Bugs and Issues / BPMN: Invalid hierachy level for Sequence Flow
« on: July 15, 2014, 09:31:10 am »
Hi All,

Wondering if someone can confirm this is a bug or a issue with my modeling implementation.

What am I doing:

Created a BPMN 2.0 diagram (Business Process Diagram)
The diagram has 1 pool
The diagram has 3 lanes
Two of lanes have sub lanes
The diagram has activities, gateways, start and end events

What is my issue:

When I select a activity from the sub lane and try to join them to another element in a sub lane or lane with a sequence flow I am presented with the following:

BPMN: Invalid hierachy level for Sequence Flow

I do not encounter the message when I select a activity and join them to another element in the same lane.

Move element to lane required lane, join elements with sequence flow and then move element back to existing lane

Windows 7 SP1
EA Version 11.0.1105 (Corporate Edition)
SQL 2012

Thanks in advance,

Stoppy  ;)

I've never come accross any such ability to do what you are after in all the years I have worked with EA.

Although I now advocate documents be stored outside of EA and write url's into my artificats and documents where they are stored on shared drives or sharepoint and use MS Word to edit to control versions.

Sounds like a FR to me mate!

Hi Jon,

I have this problem with V10 -

It is a bug and I am sitting on V9.3 until it is resolved. Not sure if it is related problem as your issue.

Bugs and Issues / Re: Archimate 2.0 - Bus Layer Diag - "Product Elem
« on: July 17, 2013, 02:30:47 pm »
Hi Phil,

Yes, you are correct, from what I have been provided the Arhimate 2 specification states "Name being contained in the oblong at the top", hence no wrapping which is what I was wanting.

Here is the alternative solution I was supplied.

Also in the EA 10 there is an example in the Learning center topic under: Modeling Language | Build a Profile | Extend a Technology

I have decided to live with the current behaviour rather then create a new set of elements to manage.

For anyone following this thread, Sparx have confirmed this behaviour is not a bug.

"The ArchiMate 2.0 specification states the element shape to specify the name being contained in the oblong at the top and EA is thereforing conforming with specification."

An alternative solution is to be supplied, anyone wanting this please let me know and I will update thread.

Thanks Phil.

I have logged a bug request with Sparx.

Bugs and Issues / Archimate 2.0 - Bus Layer Diag - "Product Element"
« on: July 02, 2013, 02:21:47 pm »
Hi All,

I am using the Archimate 2.0 - Business Layer Diagram from the EA user interface.

I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion with the issue I am encountering with the "Product" element.

I have for example a product name  "The Name of My Product is Secret".

When I resize the element the text wraps to the new size, but the inline box or label within the product does not adjust to suit the text wrapping which results in a ugly looking element.

The only way I can seem to get around this issue is to size the element based on the number of characters in the product name which is blowing the overall size of my model to an unnecessary size.

Does anyone have a suggestion to my issue or this a behaviour of EA and worthy of a feature request?

Bugs and Issues / EA Version 10 - BPMN 1.1 Diagram - Pools and Lanes

Hi There,

I am giving EA Version 10 a run down before we install into production.

I am having a issue where the lanes are not docking correctly. This is what I am experiencing:

Insert Pool
Insert Primary Lane into Pool
Insert Secondary Lane into Primary Lane

The result is the Secondary Lane wants to natively dock to the Pool, even with trying to manual manipulating. This was a little quirky in previous versions, but seems to have gotten a worst. Does anyone have any suggestions ?

PS. I have a screenshot, but can't figure out how to upload attachments?

Uml Process / Re: Requirements model vs User Stories in scrum to
« on: February 11, 2015, 09:53:31 pm »
Hi EA9000,

First off, Geert if your a grumpy old man, then I must be a grumpier old man, but I have to agree with qwerty.  ;D

Anyhow I started writing a long winded response but lost it with a BSOD, so cut it down to this from my perspective:

1. User Stories are great method of engaging the customer and capturing real requirements such as business rules, acceptance criteria and core process flow needs in a whiteboard workshop.
2. Use Cases are great method for giving the required details to the technical resource or developer, when I give a use case to the customer they just glaze over.

With regards to your Project needs you should probably promote stopping the project and rethink and reassess your framework and remove duplication as there might be a revolt from your BA's  ;D Sometime we are so fixed on delivering that project we never stop to refine and improve things on the way!

I would like to highlight there is some great integration with EA into TFS into MS Project Server for managing agile projects which provides the following:
1. Business Analyst writes process maps, gui's, requirements in EA
2. Developer estimate and assign task against requirements from EA in TFS
3. Project Manager drives project schedule from TFS estimates
4. Scrum master drives sprints from the TFS in dashboard.

The thing to remember with agile, is most people will try and perfect documentation, but the whole idea of agile is create conversation, trust and quick visibility and delivery to the customer.

Also as the requirements are light weight, it would be assumed and expected the documentation would expand and be refined as the capability matures from future releases.

Final note, it is quiet interesting how many BA's I have seen who are so keen to fill out the Use Case template, rather then white boarding and having a conversation with a customer.

Hope that helps!

Automation Interface, Add-Ins and Tools / Re: HTML Export
« on: February 02, 2015, 11:15:48 am »
Hi Monsieur,

If you are referring to the last layer is a package containing all of your objects/elements.

You could try and exclude the Package from the HTML Export.

To exclude a package from the HTML Export, undertake the following:
From Project Browser | Select Package | Right Click | Select Documentation then Generated Report Options | Select Exclude Package from Generated Reports then OK.

I have a package called "recycle bin" in my repository which I excluded from the customers HTML Export.

Hope that helps!

Hi Pam,

I had similar requirement a while back.

You may want to check out this little add-in:

You are able to manage the shapes to a degree. I have not upgraded since the original release, but it help me get to a desired outcome for a executive manager when I used it.

G'day Glassboy,

I worked with a tech to develop a solution similar to what you are after by exporting HTML to Sharepoint 2007, our basic process was.
1. Send Notification HTML Export started
2. Delete Existing Files and wait X minutes
3. Send Notification Delete Completed
4. Run HTML Export
5. Send Notification HTML Export Completed

We had some small problems:
1. Dedicated User needs to be logged onto server to run export application
2. Connections to Sharepoint would fail sometimes resulting in failed export.

Currently I am in new shop and we have just put in Sharepoint 2013.

At the moment, I just export to web/file server via this little application - Code Post - and run reference links from sharepoint to the file location using this method -

When we get some more technical people onboard, I am going to explore this capability in Sharepoint 2013 -

I hope this helps.
