Suggestions and Requests / Is EA Forum Search broken ?
« on: May 02, 2007, 12:48:42 am »
There have been comments in threads about forum Search not finding postings that are known to be in there, unless very specific terms are used.

Is there any forum admin activity that needs to be performed here - perhaps reindexing the forum (if that's applicable) and maybe reviewing the search system's list of ignored 'common words' which might be excluding too many.

This is possibly quite apart from YaBB itself having any problems, which would be addressed by installing a newer YaBB - without losing the forum database !!

Any 'test case' examples of blatantly incorrect behaviour ?

No, it's definitely one of Mr David Bowie's (or should I say Mr. Z. Stardust) former band members ...

Actually I think EA should go a little further, and maybe define some kind of 'project container' folder.

This would allow files from different subsections/subprojects of your model to reside relative to different folders (as appropriate).

The folders themselves could then be assigned
a) paths relative to each other and then finally b) absolute paths.

Allowing folders to be defined globally (for all users) or locally (per user) would permit sharing of global resources using globally defined folders; work on a subproject could proceed using a folder mapped to the local filesystem for the current user.

You could even protect global resources by setting the folder read-only.

In essence, a basic 'virtual folder' mechanism.
Or maybe this is over-the-top ?!

EA Help - "Upsizing Models"
If you purchase the Corporate Edition, you have the option to use a SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle 9i, PostgreSQL, Adaptive Server Anywhere or MSDE data repository.

From the forums:
EA supports the DBMS for which datatypes are provided, namely DB2, Interbase[/Firebird], MSAccess, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere.
We have plans to include Sybase ASE, but no plans yet for Progress.

So what's missing ?!

Top-down UI refactoring called for !

Perhaps Sparx should only permit themselves a new major EA version number (x.zzz -> y.1) if they also do a "Paolo" on the user interface consistency each time, to remove any UI cruft.

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Is there any ABC in EA?
« on: May 01, 2007, 11:30:14 pm »
It might get your posting more interest if you spelt out what you were interested in.

I didn't know that 'ABC' stood for 'activity based costing' until I did a Google on your keywords.

I found one post in the forum when I used this term as a search term.

EA has support for estimation and resource allocation in the Project Management section ... any help ?

Hmmm, I guess an EA feature to check for name-collisions or near thereof would be of use in a large project ... but also some naming conventions imposed by the architect would also be helpful. Now that is an area that EA could also assist.

I guess EA allows you enough slack to hang yourself ...

I usually report such typos as bugs - they update the documentation occasionally.

I note that EA can't really decide whether to speak English or North American.

didn't think there was a "rant" category ...

PS on the subject of "models" saw a recent archive piece on fashion from the 1920's - referred to what we call "catwalk models" as "professional mannequins" - what a wonderful term ! So the next time you see an item on the latest tantrum of a "supermodel" just mentally substitute the old-fashioned term. Think it would do them a power of good to be renamed back to the old usage. end of digression

"Once you have created a link between two elements, there may come a time when you want to change either the source or target. Instead of deleting and re-creating the link, EA lets you change either the source or target" - Quote from EA docs.

I guess this setting lets you set some policy on this ...?

In that way the most popular ones would get fixed first.

How can you be sure that would happen ? and would it be preferable ?

I think at the moment the ones that have the "best" [Sparx] reasons to get fixed, get fixed.
