Suggestions and Requests / zxgypknly Association Ends (again)
« on: March 06, 2007, 12:31:20 am »
Don't know if this rightly goes here or "General" or "UML" but...

Association Roles (Source|Target).Changeable atribute!
From the hemp help file ...
Changeable :  Specifies how this role is subject to change

So what do the three offered ^%$^%$ options mean 'zactly???

"none"= is not now or ever changeable ??? (i.e. it can never even be set? ???
   "frozen"= ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? (is a fish finger? ???)
"add only" = is only changeable by an accountant or actuary ???

What I want is to specify that the attribute is able to be set once and once only ...   at any time in the instances life cycle.  In fact,  :-/ :'( :'( :-X :-/ , what I am trying to do is specify that for this particular attribute, which is a collection, that you can only add thingo's to it.    You, she, he and not even the dog can't delete it once its added (and persisted).

perpetually confused & infuriated

Aye, and there be the knot (knut?)
I am proposing that the current behaviour be changed.  Some many moons ago I said the diagram is not the model, reality is the model and a diagram is some aspect/facet/viewpoint of it.  The EA model (to me at least,) is the ¨repository¨.  I want to make many, many diagrams that ellicit some salient aspect of ¨ye truth¨ as, sic, truth! Within that metaphore (truthe and ye realitie), aspects of non-code-genyration consideration (non-structural/non-beavioural, yet  somehow informationally significant)  still yet need to be displayed - locally!
Let me emphasize,   the diagram is not the model.
If I walk up to a whiteboard and draw a UML diagram of something I am trying to explain, the only things I´ll draw are those things pertinent to the current conversation.  If, and only if, the ensuing argument ellicits some pertinent an agreed outcome (ye nurd X shall ellicité ye behaviour Y under constrainte Z), then and only then shall such agreement be included in my model.
After many hours of deliberation and many printings of the old trusty whiteboard, we hopefully have a structural and behavioural conclusion.  To me, EA is that whiteboard, that is the metaphore and tool I work with.  I may produce 20 or 30 diagrams in a day that are trying to ellicit some aspect of the system, at any level of abstraction.  Some are useful, some are not.  Those that are, and quite a few of those that are not, are retained.   Consider an architecture report, it discussed the alternatives to the solution and recommmends some optimals. Any such optimal may be conditional on many different value points, and it is up to the adopters to decide the outcome.  I say EA has exactly the same value. It is a tool that lets me draft, cast and evaluate alternatives. Once they have been evaluated then we can take the irrevocable step towards casting them in stone as a design - or, to get back to my point including structural and/or behavioural decisions on the model.
I am becoming a bit dismayed that an excellent modelling tool, has of late (and wherefore I know not) seem to be becoming a (YUK!) CASE tool.

(cough, cough... ahem!)
cuse me for butting in here, but as I have said elsewhere ¨ijus are people too¨
To me, ( :)) the problem is simple.  If I change a property of a structural element, that change is (and should be) reflected in all visualisations of that element.  If I change a diagramatic aspect of a ¨nurd or ije" it should just be reflected in the current diagram.
Adding a ¨nurd" to a diagram doesn´t automatically add the same nurd to all other diagrams in the model (or some subset of the model) So why should adding an ¨ije¨ do so?
a) because some ijes are structural/behavioural and some aint.
b) because we aint reilsed that yet!!!

If diagram A and B contain nurds X and Y, and I add an ije betwooks X and Y that is structural or behavioural, then I am changing the nature of both the elements and their interelationships.  If, OTOH, I add an ije that does not implicitly or explicitly change the composition of either nurd, for example an ¨ïnformation flow¨ ije, then that modelling information token is of use an interest to only the current diagram.

(sorry, I´ll shut up now)

I'll have the fifth!

but can we have "bumps" or "spikes" and not "gaps" please.

My foggy crystal ball see's that would be difficulties in having  more than one edittable diagram visible at once, even though the diagram tabs allow a context switch at the moment.

So here's a possible interim improvement suggestion.

In the main, we only want to be able to refer to "the other window" when working in a given diagram.  Given that a dockable window is capable of bing moed to the other monitor, how about a dockable "reference diagram" form that allows all normal actions bar changing the diagram?

Thoughts? Responses?

No, you have to include a code cutter in the process.  :-/

Absolutely brilliant!

I probably bang about between tabs several hundred times a day.  Most, if not all my models consist of different scenarios (actually facets) of the same structures, all having the "same" name.

This would be a huge leap forward.

Me too!

ps if your wondering where I have been - I'll be back soon hehe!  Contract out of hell finishes next week.

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Autodeletion should "dirty" diagram
« on: November 28, 2006, 04:52:33 am »
Just a clarification query.

When you do that - and then close the 'affected' diagram  - does it ask whether to save it?  (NB this is different to marking it dirty!)

Also, is there any impact you have observed when that  diagram is reopened?

I ask because this may explain something I've been scratching my bald spot over.

20 Minute after EDIT: On second thought, no this isn't the same weirdity in behaviour or the same feature request.  But I may leave it here just to piggy back in the hope that someone has seen some inconsistency in having mutliple diagrams open and - after deleting an element from one,  it reappears as a "project browser" orphan - i.e it's not visible in any diagram, nor in the browser, but it sure as heell is there in the t_objects table???!!!///

These are all SMP´s

1) Set the alt-P shortcut on the Operations form [Copy] button.
2) Set the alt-P shortcut on the Attributes form [Copy] button.
3) Make the add Package context menu item automatically open the Change Diagram Type dialog box --- triple please with ice cream -- before it creates yeat another package diagram.
4)  [glb]Multiple select[/glb] (or have I sadi that before? a couple of times?)

Not so SMP
5) Links(*) are people too! Give them the same rights as ¨elements¨.

Goin' back to sleep now.....

* --> Paolo: edges, smedges whatever.  My Polish pure maths professor called them ¨nurds and ijuds" or at least that´s what we though he was talking about.

Following on from
Also, if you look at the Main Menu under Element | Inline Features, you can tear that menu off to use as a toolbar.
in the previous post.

What would be trooly cool  8)  would be the ability to tear off specific toolbars (e.g. profiles).

No, that was just me when I created the post.  The form submit url is correct.

To get back to the original...

I note that if I turn off the "Use stereotype icons" the nodes work... but I dont get the pretties and it still doesn't solve the link label issue.
