General Board / Error message
« on: October 13, 2008, 09:43:44 am »
Getting this error message when creating a MySQL database instance using MySQL_MyISAM_BaseModel.sql and MySQL ODBC 5.1 driver on Windows Vista SP1.

Is this anything to be concerned about?

ERROR: *** t_umlpattern - record no: 12. The XML for UML Pattern 'Abstract Factory' is too long and Abstract Factoryhas been set to an empty string.

Mind letting me know how you are able to export the Relationship Matrix to CSV?

I haven't noticed that functionality before.

General Board / Re: Moving EA diagrams between EAP projects

I just figured this out myself a few days ago.

Assuming you have all the objects you want to move / copy in a 'package' -- you right click on the package and do an XMI export.

Then you import into the project you want.

Seems to work pretty good, actually.

Let me know how you go.

General Board / Printing - General Problems
« on: September 04, 2008, 02:43:12 pm »

Today I've spent way too much time trying to get the very important Relationship Matrix to print on an A3 sheet of paper.

However, EA insists that this be printed in an A4 format, regardless of what I attempt to do. And I've tried it all, believe me. Best I can do is an A4 version printed on multiple  A3 sheets.

I'm using EA as an Enterprise Architecture consultant. And printing is very important in this use context. Don't care so much about reverse-engineering or code generation.  I'm using EA as a very powerful 'sketch' tool. I'm having some good success with it, too. But in this use pattern, we tend to use A3 and larger print sizes. I'm sure others do as well.

Just seems that the way EA interacts with printers generally is very poorly  implemented and thought out. As in: "We got this other really hard stuff to work - but we haven't really gotten around to worrying about getting diagrams and reports to print out looking half-way decent."

Anyone know if this is something we can expect Sparx to improve any time soon? It's very disappointing. I would not be able to encourage my professional colleagues to use EA with the poor print support it currently implements.

If you really want an eye-opener - try using the "Scale to x pages by x pages" option in the application. It distorts the print image in a very .... surprising .... manner.

Am I wrong? Too picky? Do others share my perception?

The question is where is Sparxsystem in its lifecycle.

Mmm. About half way there, I think.

...A lot of people in the community believe that IBM is after current customers of System Architect which they hope to move over to tools like Rational Software tools.

If I were a corporate developer looking for tools, my consideration will cover the lifecycle cost of tools like the IBM Rational tools (As a former user, they are not cheap) and how easy it is to configure the application development environment without requiring IBM consultants costing over 1000 pounds a day in fees.

I had access to the full IBM Rational tool set with previous employer. The recent Eclipse-based implementation is a vast improvement over the old Rational interface. And I kind of respect the IBM 'Grand Vision' of having a 'one stop shop' of tools for every possible aspect of the SDLC.

But I use EA only as a 'sketch' tool, not as a 'blueprint' tool. For my needs, EA is just about perfect. After analysis gets beyond a certain level of depth, Visio just doesn't cut it.

What I do find out in the wilds of professional life is that a lot of folk use EA to generate diagrams that are complete and utter rubbish. Not only are they not UML, they're incoherent in any modeling context. That's something that makes me a bit grumpy, actually. Cack-handed whiteboard boxes and lines masquerading - assuming the form of - UML. If you're going to be silly, be silly using Visio, not EA / UML.

Code generation from UML design is not for the faint-hearted. Not for me, certainly. I admire those of you who can make it work at a truly professional level.

General Board / Telelogic Modeller?

This question may be stretching the purpose of this thread / forum but I'm going to see what happens. Please don't flame me.

The free version of Telelogic Modeller - should I even bother downloading it just to see if it's of any value at all?

Have any of you had a look?

From time to time I speak to customers who are considering a modelling tool - some have mentioned this one.

My view is that 'free' probably means 'don't bother'.

General Board / Re: delete unused classes
« on: August 07, 2008, 07:52:12 am »
Me too.

Does EA have a built-in report (or could one be created) that would show classes that appear in no diagram?

Or - better - a 'SELECT' mechanism that displays a list of classes that appear in no diagram, allowing the user to delete all or some of the classes?

My naive response: 'They put a man on the moon in 1968. Surely all these intelligent people (working on EA) can fix a simple problem like this.'

Thanks - forgot about right click in browser. Apologies for asking not terribly smart question.

General Board / Project Browser 'Expand All' Function?
« on: July 12, 2008, 01:44:12 pm »
Is there a simple command that will expand all levels of a model in the Project Browser?

Searched the fora to see if anyone else had asked this question before, but couldn't find a similar prior posting.

Beta bug report page has now been added, here:

May be a good idea to expose this url on the main registered users page:

I can't see it there - unless my eyes are getting worse ...

General Board / multi-segment connecting lines
« on: April 12, 2005, 09:20:29 pm »
I've discovered that normal straight lines can automatically become multi-segment lines on a diagram.

Subsequent moves of objects then require fiddling to get the line segments straight.

How can I force connecting lines back to non-segmented, straight lines?

I checked FAQs, help file and EA configuration options but didn't see anything obvious...

Or was I mistaken in some way with regard to the function of "Cancel"?

Bugs and Issues / Re: Infinite Loop 2014: The Movie

Hi Simon

I somehow clicked on something I didn't intend to, and got prompted for the DAO thingy, at which point I thought "I don't know what this is - I didn't want to be here - I don't want to enter anything - just cancel".

But "Cancel" kept taking me back to "what DAO do you want" rather than letting me off the hook easily.

I had to "End Tast" using Task Manager to get out of it. I suppose I could have just typed "ASDF" and then figured a way out from there, but "Cancel" should allow the user to exit from whatever they were doing, regardless of context.

Usually, "Cancel" means "I don't want to do anything" as in "Cancel"?

Not "Go ahead. Force me to enter something when I don't want to."
