Touche, Glassboy.   Although I think architects could sometimes learn from salesmen.  I see you are in NZ and so am I.  We should have a beer.

Skiwi and sunshine are also in Wellington.  There may be others too.

Ooooh!   I see Sydney and Melbourne have much to learn in inter-city rivalry!  ;D

It's probably on par.  Auckland doesn't have a city heart the same way Wellington or Melbourne does.  It's also constrained and illogically laid out from being build on an isthmus and a number of peninsulas.  Not to mention being built on a Volcanic field with something like 48 known volcano cones.  It's also sub-tropical and drizzles a lot.  Not like the rain we have down here.  As Wellington City is exposed to three coast lines (including an unimpeded line south to Antarctica) we have proper weather making us suspicious of places that don't.  Wellington also has more bars and cafes per capita than cities like New York, so Auckland can seem like a cultural waste land.

Sorry, man. I'm not going there.  I used to spend a lot of time in Wellington on business.  Nice place, but I usually froze my ass off.

I've never been to either Wellington or Auckland, so can't mediate in this domestic dispute, but I will say that the South Island around Queenstown and Wanaka is a beautiful part of the World. Sweet as, bro.
