Creating a Second Keystore
« on: June 25, 2014, 05:19:15 pm »
Hi,

I would like to have a keystore for laptop users and a keystore for network users. The laptop users should have a key for 24h (they link to the network early each morning) and them be able to use it off line for the rest of the day. The network users will have the auto check-in setting enabled.

I already have a keystore that is running, but I don't know how to create a second keystore. Please assist.

Thanks,
Minna

Hi Minna,

Unfortunately It's not possible to run two Keystore Service instances from the same machine.  The second key store would either need to be a simple file-based key store (i.e. using the File | Create menu option in the Keystore Manager), or you would need to install a second instance of the Keystore Service on another machine.

Thanks! I do have some new questions now:

1. Can we create a file-based keystore when we have floating licenses?

2. Will the laptop users be able to connect to the file-based keystore to get a license to use off line? How?

2. The first keystore is created in the ssks drive. I assume then that the file-based keystore would be created in another file on a local drive (Example C:)?

Thanks!!
Minna

Yes.

To the same extent as the Keystore Service is capable of this, yes.  If you disable the Auto Checkin option for your key store, the license will remain checked-out to this user until the configured expiry is reached.  The user can continue running EA for [x] days after their last successful connection to the key store.

Basically, yes.  Using the Keystore Manager, you create a new sskeys.dat file in a directory that is accessible via a network share.

Terve Minna,

1. Yes, you can install floating licenses in a file-based keystore. The users just need write access to the file. Whether you can migrate existing licenses from a server-based keystore to a file-based one I don't know.

2. I think so. If I'm not mistaken you can specify the lease period and toggle auto-checkin-on-exit with a file-based keystore, just as you can with a server-based one -- the keystores work the same way from the administration side.

2. (sic) If I understand correctly, you're asking whether the keystore file is installed locally on the laptops. No. You place it on a network drive, and the laptop users connect, check out a non-auto-checkin license and then disconnect.

HTH,

Hi,

I found that  installing a second instance of the Keystore Service on another machine solved my problem.

Thanks for your help!

For what it's worth the help in the version of SSKeystore that we have actually recommends 2 keystores as follows:

'The difficulty is that when most people close EA they don't need their license anymore.  However laptop users having closed EA may want to use the license again at another site - with no access to the Key Store and therefore no way to request a key.

While the laptop users can put their machines into "standby" or "hibernate" modes while leaving EA running, there is the risk that the laptop will need to be rebooted etc. and once EA restarts and will complain about the lack of a license (the license having automatically been checked in).

It is therefore advisable that you create two key stores with two different settings for Auto checkin:

Target Auto checkin setting

Mobile users who want to use EA from home or other disconnected locations.    Auto checkin = OFF

Fixed users who leave their computers at work.    Auto checkin = ON'

Would have been great if it were possible to just start a 2nd server instance listening a different port.

Unfortunately, administrative overhead for a 2nd license server is not always negligible.  :'(
