. I do not want to delete them, just wondering if any one has any suggestions.

One thought was to create a package called recycle bin and just park them here and exclude the package from the nightly HTML export. Any thoughts would be great???

Thought I would resurrect this post, rather then create new one and have sent a PM to Daparici.

Basically my requirement is we have all types or metrics/measures for reporting which may plug into various different corporate reporting outputs and is currently documented into a massive document.

My thoughts were to represent the metrics using the "requirements" element and document the specific criteria as a linked document and then add the relevant requirements which service the required output into a model for the stakeholders. There are various metrics/measures which service multiple outputs and theses will be reused.

Just wondering if anyone can provide any further input.

General Board / Re: Symbol, Icon or Visual Representation of Eleme
« on: August 06, 2013, 10:17:52 am »

Thanks qwerty, I am already using color via the legend to represent size of the element when we build out the next layer of detail.

He recommends always adding the type in square brackets to every element name. I like this style, especially for an audience that doesn't read archimate modesl every day, which is probably most of our audience.

Thanks Ken, yeah the out of the box elements are helping with the little archimate symbols and I have a several elements at the top of the model with text description to help describe what the element represents which is meeting the existing stakeholders needs.

Your suggestion was my last resort, for a stakeholder perspective it will meet the new stakeholders needs, from a cosmetic perspective I will have to live with it.

The stakeholders needs are more important  ;D

Thanks for the replies and thanks for the link KP, good resource.

General Board / Symbol, Icon or Visual Representation of Element
« on: August 05, 2013, 09:13:22 am »
Hi All,

I am using Archimate to build a model for some key stakeholders in my organisation. All has been going well using the Services, Functions, Product elements to build out the view which provides the visual representation and icons.

We have now had some government and financial based stakeholders come into the picture and grappling with language. For example, a Product is called "Services" and Services is called "Suboutput". Not All products and services need to be represented this way.

I already using the legend to represent the size of each element, ie. Small, Medium, Large.

So my question, is there a way I can use another a symbol, icon or some other visual representation on these elements to satisfy my stakeholders.

At worst case scenario, I was going to update the text for each element and put in brackets the relevant description:

Product "My Product is a Secret (Service)"

Please note I am using the EA user interface only.

General Board / Re: Move the Network-based keystore to another Ser

Hi Aladham,

Hope this helps -

We moved a physical server to virtual which upset the keystore, we needed to log a request with sparx for the Admin to resolve the problem.

General Board / Re: HTML Output and External Hyperlinks
« on: May 29, 2013, 11:57:56 am »
Hi Graham,

I have used the HTML export alot in my time using EA.

One of the little tricks I discovered is:
Create a Element
Select Properties
In the Notes add the Iframe Tag
Example <iframe src="" width="1000px" height="1000px"></iframe>

It's not perfect, but just might be the outcome you are looking for, there maybe a way to increase the notes field in the HTML configuration in the application itself.
